Re: Possible tech in the PS3

Greedy software developers. Maybe if their business model were better they could act like any other industry producing consumer product. Do used cars kill the car industry, does selling used furniture kill furniture producers, does the selling of used books kill printers? No, it doesn't, because it's within the fair use rights of the consumer once they purchase a product. Don't think this is just about piracy, which isn't as big a problem as they would have you think anyway, but rather it's about Sony and the software companies not getting a cut of the resale of used games.

If this is really true (which is not yet proven) then it's all the more reason to drop money on a 360 instead of waiting for a PS3. Anyone remember DIVX?

And wasn't Sony one of the main reasons DIVX failed miserably? Sony wouldn't make players or any Columbia stuff on that platform. It was a joke, and I still hate Circuit City for it! I can't see Sony pulling this now.

I agree with just about everything you said, except for the thing about piracy. It's incredibly easy to go online and download any Xbox game straight to your hard drive. A monkey could install the chip that will allow you to do it and the cost of it more than makes up what you'll save on pirated software. I have a roommate who has probably 50 Xbox games, none of which he payed for. Same with the PSP (if you have a big memory stick, seems harder to pirate with that system though). Piracy is a problem, especially now that these systems are equiped with hard drives. Hopefully it doesn't take something as drastic as this proposal by Sony to curb it. If they do go through with this and I actually purchase a PS3, I'll be sure to save every receipt for every game I purchase so if that system breaks on me and it isn't my fault I can make Sony pay me back for the useless software I now own.

If the games were $20 or less ...maybe, a BIG maybe, but I'm not paying full retail for a game that I cannot use as I please. I think this technology is more aimed at movies than games anyhow, the MPAA and Sony are fanatics about this stuff.

You wouldn't be able to rent games. I think it is a very bad idea.

Yeah rentals was the first thing I thought of.

This is stupid, you can't lend out your games? I mean, piracy was BAD in PS1, it got less common in PS2, it'll be even harder in PS3. They don't have to do this.

None of my friends have any PS2 pirated games as a matter of fact. PS1, hell yeah, but PS2 nah.

Sony has lost their damn mind! or this must be entirely fake.

A 599$ system that you have to buy games for, only buy,no renting, going solely on reviews, not able to trade them in if you don't like them and they think this is gonna work? People CAN'T be that gulible and I doubt Sony is that stupid. This would just kill sports sales too. Who would buy them if you can't get rid of them and they come out yearly? It would just plain sink EA and give the rest minimal hope. Really the only way this will work is if like someone else said the games are 20$

I wouldn't put it past Kutargi. The dude is pompous and an idiot, and if he thinks it would work, or if he actually helped devloped it, I wouldn't be surprised if it did happen.

On second thought I'm wrong.
It works with PC. Can't rent those and there's no trade ins I know of,at least not here. At least they have demos though.

I swap PC games with people all the time.

I meant like taking them into Blockbuster and trading them in. Can't do that here.

I think I have seen Gamestops or EB Games that do this. Maybe not...
