Just picked up Matrix: Path of Neo

I headed over to Target because I'd decided to get Call of Duty: Big Red One, and somehow convinced myself to get both of them.

Thing is, the Target Rep that helped me saw that I was hesitant about the Matrix, and told me that their return policy is 90 days even if the game's open. That was surprising to me - I normally won't buy a game unless it's getting great reviews because you can't return to Gamestop or EB once opened - but since Target will take it back I figured I'd give the Matrix game a shot. Still, I'm a bit skeptical - has anyone had Target give them any problems on an opened-game return?

In any case, I'll try to get some time in with the game either tonight or tomorrow to see how it is.

I didn't even know that it came out yet.

It ships on Monday according to Atari. But EA released a ship day the day before NCAA, and we know how that turned out..LOL I'm sure it's in stores, Target just put it out early.

Yeah, I didn't know it was out either. I walked into Target to get COD, and there it was. Still haven't played it - I'm pretty entrenched with the NBA double-header, but maybe later tonight.

Why you gotta tease us like that for real? I mean, just pop it in and switch between timeouts and stuff for us. I'm eager to check it out too. I like what it sounds like too but I'm curious to know how nice it'll play. Graphics look AMAZING in some of those screenshots and I think they're PS2. So many flipping games and not enough money in my pocket....not to mention that my girlfriend is coming up for Thanksgiving AND Christmas.

Re: Just picked up Matrix: Path of Neo

            Quick first impressions:

            1) Graphics are by no means mind-blowing. I'd give them about a 7 out of 10. Way ahead of the graphics from the "Enter the Matrix" videogame, though.
            2) The fighting engine is the most complicated part of this game, as well as the best part about it. If your dream for a Matrix game was being able to control all those bullet-time moves, well, this is a big-step towards that.
            3) After the first-level, you basically seem to enter a hugely extensive training-zone (after a good hour of play, I'm still doing it). But I'm not complaining - when I say training-zone I mean you're basically placed in lots of different situations similar to when Neo goes up against Morpheus in the first movie. This is by no means a bad thing - learning the combat engine takes a ton of practice, and I will say that every time you learn a new move it's really satisfying.

Anyway, definitely could write more and I've only played an hour, so these are very undeveloped impressions.

Right now I'd give the game a 7/10, but keep in mind that I haven't really even begun to figure out what this game is exactly about. I could definitely see this game being boosted up to an 8 or 8.5 in my book if the combat engine turns out to be all it looks like it could be.

If you're a big Matrix fan, you should pick this one up. If not, then it definitely could be worth a pick up if you're looking for a combat game with tons of moves and a steep learning curve to learn them, but that's very satisfying when you do (many of the animations when you perform a big combo are excellent).

I'm looking forward to this game, though I don't like that they have a different ending for the game. In any case, I liked the screenshots and the trailer I saw earlier, so I hope it's good.

Atari has issued a street date of November the 8 here in Toronto, Canada. Anyone caught selling the game before this is breaking the street date and may get fined.

                    XBOX version.

I will mention that the first level of the game is where you have to try and get Mr. Anderson out of the office as the agents search for him (makes sense in that that's how the movie start too, of course). It's a stealth level, and to be honest, it's pretty silly. I was a little skeptical at that point, but it's a short level and afterwards the fun begins.

This is by no means the "perfect" Matrix game, but it's also way better than "Enter the Matrix." I'm hoping to get a little bit more gaming in soon. Feel free to ask any other questions.

Honestly, I know a lot of kats didn't like the Enter The Matrix game but I found it pretty nice. I think it's because it was cool how they incorporated that game within the movie and all. I do think I might just pick this one up on the real on the XBOX after a few prices drop. The 8th is an incredibly long time to get that joint though.

Not sure, unfortunately I'm not an HDTV guy.

Anyway, got to play quite a few more hours tonight. I'm by no means done with the game - in fact, I sincerely doubt that I'm even a third of the way through it. That said, my final thoughts for now on the game are that Atari really implemented some great ideas and the game does show it at times - there definitely have been (and, I expect, will continue to be) moments where I pulled off a bullet-time combo against four-guys and just stared at the screen with my mouth open saying "wow, that was awesome" - which does say alot, as there really are few games that make you do that.

But unfortunately the graphics are just mediocre, and while I'm not a graphics-whore, the game suffers from inconsistency in the quality of gameplay, mediocre AI, and a camera that at times can get a bit irritating. All in all, I'd reiterate that if you're a huge Matrix fan, you should pick this up. If you're not a huge Matrix fan, but liked the movies and like action games (that's me), this wouldn't be a bad pickup either - after about 5 hours playing, I'm still looking forward to playing it more. I'd give it about a 7.8 out of 10 at this point, and I'd imagine that IGN and other review sites will do likewise - although I wouldn't be shocked if it got in the low 8's either.

Still happy to answer any questions.

What other kinds of levels are there? Are they all movie-related?

Because I'm pretty much a diehard Matrix fan, so yeah.

They are not all movie-related. So far I have gotten up to the rooftop fight where Neo first dodges bullets, so, assuming that this game follows all three movies, I guess I can't be more than a third of the way in (which is a good sign, because I've already gotten about 6 hours of play out of the game).

In any case, all the key action scenes have been in there ("I know Kung-Fu," the Lobby scene, etc.). But there have also been quite a few other levels that weren't in the movie - mainly for training purposes, I would think. All of them seem to be sequences that could have happened in the context of the movies, we just didn't see them.

If you're a diehard Matrix fan, I imagine you'll really enjoy this game.
