I love the X-men more than any other comic book title as well, but I dislike the X-Men film franchise more than any other comic book film series. To me, they've never gotten it right. Since it's obvious to me that Fox is never going to give me a great X-Men movie my only hope is that they do badly enough to where they have to at least work out a deal with Marvel/Disney, similar to what Sony did with Spider Man.

Pretty much my thoughts as well.

X-men were always by far my favorite comic back in the day. I have hundreds of issues, I loved the John Byrne era.

None of these X-men films have ever got it right to me.

Ditto about reviews....keep in mind, these are writers who not only are helping their employer fill web pages, but with the hundreds of reviewers out there now, they need to try to shine above the others and sometimes that may mean not necessarily speaking to their true sentiment. Of course, I can't know that for a fact, but think about having to work in that world.

They're valuable in context, discounting them wholesale is kinda disingenuous. BvS was objectively a bad movie and most people who enjoyed it can concede that despite enjoying it themselves, X-Men Apocalypse at 47% RT w/ more than 30 reviews seems to be headed that direction.

I'll be there the first weekend, but yikes.

Hilariously, there's a change.org petition that I can't get to from work that claims Disney is paying off all the reviewers and for some reason is petitioning Rotten Tomatoes to stop them. As if reviews are why these movies are bad...

I thought the first two X-Men movies were good. X2 was fantastic and my only real gripe with it and the franchise thus far has been the criminal mistreatment of Cyclops. They definitely focused too much of the franchise on Wolverine, but that's pretty much exactly what Marvel was doing at that point anyway with him so I can't be TOO mad at it.

The Last Stand and Origins were complete crap and the lowest points of the franchise for sure, but First Class and Days of Future Past were solid. I would have rather if they were deciding to reboot the thing make the true first class be the first class, but I'm fine with how they're currently doing things. Idk, different strokes I guess?

Agreed on Wolverine, except at least I could understand that in a comic sense as at times, Wolverine has had to lead a team. Nowhere near as bad as the way they push Mystique to the forefront now just because she's played by J Law

Obviously not on a whole but you'd be surprised on what the power of suggestion can have on people with so much information being thrown out now a days. If people have heard a movie is terrible over and over they may not go in with a non objective mind set. Now they are looking for faults. This can happen on the flip side as well. Anyways I do think reviews and public perception can have a big impact on success or failure of movies.

As for me I never read reviews. I'll read the synopsis. If it sounds good I watch. If not I don't. If I hear something is really good that I may have over looked I'll give it a shot. But this strategy has always worked for me and I'm almost never disappointed. On that note I really want to see this movie.

They're 2 different things though, reviews and public perception. If something is good then word of mouth will far outweigh reviews and produce staying power at the box office over time. If it's an objectively bad movie it will fade quickly like BvS did.

Im not sure that's true necessarily, it seems a lot of good movies that have hype behind them just go unnoticed. Ex Machina came out last year, was immediately praised by critics and audiences alike, and made money but didn't really move the needle. There's great movies every year that just come out and tons of people don't notice them.

It does seem that if a movie is bad and enough people think so, that's a death sentence. I guess it depends on the number of people. Just weren't enough or the right people championing movies like Ex Machina.

I feel like the X-Men movies sure do get a lot of great actor support (Fassbender is such a talented dude, go watch that guy in Hunger, he kills it) yet I just don't walk away from these movies feeling that I witnessed many profound moments. Other than the coin scene in First Class

But think about the amount of so called critics that there are now. It's not like it was in the 90's where you maybe watched Siskel and Ebert or had you local newspaper critic. Now anybody and everybody can throw out their opinion and be seen by many people who in turn get shared by the readers and so on and so on. I tend to think that the critic and public perception are a coexisting entity now. Anyways not really trying to argue. Just something that I've observed over the last few years.

I think you're 100% correct on the death sentence part. Once something had been deemed "bad" enough times there is no turning back.
