Major Nelson puts this to rest

    http://www.majornelson.com/2005/05/1...ur-xbox-games/

Ok, let’s stop this right now. There is some serious wrong information floating around, so I need to clear this up. I grabbed my favorite PR dudes, and they are saying what I was telling a few of you in email:

“We’re not sure where this came from, and is incorrect. At launch, Xbox 360 will be backward compatible with the top Xbox games. Our goal is to have every Xbox game work on Xbox 360. You will NOT need to purchase a new ‘version’ — your original games will work on Xbox 360.”

If anybody is wondering who Major Nelson is, well he's the Xbox Live Program Director

It's nice to have, and I can understand why many see it as a must. For me, since owning the PS2, I've never played a PS1 game.

      To each his own.

I've gotten rid of my XBox and Gamecube and its games. Say I had kept the games, hoping for backwards compatibility (which manufacturers have proven is possible, and for some, a priority).

Why would you want to spend that extra 50 for an old Xbox, plus sacrifice the space on your rack/inputs, deal with a different controller/accessories, etc?

Even If I didn't keep the games, why not just buy the games 3 for 20 and put them in your new system, instead of buying a another console, another controller?

That's why I think nintendo's revolution has a really good idea. It's hard to even find an NES/SNES now, and even if you can, its a hassle(dealing with ebay, etc.). Who knows how hard it might be to find a functioning Xbox in a few years? Hard drives fail, etc.

Sounds like Nintendo has a new employee

Exactly. I don't even own a single PS1 game. I used to own quite a few but quite frankly couldn't stand to play them with the old graphics. I'm buying a next gen machine to play next gen games. I'll still have my XBOX IF I want to continue to play XBOX games.

I wasn't complaining, it's just a feature I would like to see included. I don't remember anyone saying "if it isn't backward compatible, I won't buy it, dammit!".

Second, the point was already made against why someone would not necessarily want to hold on to all their own consoles. Again, say if someone gets the urge to play Halo 1. Instead of just popping the game into the 360, they have to haul the Xbox out of the closet, get behind the TV and reciever, hook up all the cables, etc. Keeping every system you ever might want to revisit hooked up continuously is impractical.

If you dont care about it, good for you, but don't shoot down what other people would like to see, as if your preferences are somehow superior to theirs.
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

Then why the complaining.. that's the point, it wont stop you from buying it so why make a big deal out of it?

Simple. Dont put it in the back of your closet, dont sell it, dont give it away, and Halo is right there. What you call impractical is really a personal problem.

noone is shooting anything down, but this feature #1 was lied about and #2 isnt that important.

Why would it only be the top games and not all of them?

What do they mean top games for that matter? Some games have great reviews but never sold well (Deathrow,Beyond Good & Evil) while others sold lots and have had horrible reviews. (Wrestlemania 21,Star Wars Episode 3)

Reason is because of a few games that might not exactly play on the XBOX 360. The bad thing is that I'm really not going to put any of those games in my 360 if I buy one but rather that I'll be putting them into my XBOX. Plus, those games are what the consumer made good sellers and not. Lot of other issues too that hold them back from that BC, but will that truly kill the gaming experience? I think not. Halo 2 or Halo 3?? I know which I'll pick....

Re: XBOX 360 is NOT backwards compatible its official!

there's a simple solution to this if it in fact is true. Don't trade in your old Xbox one and or games. Basically, it goes like this, gaming is a hobby made more or less serious by the individual user. If you fall into that boat where you cannot live without a few games from your xbox 1 days, then realize this NOW and don't trade in anything at the 360 lauch date. It's as simple as that.
If you fall into the catagory of "but i can't afford to have both platforms and games at the same time" then it's time to reavaluate things a bit in your life and either find a higher form of income, manipulate your income resources better, or just suck it up and choose the lesser of two evils.

Either way, i don't see this as huge news, but of course everyone has an opinion and there's no right or wrong one.

You guys want to hear something crazy?

Right now, I have a NES, Sega Master System, Atari 2600/7800, Neo-Geo, SNES, Genesis, Turbografx16, Playstation, N64, MAME, Intellivision, and Amiga all hooked up to my TV concurrently. How? Modded Xbox

Between all those emulators, plus all the Xbox games I have backed up, theres never going to be a reason for me to get rid of my Xbox. Even when I have both 360 and PS3, Ill still keep this sucker around for old games, and maybe media streaming into my bedroom or bathroom or something.

Man, that's one hell of a setup you got there.

Intellivision and Atari 2600 brings up some great memories.
