Hi JTK sorry for the rather tardy reply (busy busy weekend) I realize I may be swimming upstream against the popular opinion here with my stance but I enjoy the back and forth.
The remake has been a part of Hollywood history since forever. The reason why remakes were prevalent even back in the Golden Age was due to the fact that once a movie finished its initial run in the theatres you could never see it again. That's one (and probably the main) reason why remakes happened in the first place. These days the remake is often a cynical exercise. I'm not against remakes on the face of it but when you try to remake some classics that are hard or impossible to improve upon than why do it?
The reason I sometimes feel some films aren't worth remaking is because say some kid (or someone not versed in the classic film) watches the remake and think "well this isn't very good how the heck could the original film be all that great in the first place?". The over reliance on remakes and reboots magnify the whole issue of creative bankruptcy in Hollywood. If they want to remake films AND be creative than why not remake some not so great films that had an interesting premise, update it and fix the problems in the source material?
Anyways, we're not going to convince each other to see the "light" but I hope you have an understanding of my POV.
