    Possible tech in the PS3

Originally posted by ikachii at IGN

Details regarding the patent are featured here: http://www.ipdl.ncipi.go.jp/homepg.ipdl

It is indicated specifically that the technology is to prevent the use of used as well as pirated software

The technology involves actually rendering a authentication code originally encrypted on the game disk unreadable to other machines once the disk it is used

This would mean that Net-based and other such games will not be the only ones to be affected by the technology

Naturally third software developers would embrace this technology, and it would ensure sales of the inevitable "Best series" for the PS3, but used games shops would be put out of business if the PS3 were to become the primary platform in the next generation

While information regarding the patent does not specify outright that the technology will be used in the PS3, Kutaragi has gone on record saying that copy management is absolutely necessary in order to endure that no "Napsters" of the game industry create problems in the future "
Personally I hope this doesn't make it into the PS3. It's a horrible design choice. Basically any game I buy could no longer be used on any other PS3. I couldn't sell it, I couldn't lend it to a friend, and I couldn't rent games anymore. Something like this could hurt the PS3 more than help it. Doubt it'll be there, although I wouldn't put it past Sony. I eventually see this happening to many forms of media though.

    Thoughts?

It's probably an anti-pirating measure but you're right it would kill any kind of selling of games or even just lending out games. It goes TOO far IMO. If it's the only way to stop pirating tho I guess they may have to do it.

Yah, I can see the upside of it too though. Piracy is rediculous. Sucks for me, since I buy sports games each year and usually trade in last years version for the new one. Oh well, I bet this tech will hit movies, CD's, and games eventually. It's bound to happen.

This wont happen for two reasons. It would kill the sales of the PS3 because who wants to buy games for a system and be forced to keep them forever. Also, just like every anti-pirating measure, the hackers will find a way around it.

I'm sorry, but Sony would be shooting itself in the foot with this one. Rental stores would be hurt tremendously, and I'd say that consumers wouldn't purchase a PS3 knowing that they can't rent games... if they buy a game, they're stuck with it.

It really doesn't make sense, and I hope Sony doesn't go that route.

Maybe they will create special discs for rental places? Oh well, this is a dumb move, but I doubt it will happen with this cycle of systems. I guarantee down the road this will be a reality however. Technology is going to become more and more expensive and will self-implode. It will happen someday...

Maybe Sony will also come up with something to distribute to game stores and retailers that can "remake" the disc, so that it can be sold and used by someone else.... they better or this will boooomb.

I don't have a problem with it if they do go that route as I buy my games and keep the anyway but this would kill rental stores. Also may hurt the sales of PS3. I don't think they'll do it. As for cd's and dvd's I think this is going to happen for those just a matter of time.

Also what happens if your PS3 breaks and you've already bought 15 games? Do the games just turn into coasters?

This is assuming the buyers are told of this before they purchase the system. I know one manager at a store that is a pure Sony fanboy and in no circumstances would he inform any buyer of it if he thought it would keep them from buying it.

M$ is laughing right now at Sony.

No unified online service. No renting of games. No trade ins. if your PS3 breaks, you are SOL. Who knows when this thing launches....

M$ is loving every minute of this

I can't believe this is real. This would cripple the PS3 when word got out. You think the higher up's at the game stores like Gamestop would push the PS3 when they can't sell used games? Stores, like companies, make nothing off a launch, it's more a nuisance to them. They make money of the games being sold, especially used. So if a used game can't be sold for the PS3, they aren't going to be pushing it.

this is stupid lol, can't even bring ya games to a friends house and vice versa. I understand for anti piracy measures but c mon... re-selling games to places like gamestop is a great thing.
