PS3 to sell for $399, cost $494 to make

    Interesting article...

Merrill Lynch Japan predicts Sony will lose more than $1 billion on hardware during its next-gen console's first year on the market--a sum it may not be able to recoup.

    Thanks for the link.

Yeah sony your going to play around and end up in the number 2 slot this gen i mean just think about it

    360
    Released 3-9 months earlier
    Gfx will be comparable/equal/better
    100$ cheaper
seems to have the features that i will end up using free and up and running from day one i have no use for 2 hdmi gigabit Enet or 1080p and all those damn card slots
    HD INCLUDED

Choice is simple i was really looking forward to the ps3 and i even thought about waiting but i think ill get one when the price drops down to about 249-299

if true, then i'll be waiting for the first price drop before i pick up the PS3. I'll stick with the xbox 360.

it's like the first xbox...people bagged on it a bit because they were selling hardware for a loss, but MS was trying to get into the market...i would have thought Sony would have been able to cut the losses here but i guess not

Wow, that's expensive. If you get a game and anything else your easily pushing $500. Hard to justify that.

This loss is about market penetration but as much for Blu-Ray as for the PS3 itself.

$400 for the system, $60 for a game (I assume), and $20-30 for a memory card.. That is almost $500, which is a bit much I think..

Granted, it's a new technology and will likely be a very impressive, but 400 bones is a lot, unless it already comes with everything required to play and enjoy a game, which I doubt.

The article was pure speculation. Going by this generation's consoles, Sony and Microsoft tried to stay pretty close as far as price went. (If one dropped it's price the other followed suit) I'd be pretty surprised if the PS3 wasn't the same price at launch as the Xbox 360.

With tax it would be well over $500.

Are there any comparisons of the two systems online?

I had assumed I was going to get a PS3, but if the pricing on the PS2 is even close to accurate, I may have to re-consider my options.

I think Sony has doomed itself by TOO much greed. They're using their powerful Playstation brand as their biggest chip in a poker game of standards. I just don't think Blu-Ray is going to be what the rest of the world goes with. Hell people just recently have given up their VCR's for DVD's. It's too soon. And because of their want to corner the market the PS3 will go down with the ship. It's too bad, they should just focus on making a good gaming machine that's accessible to the masses. But historically in consoles you can only be king for a few generations at the most. I think the 360 is about to come to power...until someone knocks them off.

I doubt that this will stick. Nobody is willing to pay 400+ for a console unless it comes with the works(2 controllers, memory card, game) and that right there is highly unlikely. And it will also be without a HD? That right there is rediculous. Sony has always been the company who has a habit of working money out of you one way or another but this is wayyy to far. First of all, they are gonna be late coming out and have a higher price, that spells doom.

"Our ideal [for the PS3] is for consumers to think to themselves, 'OK, I'll work more hours and buy it.' We want people to feel that they want it, no matter what."

Hell is he talking about. That right there shows how freaking clueless they are. I should'nt have to work more hours to afford a console. That absurd. What about the kids and HSers, what extra hours will they work to afford a PS3?

When Nintendo was selling its 16-bit machine at around 12,500 yen ($114), we sold the first PlayStation at 39,800 yen ($364)," continued Kutaragi. "The press was saying that it was expensive, but it was a huge hit. It's the same thing with the PlayStation Portable from last year. The Game Boy Advance is a same handheld gaming machine, and it costs less than 10 thousand yen ($91). On the other hand, our PSP had cost 25,000 yen ($229). But people lined up overnight to buy it, and it sold out on the day of its launch. It all depends on whether people want it. Of course, I'm confident that the PS3 is a product that people will definitely want."

Dude can go F*&^ himself. Seriously. That means just as Jistic said, they're going off the Sony Playstation name. Sadly, I can see the PS3 selling out on day one with a 400 buck price tag. There are enough ppl who would gladly spend more if they had to.

                              From the article:

However, Merrill Lynch Japan warns that the normal console business cycle may be disrupted if Microsoft cuts the Xbox 360's price when the PlayStation 3 launches.
This is a good point, and really could hurt the PS3 before it's even out of the water. If the 360 price drops when the PS3 is released, it will be hard for potential PS3'ers to not consider spending $150 less (assuming a $50 price drop) on a system that may be prove to be better, or at least as good as, the new PS3.

Microsoft is in a nice spot right now, and Sony could realistically lose quite a few customers to Microsoft and it's 360.
