      1UP Hands-On

Good to go: The intense sensory experience the game's new engine affords makes it easy to get completely caught up in the moment of battle. The high degree of environmental detail even extends to the outfitting of everyone's uniforms. From ammo belts to supply pouches, every detail has been carefully recreated. Spectacular weather effects heighten the mood even further. Rivulets of water run down walls in the rain and lightning flashes break up the gloomy darkness in a storm.

Good to go: So far, Hell's Highway feels good as a shooter in its own right. President and CEO of developer Gearbox software Randy Pitchford explains that theoretically the entire game could be played through "run-n-gun" without worrying too much about using your squad mates. While that sounds a bit far fetched given the tactical situations we found ourselves in during our playtime, it was considerably more satisfying to look down the iron sights of our rifle, squeeze off a few rounds, and have our squad mates take out enemy soldiers as expected. This bodes well for the sections of the single-player game where you go it solo.

Good to go: From playing these two brief areas, the most exciting impression we came away with was how the game felt less like a puzzle and more like a dynamic battle than ever before. Where prior levels seemed designed around figuring out the right solution in order to advance, here the action flowed more naturally. In both the urban streets and the more open fields, the German squads moved freely, taking up support positions for one another, and energetically bringing the fight to us.

Warm afterglow: Hell's Highway has been a long time coming, but this is one of those cases where it shows in a good way. Nowhere does that come across more strongly than the improved feel of the shooter side of the game. Using your team to suppress, maneuver, out flank, and defeat enemy positions has always been satisfying, being able to top it off with a perfectly sighted head shot, or few bursts at an exposed enemy takes it to a whole new level. With the shelves full of "ordinary" shooters, the prospect of an equally engrossing one, that keeps us constantly thinking on our feet to run the show has us pretty excited.

Destroying Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway

Anyone who has played either of the first two Brothers in Arms games knows cover is essential to survival. Both for you and your boys as well as the enemy. Guys that crouch down behind sand bags or wood fences used to be safe from incoming fire. Not so in Hell's Highway. Now firing on those surfaces will yield visual and tactical results. Wood realistically splinters away, not in bulk, but instead each plank on the fence will rupture and break as bullets shred through them. Toss in an explosive and watch the sandbags or fence get wiped clean from the face of the earth.

In Hell's Highway you're no longer limited to suppressing and flanking your enemy. Instead, you'll be able to tell five machine gunners to target the piece of cover and, should it be of the proper material, they'll tear that sucker down. Volume of fire now plays a roll into BiA's gameplay, thus bringing the battlefield even closer to reality.

Adding the deformable surfaces did create certain hurdles for the developers at Gearbox Software. It forced AI programmers to create code so enemy and friendly soldiers alike will know when their cover has been torn down and to move to a fresh piece. Then there's the physics engine which needed to be re-worked to allow for the massive amount of particles that a splintering wooden fence creates while still keeping the rest of the on-screen action fluid and realistic. What began as a 12-piece checkerboard used as a proof-of-concept in place of a wooden fence as a mockup for what was possible within Hell's Highway is now nearing completion.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway marches onto Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on August 26.

Seeing that walk through makes me want this game even more. Brothers in Arms is the best WWII series ever IMO, from the squard based combat to the real maps it just can't be beat.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Has anybody played the previous titles they had before? After downloading and watching the trailers on XBL, I'm now considering getting this game. But I want to make sure the game is worth it before dropping $60 on it?

It's definantly worth $60. I own both the previous titles and they were amazing, especially Road to Hill 30.

They have been far and away my favorite WWII shooters. That being said you can always rent first if you are not sure you want to drop 60 bones on it.
