Same here. $500 sounds like the price to me. 400 would be great but with all these analysts claiming that they know for sure that they know PS3's official hardware and know that it'll be approx. $900 to make, 400 isn't likely.

I read a while back that Sony took out one of the cores (or whatever) to lower the manufacturing cost.

These analysts have been wrong before, so I wouldn't take their word as absolute fact.

What Sony isn't bragging about is how much money the new player is likely to lose for a while. Keith Diefendorff, senior analyst at Micro Design Resources Inc., says Sony's Emotion Engine processor and its accompanying graphics chip are costly. He expects Sony to spend well above $100 to make each chip, mainly because their size is about four times the current standard. He says Sony will be hard pressed to deliver a machine costing $400, while Dreamcast is expected to retail at $199.

Phil Harrison, a vice president at Sony, says his company expects to deliver a cost-effective machine next year. Meanwhile, Sony engineer Hidetoka Magoshi, had this comment at a recent conference: "We don't care how much it costs."
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - After months of speculation by the gaming community, Sony Corp. is expected to unveil its next generation PlayStation system Tuesday. However it will be at least a year until the system is available in the United States.
The PlayStation 2 will be powered by a microprocessor faster than those found in the most advanced PCs and will be capable of providing motion-picture quality images, according to the Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Simbun.
Scheduled to go on sale in Japan by March 2000, the console will use DVDs to store data. This will result in a storage capacity nearly eight times that of the CD-ROMs currently used by PlayStation machines.
Nihon said the PlayStation 2's price will be kept below 100,000 yen, which still works out to as high as a hefty $839 in the United States.

I can find more. There was some crazy speculation going on with the PS2.

I don't think many people can grasp this; The only real news is Sony's stock drop, thats the only fact, the analyst are speculating on the launch info and price. So basically we did a 360 and are pretty much where were before these reports.

With Sony announcing that the PS3’s online support will be similar to Microsoft’s, it is only natural for the Japanese electronics giant to approach Korea’s online gaming industry for help. South Korea boasts one of the strongest online gaming communities globally. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and KIPA (a Korean government agency that promotes IT) co-organized a business proposal PS3 event for developers in Korea.

The meeting didn’t go as planned and ended in a heated Q&A. Korean developers were upset and offended. Kotaku reader Torokun kindly provided us with a translation of the main issues:

1). KIPA and SCEJ will provide the entire development cost for an online PS3 title. The project will be funded up to the Alpha version. Moreover, the PS3 tool kit and support will be provided. There’s also an option for the team to become a first party developer. The game will be published under SCE in Japan. A worldwide release will follow. Korean developers were pleased with these terms. (The remaining ones pissed ‘em off.)

2). Even if the prototype of the game is finished, the quality or marketability could be deemed “low” (a subjective term not clarified by either Sony or KIPA), the entire development cost would need to be paid to KIPA.

3). Since the game is slated for the PS3, the entire rights including the source code would be owned by Sony — regardless of whether the title is published or not.

4). If the game is successful and a sequel is made, Sony will own all rights to the title.

5). When the game is released, all initial profit will go to the SCEJ to cover the development cost. After that is paid off, Sony and the development team would divide the remaining profit. However, at what percentage the development team starts to receive profit cannot presently be revealed.

What a raw deal for KIPA! SCEJ = Suge Knight.

If anyone here really believes that the PS3 is coming out in the spring here then you're really kidding yourself. Sony is just doing the only thing they can really do, string people along in hopes they won't break down and buy an Xbox360. It's just human nature that if you think "well it's coming out in a few months" then you will just wait but if you think "wow, nearly a whole more year of waiting? to heck with this, i'm getting a 360!"

And lest anyone accuse me of being an Xbox guy, I fully plan to buy a Sony PS3 the day it's available, which will probably be November or December. Too bad they aren't allowing any preorders at EBgames or Gamestop, which is another big indicator it won't be out here in the States for quite a while.

I really don't see the advantage for them to make a game for the ps3 if all that is true.

So much for God of War 2 possibly being a launch title, it's not even in developement. I'm sure there will be a sequal though.

BIZ: So will Kratos or a game in the GoW franchise make a PS3 appearance?

DJ: Right now because the game has been out for a year but we're still selling really well at full price, my understanding is that Sony is looking at the franchise and assessing if this is something we want to continue. I think we as a development team have a lot to do with Kratos in terms of we have more stories to tell and more adventures to send players on, but I think right now we're just sitting back and kind of seeing what the market is telling us in terms of, "do they want another title?" and if they do, "what do they want in that title?" If the answers end up being yes then I think it's safe to say that we'd probably go there, but right now we don't know yet.

I don't think these guys are pissed off. I think the guy in the dark suit in the front here with his head down, passed wind. Look at the faces of the guys behind him.
