Blu-Ray needs the PS3 more than the PS3 needs Blu-Ray.

Anyone remember Voom? They 1st tried to market their satellite service on HD alone. Didnt work out too well until they began working on regualr standard def channels also.. because well, the majority of people werent ready for a dominant HD market YET.

I dont think this blue ray thing is the ideal way to make a staple of their system. At the moment other aspects are more important to the majority, and honestly, HDTV's arent in enough households yet to warrant running on this.

well you may be getting "better" hardware thats worth $500 for $400, but thats only until Sony decides to do what they did with the first PS. Remember when they took out all the silicon and metal parts, replaced them with plastic parts and cut the price from $300 to $150.

Sony constantly craps on the loyal first time out of the gate customers, and caters to the later comers. There is no reason the PS2 should be coming with a network card and whatever else it comes with now, when I paid $300 dollars for when it first came out.

IF not for us $300 payers outta the gate, PSOne would've failed quickly and PS2 would've never even been thought of. I think I'm rollin' with Microsoft this time.

Re: PS3 to sell for $399, cost $494 to make

It is this simple - I said it almost a year ago, and people are finally seeing it.
I'm not saying I'm a visionary - far from it - it's just that I've been around the block enough times to understand how Sony and the electronics industry as a whole works.

Sony's only consistently profitable division for the last few years has been the PlayStation's. Otherwise, despite the occassional "Spider-Man 2" in the theatres, the company's bleeding cash.

Any wise company would seek to leverage their successes into other avenues and potential revenue streams, and that's what Sony is doing. Look at the articles that are coming out almost daily. Sony has created a new DVD platform. If it catches on, then Sony stands to profit off of every new DVD created for the next decade. Sony and IBM (another company that's fallen on stunningly hard times) have co-created the Cell processor, which they tried to sell to Apple and failed - now they're pushing it for medical devices and anything else they can imagine, and I don't blame them.

The PS3 is, simply put - a testbed for Blu-Ray and the Cell processor; a way to get these devices in people's homes in an effort to jump-start new lines of business for Sony (and to a lesser extent, IBM). The PlayStation's popularity and install base makes such a strategy eminently practical.

But it is what it is, and we shouldn't be surprised.

                  (1) Average age of gamer = 29

                  (2) HDTV is about to experience an EXPLOSION in American homes, studies predict. Prices are about to drop like a mob rat tied to a block of concrete in the East River. In 3 years, over 80% of households will have an HDTV, most conservative estimates predict.

What sways me towards 360, however, is the fact that it is coming out way earlier and will be $100 cheaper. $50 of that is made up in Live costs (if PS3 doesn't also charge for online), but it's all good. I was PS2-only in this generation, but I might jump now.

                        Don:

Realize that you're getting a MUCH, MUCH better online component by paying $50 for XBL than you are for using PS2 Online for free. It's not like one console is charging you $50 for online play while the other is offering the same service for free.

MS has a huge lead over Sony in online games, online interface, online performance, etc., etc.

Yes, we are getting $500 worth of hardware for $400 but its hardware that's there for Sony's purposes not for ours. In the past we have gotten gaming hardware for less than manufacturing cost. Now we get "other" hardware and features that could be added for gaming are taken out to cut cost. This gen, especially the PS3, is bad for us gamers in this regard relative to the last one.

true many ppl only bought a PS2 for a DVD player, and it turned out to suck(the DVD player). As I posted earlier I've been loyal to sony since 95-96 when PSX came out, and yet they never seem to deliver on alot of their promises especially on the PS2.
