Re: Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One (2016)
If you saw that one, I think this could/should have been surmised.
SpoilerStrangely enough, just like United 93 or something like that, as you're watching the film you still hold onto hope for a different kind of result, only for it to not really pan out.
Even still...
SpoilerI wouldn't call it a planned suicide mission. I'm sure they hoped to get out of there alive, but when it came down to it and they realized that death was inevitable, they still did what they could to succeed. If you call that a suicide mission, more power to ya I guess, but if that's not the plan from the beginning then I don't know if you could call it as such.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One (2016)
I know this will get flamed and it's in the strong minority but I was disappointed in this movie. Just saw it yesterday. The difference is I actually liked the first half+ of the movie. I liked the characters and where the story seemed to go although it bounced around a little too much. Unlike everyone else that seemed to love the final battle, it's the last battle that really disappointed me. It seems everyone loved the final scene but it was filled with so many absurd things my brain exploded. I know it's a movie and it's Star Wars but they went beyond what I felt was acceptable to the point of ridiculous writing that truly bugged me.
Let me expand my issues with the stupidity of the final battle/mission. Feel free to correct me if I misunderstood something but spare me the argument that it's a movie and I should just accept it. You may be able to but I couldn't and won't.
Spoiler
I didn't really like the idea of the final approach needing access past a shield wall that covered an entire planet. An entire planet!! Even in Return of Jedi they only had a shield for their base on the moon of Endor. This was a stretch although the bigger issue is again over using the idea of having to take down a shield or use a stolen ship/uniforms to gain access. But this didn't truly bother me like the following.
The main girl Jinn and her french partner have to sneak in to steal the Death Star plans. They gain access to the plans through their bot who accessed files much like R2-D2 did in the past. We accept this because it's Star Wars but I have to think their security is flimsier than the PS4 lol. But despite finding this file they say the file is TOO BIG to send to their ship because of the shield wall. I mean, they can talk to their ship still but this file is too large to send? Do they not have a zip file option? Are they only running at upload speeds of 1 mbs? Surely a galaxy that allows you to travel at light speed and use lasers to blow up planets wouldn't be using such a slow server? It was absurd! But this was the main reason they needed to take down the Shield surrounding the planet so they could transmit the file. Ridiculous! They should have got it, sent it and movie over. And for some reason after finding out they can't e-mail the file Jinn has to climb up a chamber to achieve a hard copy of it so she can try e-mailing it from another terminal. Not sure why Star Wars always has so much wasted space inside of ships and bases.
But it gets better. It's not enough to take down the shield wall. The wifi needed to be enabled too for some reason! And to do that a former empire pilot has to run a long, thick cable across a tarmac to his ship. He finally does that. But no! It's not enough. There is a master switch/lever that is sitting in the middle of the tarmac for some reason that has to be flipped. A brave sacrifice allows this to happen. But is that it? No! Jinn can e-mail this file to the space ship only when the Shield Wall gets taken down since it's blocking a good upload speed for some reason that doesn't block their voice communication. A Shield wall that covers an entire planet but a deadly Destroyer in space is easily foiled with an ion torpedo and crashes into the wall to destroy it after being hit by a tiny tugboat ship. So can we e-mail the file now? No! The antenna is not aligned! So then Jinn has to run to the antenna to hit a switch to align the antenna so she can send the file to the ship after her friends ran a communications cable across a tarmac and hit a magical lever in the middle of that tarmac. But the bad guy wakes up and delays this action before the inevitable actually takes place.
So much stupidity to just add time and unnecessary fluff and suspense at the end. Who writes this stuff? Did Lucas write this in the 1970s before we knew any better? So many absurd things it really bugged me. It could have been good. It's less interesting writing prequels when we already know the outcome. I know it's a movie and Star Wars but couldn't they have tried to find something at least close to believable?

Re: Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One (2016)
Not to mention it still had to adhere to technology limitations from the original films of which they never would have to consider wi-fi, upload rates, or file sizes.
Obviously some things are for dramatic effect, but it's a pretty odd stance to take on a universe that has its main villain living in a doom metal volcano castle while spitting out terrible dad jokes.

Let's face it, star wars writing has never been that strong and this is one area that my adult mind can't get over.
"Hey everyone, contact your squads personally and let them know we're going to jump to light speed and destroy an entire planet
But make sure you call everyone instead of email because our bandwidth usage is almost maxed and if we send anything more than 5MB the Empire Service Provider will get gummed up".
EDIT:
I understand your point, though. The directors had to work within the original's timeline.
Saying that, I feel they could have written in a better explanation.
Maybe the rebels have to somehow fly the hardcopy to the ship as there were no communication lines available?
Or at the very least, have Akbar mention that the Empire has blocked all communications making it impossible to send the files to the rebel base.
Anything could have been a better explanation than believing there's no such thing as wifi.
BTW, I loved how they closed the loophole of perhaps the biggest technological guffaw regarding the Death Star's weakness. At least that made a lot of sense.
P.S.S. I swear, if Ep 8 has anything do with a death star, death planet, death meteor, death dwarf moon, I'm never spending another dime on the Star Wars universe.Last edited by Money99; 01-05-2017, 02:18 PM.Comment

Re: Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One (2016)
I agree. It would have been so much simpler to simply say ALL communications had been blocked. But by allowing voice communication between the rebels below to the rebels on the space ship it made NO sense to say you couldn't submit the file because it was too big. And then they compounded it with the other communications fixes/failures they had to do. It should have been so much smarter than that.
You always have to turn a blind eye to some things in movies but I have my limits and that entire scene went way beyond it for me.Comment

Re: Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One (2016)
Here's my main issue with 'The Shield':
SpoilerAfter it gets shut and Jyn and Cassian say they're trapped, that's when they decide they need to beam the plans out. In order to do that, THEY NEED TO TAKE DOWN THE SHIELD! Umm...if you take down the shield, you're not trapped anymore and you could escape with the plans in the ship.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie, but I don't get why when the shield gate was open, escaping with the ship was the plan, but when they needed to take THE ENTIRE SHIELD DOWN, they were only planning to beam the plans out.
I don't know, just seems backwards to me.XBox Gamertag: djbeth77
