    Re: SPECTRE: Bond 24

I mean, from a historical perspective the Bond brand is iconic. It makes sense to associate an actor with the character if they have played him over the course of their career.

And let's be honest, who actually remembered what these actors did BEFORE Bond? I mean is anyone remembering Craig for Layer Cake? Or Brosnan for Taffin? Connery for Zardoz?

At those particular moment in their careers none of these actors were A-List guys, but the Bond brand thrust them into that tier. If anything this was Craig's huge break. I appreciate him being candid but for where his career was, he should be wanting to be Bond as long as possible. Just so happens, he was also a pretty damn good actor to top it off.

I'm certain he's well aware of the opportunities that have been presented to him as a result of being Bond. I'm also certain he has to turn down a lot of roles he wants to do because of doing Bond.

And some guys don't care as much for how many millions of people watch their films. Many actors like to go "art house" once they've made the money they needed to be well-off. I'm sure after Affleck does his Batman run, he'll want to do much less in front of the camera and do more films in the director's chair, maybe more of the Gone Baby Gone route. It's just more humbling for them to be able to do that kind of thing.

But again, unless these quotes were taken a bit out of context, it's just weird that he's saying it before the film's release. You know how much bad pub this can give a film if people take it wrongly.

Actually Zardoz came after Bond. Just sayin'

I actually remember Brosnan for Remington Steele and Roger Moore had a good gig in the '60s as The Saint on TV. Those are the only Bond actors who had anything resembling a solid resume and fandom before becoming 007. I think Craig, like Connery just feels restricted in the role and wants to do different things with his career. At least while being Bond he was able to do a couple other projects. I don't think the other Bond actors really had that opportunity when they were in the role. At the same time though, I think Craig is being a bit harsh after all, if he never became James Bond he'd just be another solid British actor who might have some appreciation among cinephile types.

I really hope that the Bond people continue to look for solid, under the radar (to the mainstream) actors in the future rather than someone who is extremely well known.

It reminds me of what Harrison Ford went through after A New Hope and Empire Strikes back. He wanted to leave the series and do other things(he was equally known as Indiana Jones at the time). Craig's wanting to leave reminds me of Connery. I do hope instead of an established actor they go for someone under the radar.

                Re: SPECTRE: Bond 24

It seems like a majority of the complaints that are causing this to get mixed reviews are that the movie regressed back to too much of the gimmicky one liner Bond with gadgets and such, as opposed to the gritty narrative of the Craig era.

I'm not a Bond purist by any stretch but I couldn't wait for the Brosnan era to end for that particular reason. Hope this one has a nice blend of both. Will probably go see it this weekend.

I'm with you, as long as they have a good balance than people shouldn't be complaining. I think the people behind the scenes know they effed up with Brosnan they're not likely to make that mistake again.

I actually want to see a more lighthearted Bond but with some roughness around the edges. Basically, i'd like to see something akin to Connery with some of the flavor of the early Moore films.

I thought Skyfall was a great mix of new Bond with old Bond (more new than old). I hope they can keep that balance, but I guess I'll see tonight.

Casino Royale forever, for me. I can live without any major gadgets that would come close to even Nolan's Batman, much less regular Batman.

But I'm still excited to see this movie regardless.

As long as it isn't as hokey as Die Another Day. I actually went to see that in theaters...

Just got back from it. I didn't think it was the horrendous Tomorrow Never Dies/Die Another Day "gimmicky" Bond, but it was....missing something. It didn't have the same edge the previous Craig films had. It didn't seem to have the darker undertone like Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, and Skyfall.

                            Spoiler

Overall, I'd place this a solid 3rd in the Daniel Craig films, behind Casino Royale and Skyfall. Liked it better than Quantum, but it still felt...off to me.

Not necessarily a bad thing per se. The problem with the latter Moore flicks was that he was just TOO OLD. They would've been better with a younger actor though credit must be given, Moore did most of his stunt work throughout his Bond career.
