Amazon Prime price going up... $20- $40

Read a couple articles recently, that the price is probably going up from $79 to somewhere between $100-$120. No timetable on if or when it will go into effect.

If you use AMZ alot and live in a state that doesn't collect taxes, $10 a month is not unreasonable for free 2-day shipping and their movie streaming service.

I'm finally gonna bite the bullet and jump aboard while its the current price.

I won't keep my sub if it goes up, $80 is already pretty high to pay in a lump sum for the service.

I am going to wait and see, 79 isn't bad and Amazon typically doesn't add price without adding some sort of value.

I agree - I don't order enough stuff from Amazon to justify anything over 100 dollars and I won't miss too many of the Instant Streaming options.

I think they'll have to introduce some kind of installments to pay it off. A $40 would be ridiculous, but at $20 they compete with Netflix still. Netflix is around $95. With Amazon you get streaming services, a free book per month, and free two day shipping or $2.99 ($3.99?) next day. I don't see them offering a tiered service.

This will be just like Netflix though. People will quit in disgust of a $1.67 per month increase, but be right back within a couple of months once they realize how convenient it was getting stuff in two days and not 4-7 and not having to have $35 in your cart.

This plus the tax you have to pay now(GA), would have me canceling Prime.

Same with NC...now I have to pay tax. This is going to do some damage to their business IMO

There is zero chance I ever pay amazon over $80 for prime, ever. I'm iffy about $80 every time it has come time to pay for it, no way I'm spending over $80. Increase prime and I'll drop prime, maybe get Netflix (but probably wouldn't), and shop much less at amazon. Over half of what I buy at amazon, I buy there because of prime. My current amazon account dates to 2000, I've had prime for two full years (2012, 2013). In two prime years I have 105 orders, the other 11 years combined I have 31 orders.

I use amazon a lot but I don't know if I can justify paying $100. I don't use the video service and hardly use the rent a book.

I'll probably keep it. Amazon is fantastic and I use it very often.

Or you can add family members/friends to your prime membership and split the cost. Only the primary account pays the subscription (as it is right now).

Are there rules for the family memberships? Do they have their own amounts and payment options?

                            From terms:

If you sign up for a free trial or paid Prime membership, you may invite up to four eligible household members (living at the same address) to enjoy the shipping benefits of your free trial or paid Prime membership at no extra cost (invitees). Customers who receive a Prime free trial through Amazon Student or Amazon Mom are not eligible to share their Prime benefits. (Please note that any member under age 18 may use the Amazon.com website only with involvement of a parent or guardian.) If you purchase a Prime membership as a small business, you may invite up to four co-workers to shop with this corporate account. An invitee's shipping benefits will automatically terminate if the purchaser of the membership ceases to be a member or removes the invitee.
We may terminate your Prime membership at our discretion without notice. If we do so, we will give you a prorated refund based on the number of full months remaining in your membership. However, we will not give any refund for termination related to conduct that we determine, in our discretion, violates these Terms or any applicable law, involves fraud or misuse of the Prime membership, or is harmful to our interests or another user. Our failure to insist upon or enforce your strict compliance with these Terms will not constitute a waiver of any of our rights.
                            However, there is a loophole:

If you sign up for a free trial or paid Prime membership, you mayinvite up to four eligible household members (living at the same address)to enjoy the shipping benefits of your free trial or paid Prime membership at no extra cost (invitees). Customers who receive a Prime free trial through Amazon Student or Amazon Mom are not eligible to share their Prime benefits. (Please note that any member under age 18 may use the Amazon.com website only with involvement of a parent or guardian.) An invitee's shipping benefits will automatically terminate if the purchaser of the membership ceases to be a member or removes the invitee.
Amazon doesn't distinguish between a corporate account and a personal account, so there is no way to find or enforce people that abuse the household share.

I know someone who has been using a shared account for years. They live in 2 different states. They don't go out of their way to find people doing it, just like MLB.TV doesn't seem to seek out those sharing accounts either.
