Finally beat the game. Man that was a blast playing this game. I am going to go through it again, but this time I will play it with my brother.

Re: Resident Evil 5 announced for Xbox 360 & PS3

Finished it on Normal. 12 hours and 48 minutes. I wanted a little more story. What was there was great, but I would have liked to see somethings given more time and explored much further than they were. Easily the best Files of the series yet. Last fight was everything I hoped it would be, but the ending was kind of ho-hum. I'm very interested in were the series will go from here story wise.

I didn't mind to much that the gameplay turned into more Resident Evil of War at times, because it was still very enjoyable. Chapter 5 was probably my favorite. I particularly liked 5-1' melding of classic RE with new. Pacing and variety was really good throughout (just like RE4). While epic in scope, the boss battles overall were a mixed bag. Definitely not as creative as RE4, which has some the best boss battles of any game ever. I know it's supposed to make you feel more immersed and intensify things, but I'm not really a fan of the realtime inventory system - I found it more of a nuisance than anything.

RE5 has some of best graphics and real time cutscenes seen yet. I think a good comparison would be Gears 2, which it trumps handily, in modeling, lighting, and shadowing. What's with with the almost lack of gore during the game over screens. I used to die on purpose at times in RE4 just so I could see the amazing gore.

I would probably rank RE5 behind RE4, RE2, and RECV. I feel designing the game around co-op did take a bit away from the solo experience, but it's still one of the more enjoyable games I've played this generation. And there's tons of incentives to keep playing for awhile with new game+, co-op, mercenaries, and unlockables.

Me and my friend made it to somewhere in chapter 2 yesterday.

I'm a bit angry that he lucked into the Be The Arrow achievment.

Also, do the turret sequences not count for the achievment for killing 30 enemies?

I'm on level 5-3 with that rotating platform which goes down and then you get it going up. What do I do once the platform is up and still rotating?

I haven't finished the game yet, but I find your thoughts mostly echo mine. I don't mind the more action approach, but I do find myself longing for some exploration like what occurred in the fist few games. The episodic nature and linear nature of the game bothers me a bit, and little things irk me. Like how some obstacles you can hop right over, but similar ones with a treasure chest or something on the other side you can't because the game wants you to do something else to get it. Or at one point in chapter 3 when you're underground you come into a passage where you can clearly see a trap on the floor, but the game doesn't let you jump over or go around it. The game really forces you to play it one way, which isn't so bad, but the narrative doesn't make up for it (or in my case, has yet to). I also hate how Wesker looks like a blond Keanu Reeves from the Matrix (and moves like him too in that cut scene). FYI, that's not a spoiler for those of you haven't played the game, as my opinion is based on flashback they show of Wesker in Chapter 2 (I believe, or early Chapter 3).

This game is basically RE4 with less exploration, less horror, more action, and a partner. RE4 had a great interface so I don't mind Capcom copying it here for RE5, but I hope for something different for the eventual sequel. The controls worked well enough for RE4, but in this game with the close quarters and loads of enemies, the sluggish nature in which characters move can be a real pain.

I know I'm being highly critical, but I do like the game. I just think it could have been better given the long wait between 4 and 5. I don't know where I would rank it amongst the back catalog. I have a fondness for the first Resident Evil, and especially the Gamecube remake. RE2 was the one I spent the most time with and beat the snot out of, while Code Veronica featured the best storyline and RE4 the best gameplay. My rankings go RE4, CV, and then the rest just kind of blend together, with RE3 and 0 being my least favorites.

This game is a great rental IMO. The graphics are sick as hell, and it is fun so far. I beat the first Chapter then my friends all got on me to play COD.

Anyway, I started wondering...could the next COD in November have graphics as sick as RE? I mean these graphics are ridiculous!

Well i'm only so far as chapter 1-2 right now and i've gotten used to the clunky, outdated control scheme. I'm enjoying the game and so far I feel the 8.5 Gamespot gave it is about right for the experience. It's clear that Dead Space has set the new benchmark for survival horror in it's atmosphere, and this game doesn't even come close as far as putting a good scare into you. While much is made of this game becoming an action title, it's obviously still rooted in survival horror and tries to get you to jump.............but fails miserably. The one part very early in the game when you're about to encounter Alpha team that came out worse for wear after a meeting the first boss and the camera kind of pans ahead and a scream is heard to let you know something's happening up ahead.....just totally ineffective as an atmospheric tool. Dead Space has you jumping out of your seat on numerous occasions, not to mention that it has a FAR better control scheme and it's much less linear.

This game is really fun, but Dead Space is the new king of Survival Horror/Action in every aspect.

I am still on the fence about getting this game, but I was thinking the same thing about Dead Space. I have the game, and it scares the ish out of me. Still haven't finished it

I may buy it, strictly because of the nostalgia elements. (I loved the first RE on PS1)

Well if you liked Resident Evil 4 you'll like this one as well. This game (as well as RE4) doesn't really resemble the older RE games much that were revolutionary for their time. I remember long nights in college playing RE on the original Playstation when those games were first coming out.

The 1st RE was so scary. The camera angle is what always got me. I still remember almost jumping out of my house when that damn dog came through the window.
