360 vs PS3

Here is the problem. I have been reading the threads like crazy but i dont understand what certain specs are and what they do. In simple terms and expinations, can ppl post what we know so far about both the 360 and ps3?
I think this will help all that aren't too familiar with computers

Not going into numbers, but both systems are fairly similar spec wise. Even with the PS3 coming out later, it's not more powerful overall. In certain areas it is, but in others, the Xbox 360 is. The 2 biggest factors for me is the Xbox has a 20 gig HDD and Xbox Live. That's huge to me.

The PS3 will be online, and will be in HD, also has HDMI outputs. It's biggest point is the fact it's Blue Ray disc. But will not at this point have a HDD.

also, Hi-Def (HD) does that just mean better graphics pretty much?

Blue Ray Disc is their new media format.
Instead of a DVD that holds anywhere from 4gig to 9gig, the blue ray discs can hold up to as much as 50 gig compressed.

Hi-Def is for TVs that support High Def signals. High Def signals have better clarity on the picture and better colors. It won't be like "OMG, that's so much better" it's just kind of like icing on the cake. It makes words and letter appear clearer (easier to read) and TVs that are widescreen will get support.

Something else to note about the PS3. Sony has gone on record saying that you will NOT be able to save game files on their HD. The HD will be used for MMORPGs and Music Files. I think it's a mistake not letting game saves on that HD.

As stated above, both systems can do certain things better than the other... there's no clear cut winner. The ps3 has a bit more horsepower, but it's shared over a lot of different areas and not just a few as the 360 is doing.

From everything I've read, it seems to be a wash hardware wise.

Basically, it all comes down to which system has the better games, really.

Agree, which is why I will wait for PS3. I basically only play Sports games and with PS3 having more option for sports games I will get that. No MVP Baseball for 360 means only MLB 2K for now and I like what SCEA has done with MLB. On a side note, whats with all this stuff they are adding, all I want is a system that plays the game and also lets me play the game online. I could care less about music, messaging, and all this other stuff. Thats what a computer is for. I hope they offer the PS3 for less without all that other stuff. I doubt it though.

I am not sure which one to buy either.

At the Software, Etc. next to my work in the mall, they have a huge display for the 360. Two different "editions" basically that will be on sale. The first is $299 with the standard controller, and no HDD (among other things). The other one is $399 with an HD drive and wireless controller, DVD remote, etc.

What if you just wanted the HDD and remote but none of that other stuff? Would buy those two separately be cheaper than upgrading? Is it even possible to get "attachments" on the 360?

HDD on 360 can download game files?

If someone finds a side-by-side article on specs (with some sort of definition as to which is better in different areas) and what you can do with each, I would love that.

Finally, I bought a 52" HDTV 16:9 aspect ratio. How can I best utilize its features? I am putting my X-Box out there and leaving my PS2 in my room (I update my Madden rosters and need my computer next to my console/TV). What can the X-Box handle on an HD in widescreen?

As it stands right now, it sounds like the credit card is going to take a $300-$400 hit this November and my student financial aid is going to help out in the spring

the difference won't be greater than the curent generation systems (ps2 and xbox). I am gettin 360 for a couple reasons (most likely I will buy ps3 also)

1. Its a home media center. Stream video, music and pictures from your pc to your TV.

2. XBOX LIVE. Sony just doesn't seem to think online gaming is as important as Microsoft.

The PS3 has better hardware, but Sony needs to ship more dev kits so the PS3 won't have such a sorry launch.

IMO Nintendo is going to come back on top though. This is going to be great. That is the best controller scheme ever.

If they both came out at the same time I would probably get the PS3, but since I am impatient, I will probably get the 360 in January, unless the wife suprises me at Xmas. I think both consoles are pretty much equal, power wise, but the PS3 will have a larger variety of games, more 3rd party support and Blueray, while the 360 has the better controller, IMO.

I don't think that because the PS3 comes out later it will be signifacantly more powerful, the big hold up is blueray. If the PS3 had a regular DVD drive, it would probably be coming out this year, but since Blueray is so costly and not standardized, they are waiting till prices come down and to see if any compromise is reached in the HD-DVD/Bluray battle. If the PS3 were to come out now it would probably cost over $1,000. If it comes out 6 months after the 360 it will still be very expensive, probably over $500. If I ever get in the market for a blueray player, I will definitely get a PS3.
