Let me clarify. I'm an uberfan of The Americans but not an apologist for season five. I just think last season suffered by comparison and I was later surprised that the slow pace had nothing to do with the setting up of the final season. They really just overthought it. Here's a short wiki excerpt

Pacing of the fifth season was slowed down intentionally, but was not meant as a set-up for the sixth season. Weisberg and Fields admitted that they did not expect "this much of a backlash" for "hitting the brakes too hard". They were upset by criticism, but suggested waiting until the series is over, hoping for the response to become more muted in context of the sixth and the final season.

I can still say that season five contained at least six of my least favorite The American episodes.

It was way more than a little off. It was probably the most disappointed I've ever been in a TV show season in my life, especially given the stature and performance of the show in seasons 1-4.

Anyway, hoping they learned their lesson. This series deserves a bad *** Season 6.

Final Seasons (mainly the series finales) make me nervous. There seems to be more misses than hits. Some shows that I really liked left a sour taste due to bad finales (just to name a few that missed - Dexter, SoA, Mad Men, and The Sopranos, although I like it now better than I did when it first ended) so I'm really anxious to see how they end this. If they have a strong final season this could be a Top 5 series for me. That's what I'm hoping for.

the tragic final handwriting was on the wall very early in the series as they pitted Jax against Clay and demonized the latter (something Ron Perlman objected to). And then you off Jax and Tara because Sutter can't stop his tragic instincts.

Without question-Absolutely. Just before season five I put The Americans at or above The Sopranos, The Wire, and Breaking Bad level. Although I don't consider season 5 the disaster that some of my OS friends do it did fall below the level of consistent greatness the first four seasons offered.

As to the opener this was a quality episode to get the season started just right.

What about that Navy jerk holding Paige's fake card to force a meeting with her? I think Elizabeth was a little annoyed.

Really good opener to set the pace, but quick shoutout to the real MVP of the episode: the music.

Starting off with Don't Dream It's Over was absolutely beautiful and fitting on more that one level, but it just going from there: Listening Winds, Gold Dust Woman and...Louisiana Saturday Night. I don't know the song that was playing at the Mexican cafe but I was digging it, especially when it started to drown out the audio. Very cool way to show that Elizabeth is feeling the burnout as well, even if she's not ready to show or admit it. Reminded me of the drone during Walter White's cancer diagnosis.

Which, yeah, the ending scene really shows that her heart's not in it anymore, especially after Paige slipped up. I think that put everything into perspective for her after she had been so close to it for so long.

I liked the music integration particularly the opening using "Don't Dream It's Over" but I wouldn't go so far as to call it the "real MVP". The music element is only as good as what it's complementing.

Not drastically, I don’t think the officer knew something was up and was honestly just flirting but if he did try to run the ID to see if it was a fake...
