In rpg's I prefer turn based because they usually involve more strategy. With action rpg's they usually end up as button mashers=boring.

Casual roleplaying fans are usually looking for games with lots of cutscenes and good graphics. If that's what he's looking for, then he should try Xenosaga, FFX, Star Ocean, etc.

I suggested Shadow Hearts because it was similar to other PS2 RPGs, but added a little kick to the gameplay. I played Shadow Hearts Covenant without playing Shadow Hearts and I was fine. Japanese RPGs usually don't make much sense storywise anyway.
Did you play Xenosaga? How can you say that's something for casual rpg gamers?

Actually, I'll retract Xenosaga. Now, that I think about it, it did have some nice twists to the gameplay. I'm just biased against it because I got annoyed with the long cutscenes and I quit after six hours or so. I watch a lot of movies so the story of a game with lots of non-interactive cutscenes has to be as good as a four-star movie for me to be interested.

That and it's my girlfriend's favorite game. She cried while playing Metal Arms: Glitch in the System because it was too frustrating, but...she probably likes it because she likes anime...not because it was easy.

True. If you're not much into anime then I can see how Xenosaga won't be up your alley. A Star Wars fan might possibly like it though. Personally I think it has a great story which makes all the hours fighting worth it to progress that part along; something I don't get in a lot of rpg's now-a-days. Most rpg's feel like fighting, fighting, fighting without a purpose. Oh and it also contains a hot fembot so big plus there.
