Re: Cord cutting
What's the difference in WiFi 5 vs 6?

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.Comment

Re: Cord cutting
I'm still researching everything. We got 3 weeks before current plan is over. I want to future proof with Wi-Fi 6. We live in a rancher and rooms are close, so I don't need crazy distance. I just want fast speeds and good for 30 devices(just to play it safe). I seen some good ones, but I want to be almost certain.
I don't want to go overboard with those hardcore gaming routers that are $300+. But I don't want to go cheap with sub $100 routers. We're doing Internet ony. So, I checked it should be a easy process. I should just have to release the DCHP lease and run a Ethernet cable from ONT to new router.Comment

Re: Cord cutting
I found some good priced Wi-Fi 6 routers that should be compatible with Fios. I just want future proof since I'm buying it. The process of switching it over should be easy since I'm doing Internet only. I just feel it's a good investment to buy one outright that performs better than the ISP models and saves money over time. My only concern is getting one that I would have to subscribe to something or with complicated settings.Comment

I would look at the apps to make sure you are getting the features you want. You are going to gain a lot more control there as the speed of provided routers are ok for a lot of homes and will match cheaper routers. Being able to control devices, timing, etc is very valuable improvement.

Re: Cord cutting
All of them are very easy to setup now and most have apps to do it. Make sure you check the speed of the router, even though it is Wifi 6 doesn't mean it will be very fast. You may not have a wifi 6 device now, but if the router speed is slower than your old router than you won't gain much.

I think I seen one I like. I just have to see if we are capable of getting the Gigabit connection for Fios. I'm not sure if we have to wait until plan is up in 3 weeks or we can change it without a early cancellation fee. Since the kids have online classes. I would want to do the whole process this upcoming week since they're off after Monday.Comment

Re: Cord cutting
I think our current speed is 100 Mbps. So most of the routers I seen are faster.

You are still limited to the internet speed coming to your house. It doesn't matter what router speed you have, it will not increase that. To take advantage of the full 1gig speed, you will need a AC1200 (I would get a AC1750) router, I think wifi 6 routers generally meet that but just check the 2.4 and 5 speeds.

Re: Cord cutting
Internet speed and router speed are different. For routers you will see AC1200, AC1750, AC3200, etc. That the total combined speed of the router across all the bands (2.4,5, etc.) The larger the number the more bandwidth inside your home the router can use. That means you can have a lot more devices with 1 device slowing everything else down.

Re: Cord cutting
I already have a long Ethernet cord and the ONT is directly below our room in the basement. So it should be a quick and easy process after I release the DCHP lease.Comment

Re: Cord cutting
We are going to stick with the router that we have now. We just called Verizon to change our service to the Internet only gigabit connection. We only had the 100/100 because the ONT we had was 17 years old lol. The router we have is capable of reaching Gigabit connections and we don't have to pay for it for 3 years. So, I'm good with the router we have now if it can reach those speeds. Maybe a couple years I'll revisit a wifi in a couple years. We saving a lot of money switching to internet only. Don't have to pay for cable and phone we rarely ever use. Don't have to pay for the TV taxes and equipment rentals. So with us not having to pay for router, I am okay with the router we have as long as it shows the benefitsComment

Kinda sad getting rid of the landline. We had that number for 27 years.Comment

Re: Cord cutting
The cable wasn't a hard one. The kids don't watch it. My GF only watches the news, lifetime/hallmark. I only watched games. Since my child became a toddler, she took over and I just cast YouTube to TV. I can still cast sports games to TV and I still have my old xfinity account thats attached to parents account, so I can stream TV and movies still
Looking forward to the Gigabit connection. The kids spend all day playing online games. So I'm looking forward to my internet being faster. I love having a new phone with Snapdragon 856 and 120hz display. So, having faster wifi will be the trifecta.Comment

Re: Cord cutting
Landline is going to be easy for us. Only the kids used it, but since they had cell phones over the last couple years, they don't use it. I only used it trying to find my cell phone lol.
