Re: OS Official Horror Movie Thread

I'll keep impressions short for now, but was totally caught off-guard with the approach and kind of appreciated it, though it took me a while to see what they were doing as well.

I found some items to be disjointed and not totally understanding, but I wasn't dissatisfied. I don't know if it justifies getting through Kills to get to there and say that "You gotta watch this" more so than just the original and 2018 versions, but it still kind of serves as a conclusive statement for JLC and I am for that.

It kind of reminds me of The Matrix Revolutions in its deviations from what was perhaps expected, and I like that movie as well. They made bold decisions and I think they knew what they were doing with them. I didn't feel the same in Jurassic World Dominion, for example.

Loved some of the kills, too.

Re: OS Official Horror Movie Thread

I am going to watch it again.

But I still stand by a massive missed opportunity.

There are so many ways to think of the series.

Halloween and Halloween 2 and done. John Carpenter wanted nothing to do with any sequels….but the success was so powerful of the 1978 film he ended up producing and writing Halloween 2 and he killed him off. Let’s be real. He was burnt to an absolute crisp. When Halloween 4 was released I had to suspend reality that both Michael and Loomis survived. But it was Halloween and I love this series with a passion.

      Halloween Halloween 2 Halloween 4

You can eliminate V and VI and just assume Jamie went off the deep end and was institutionalized after she tried to murder her Aunt. Halloween 4 was a great sequel with a lot of creepy moments. And that ending no one ever saw coming. It was great.

      Halloween Halloween 2018 Halloween Kills

I can live with that. I can even live with just Halloween and Halloween 2018 and assume Michael was burned to the ground in Laurie’s fortress/booby trap.

Halloween 2018 is arguably the best sequel in the series with Halloween 2

      Halloween Halloween H2O

This works. Laurie wins and decapitates Michael to finally defeat her demons. My issue is H2O has not aged well for me at all. Just way too Dawsons Creek/Scream vibe going on. And I dislike the musical score in retrospect.

I can watch any of the films save for:

Zombies Halloween 2 and now I am sure after another viewing Halloween Ends.

Resurrection is pure crap but the comedy value now with Busta Rhymes….LOL. Priceless.

Will I warm up to it over time? Maybe. I remember liking Halloween Kills but felt (and still feel) Michael Anthony Hall was a miscast as Tommy Doyle. The hospital scene was and still is the only real weak point. But after repeated viewings I have come to Love Halloween Kills as one of the best in the series as you can see in my rankings.

I just felt like Halloween Ends could have been so much more. And while it’s nice to say Green had the balls to take a big chance.....it certainly is not ringing true with most long time fans of the series.

As far as Terrifier 2. My son and I saw it this past Saturday night and it is a grandiose Grindhouse movie. Plot? You don’t go into this film looking for much of a coherent plot. You go into this to be completely shocked by the schlock LOL!!!

Just a massive insane gore fest. And yes....Art The Clown is creepy as hell!!!

I like the original much more. It definitely hit a lot of notes of the best 80’s slasher films in terms of mood, filming style, music.

This second one clocked in at 2.5 hours!! It went a tad too long. But again...if you like this kind of style of horror it is a must see.

That's the real reason many people are taking great issue with it. It's over and what was done may or may not be good but a lot of folks are now realizing that that was it. There's no do overs.

As for a lot of people not liking it, well a lot of people not liking it doesn't really mean much to me personally. And popularity, or lack of, speaks very little to the movie's quality either.

I only care if I like it….but I was pointing out how telling it is when a majority of the fanbase is not giving it good vibes. Thats all.

I love Halloween 3…..most people hate it. So yeah does not matter in the grand scheme of things.

I love Halloween 3 as well. Totally misunderstood film. I try to get people to give it a chance, but most won't even touch it.

But I totally get why so many people don't like Ends. Don't think those people will ever like it. And that's fine.

Isn't it sort of strange, if you think about it, the desire for humans that like something to want others to also like it?

I think it's rooted in a very solid reasoning though, if something is liked by yourself, and very little others, the chance of seeing more of that something, or more somethings like that something, is reduced by a large margin.

This is, at least in my view, also the biggest source of console wars, arguing over gamees, etc.

I'm human so I tend to get into that way of thinking as well, "well if they could see what I see then.." but in the end, if you think about it, if you like it and others don't, who cares really?

It's only an issue if you make it one in your head.

It’s nice we can have sane, adult conversations in the thread. We all love Horror movies (those that participate in this thread). So when we get a polarizing film every once in a while like Halloween Ends.....it makes for great discussion.

And My initial reaction to the movie was highly negative. And then.....I read your’s and PVarck’s reactions and thoughts and I go.....mmmmmmm yeah that is a good point....I never thought of it like that.

And it makes me excited to go back and watch it again with a different perspective.

When Halloween Kills came out.....I liked it. I did not love it. Now.....after repeated viewings? I love it. Brutal. Michael Meyers on steroids.

Halloween Ends may still be at my bottom even after multiple viewings but....on my second watch (gonna watch it again probably tonight) I will have a different set of eyes watching. Now.....my approach is Michael is weak, he is what 65 years old? Had the living **** beat outta him at the end of “Kills” and has been living in a sewer eating rats for 4 years.

I think that it takes a certain level of maturity, that few have, to be able to dislike something, then hear others comments on it and then re-evaluate that something and like it better, sometimes a lot better...

Really something that, in my view, determines the viability of that person being intelligent as well, not always as some people can be wise and somewhat not all that book smart, but in general that level of maturity is what determines a lot about how I view them.

And that is why I continue to come to OS and dismiss and give up on other sites, because I see that here more than any other place I've seen on the internet (thanks largely to the mods, kudos to them).

Anyways, my comment to your actual reply is that I am in the habit of doing that, re-evaluating, a lot of things i disliked when I was younger and wow, my tastes have changed a good bit, plus reading about other people's thoughts can definitely affect how I view art like movies, film, music, etc

So props to being open minded and listening to others points!!

Re: OS Official Horror Movie Thread

If you only watch one horror movie that you have not seen this Halloween it needs to be HEREDITARY.

I said it last year and I'll say it again this year and I will keep saying it until everyone has seen this movie. Hereditary is the scariest, and best produced horror film made in the last 20 years.

Every aspect of it is perfect, the script, the actors, the production, the writing, the nuances that elevate it from frightful to terrifying, the special effects and so on and so forth, just every damned thing is absolutely how it should be

Hereditary is the complete package in horror and the gold standard for which all horror movies should aspire.

I would put it right up there with The Exorcist and, in some ways, it is scarier than The Exorcist because it's completely unclear as to what the movie is about, and even as you watch it then it still morphs and changes to something else entirely.

The first part of the movie is the build up. This goes a little slow but you will notice that as it goes on you are becoming more and more uneasy with where it is going. This is the part most horror movies cannot get right. If it's too slow it's boring, too fast and the mood/effect is lessened.

There is one moment about halfway through that you will not see coming. That moment will/may scar you for life in how horrible it is. Watch at your own peril. You will know it when it happens. It's just absolutely ridiculously awful (in a good way if you're a horror movie fan LOL)

And that ending...jeesh, to say that it's memorable is the biggest understatement...

This is a movie to watch close, put your phones and ipads away and turn out the lights, pay close attention..it will freak you the heck out, let me tell you.

                              It's back!

NBC Universal has announced a Friday 13th prequel series which will air on Peacock.

Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to a "Friday the 13th" prequel currently titled "Crystal Lake," Variety has learned.

Bryan Fuller, a lifelong fan, will direct and be the show runner, with Victor Miller himself being an executive producer.

In the article it updates to say they will in fact be able to use elements of the original sequels. It was reported earlier that they wouldn't be able to. But this leads me to believe that Miller and Cunningham have reached a deal. Like I said before, money talks.

I can't overstate how excited I am for this.

I'm going to temper my excitement strictly because of the failed series that never was (after supposedly being green-lighted). If there is no deal between Miller and Cunningham and they can't use adult Jason it's going to have to be REALLY good to have staying power.

The "too good to be true" side of me says there is no deal and that the elements that can be used from F13 sequels are simply things that are direct descendants of Miller's intellectual property (ie the name Pamela instead of just Mrs. Voorhees).

I hope there is a deal and I'll watch either way if this ever sees the light of day.
