Re: The Exorcist TV Series (Fox)
So did anyone watch the pilot. I really, really liked it. On top of the good scary and disturbing stuff, it deals with the theme of faith and doubt in a manner similar to the book and film. It's well written, acted, and directed.
The second episode airs tonight, but you can catch the pilot on fox.com. I honestly did not expect much, but it really is well made. So, of course, FOX puts this out to die on Friday nights. It's worth the effort to check it, though.Last edited by JayhawkerStL; 10-04-2016, 05:52 PM.Comment

Re: The Exorcist TV Series (Fox)
I like the direction of the show. It seems to be headed in a similar direction as Outcast, but I really like this backstory a lot more.
SpoilerThe idea that the Catholic Church not only had possessed people in custody, but had them locked away in dungeons as training tools for a new army of exorcists is pretty wild. And that they were exploiting children, trying to find ones with a special gift for exorcising these demons is even more chilling.
It makes me wonder how many of the possessed they may have are children that were exposed in training.
Through two episodes, I'd say Exorcist has more scares and a creepier vibe, but but not really by all that much. I have read the the producers want to dial back the horror to some degree, as it has been shown to wear viewers down.
I know that as a fan of a lot of TV horror since AHS made it smart and cool again, that I certainly find myself pushing off episodes just because I'm not in a mindspace to deal with the assault. In fact, I bailed on the last two seasons of AHS, before picking it back up this year, because it had felt more like work to watch.
But I watch my TV horror alone, and mostly in the dark and late at night. My wife is not into it at all, which I think is better. Watching TV horror like a normal primetime show is a sure way to spend more time on its flaws than what it is doing right.
I'm just glad that AHS and The Walking Dead has ushered in an age of smart horror.Comment

Re: The Exorcist TV Series (Fox)
Enjoyed the first two episodes. Like how this is a thinking man's horror, not a lot of visual effects but more theatre of the mind. I also like how it is setup like the films, but not the exact stories told over again.
That girl creeps me out what she did to the soccer player and in the toilet! Just enough visual horror to shock you when it happens.
The music and atmosphere also line up with what the franchise stands for. Geena Davis adds tons of credibility as her acting is top notch.
Hope it stays on for a long while because they always seem to cancel shows I really get into.Comment

Re: The Exorcist TV Series (Fox)
After watching the third and fourth episode last night, **** is getting real. I think the overall tone is improving, and by the I mean it is getting creeping and dark.
And the the final scene of the 4th episode has me going crazy to see the fifth episode. The story is really starting to come together and we can see how the show is evolving the themes and tropes of the original.
Actually, I only planned on watching one episode last night. But it was so flipping intense,I had to watch one more to see what happened next. The battle is on now.Comment

Re: The Exorcist TV Series (Fox)
With the movie being my favorite horror movie of all time, I can't get myself to watch this for some reason.
I guess I'm thinking this will never hold up to the movie.
Should I give it a shot?

Re: The Exorcist TV Series (Fox)
It absolutely lives up to the name. It's hard to contrast the two in terms of which is better, because 43 years has made quite a difference in production. But this attempt gets the story right.
And this is not a remake. When the priest is doing research he runs across news reports of the original case, which is covered as investigations into the deaths of the priests. It ignores the sequels altogether.
I thought the first episode was surprisingly strong. The second one was a solid expansion of the story. The last two really took it to another level. I seriously cannot wait for Friday to see what's next.
I have some slight niggles about how I might have done of few things differently, and it is cast as a primetime TV show, not a feature film. But the acting and direction are strong, and one area I thought they were screwing up, was righted in the fourth episode.
SpoilerThe time Regan spent in the hospital was an important part of the film and book, as it shows science's inability to handle what this is. It seemed like they were going to gloss over that, but instead, when they got there, it was fantastic.
The beats of the film are all here, but the story is much, much different. But you can draw lines from scenes and plots from one to the other and see how they are carrying over the themes from the film.
And seriously, I like a good exorcism flick, although most are not good. But this may be the most clever and really the best way to present possession from the point of view of the possessed. It is creepy as heck, and it really helps explain the why.
So as someone that k nows that the sequels to the film are not really good, I say that this is most definitely worth the time to catch up on. I think FOX still has all of the episodes free to stream via their website if you are looking for it.

Re: The Exorcist TV Series (Fox)
I've read multiple books on real exorcisms too (Hostage to the Devil by Malachi Martin is the best if you can, go read it, it will scare the crap out of you) and this movie gets it right in the way it portrays the demon and how possession happens. I really like how they've done it, I won't give anything away but it's very cool how they adapted the entire thing to TV so that it is akin to reading a book and know whats going on with the person who is being possessed.
Of course with a series versus a movie it is not always non-stop scares as they build up the story and fill out the characters but when it slips into the horror mode, wow...I'm very impressed.
I just hope like hell (no pun intended LOL) that this show isn't cancelled as I've read the ratings are so-so.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20
