Good to have you here at OS - though I figured you'd be hard at work pimpin' that new SXRD tech instead of the big Panny gas-blaster... nor did I figure you for a Cavs fan.

I think a PS3 priced at $800 would still sell. Especially because it will play Blue-Ray DVD's.

There will always be people that want to get their hands on it right when it's released.

Heck a 360 with another controller and a few games is almost already $800.

LOL. Fair enough. I'm going to buy an SXRD myself... plasmas get sketchy at high-altitude...

            Panasonic HDTV Interview
IGN speaks with VP Jeff Cove about all things HDTV. From the 103" plasma monster, to 1080p support, to Panasonic's vision of the future, it's all here.

IGN: How much have you followed the trends, say, from the conversion from analog to digital TVs, and then going HDTV. Is there a big up-rise of people buying these sets that will continue to grow as analog sets decrease?

Jeff Cove: HD is exploding. What is interesting is that there are two big drivers to this huge growth of HD. One is that there is more content available, and secondly, flat-panel. Flat-panel is doing a lot to help HD grow. We are expecting that by the end of 2006, a quarter of all homes will have at least an HD-Ready set. That's a big change, and should give you a good idea of how much HD is getting sold.

IGN: That's fantastic. Do you have any projections for farther out, say 2007 or 2008?

Jeff Cove: I think that by the end of 2008 about half of the homes are going to have HD-ready sets. So the growth rate is really just phenomenal. I'm not exactly sure where the cross-over point is where more HD is going to be sold than non-HD, but it certainly is coming in the next couple of years.

IGN: You can certainly see that happening. At most major retailers all you see it HD, and you have to go into the back to find any of the old stuff.

Jeff Cove: One of the studies that we did here…These sets aren't cheap. A couple thousand dollars isn't pocket change. However, this whole idea of HD and flat-panel is revolutionary. The last time there was a revolution like this in the TV business was the switch from black-and-white to color. I mean, it's been a long time. So, the first big year for color television was 1965, and the point is, in those days, color TVs cost between five hundred and seven hundred dollars. Households were investing a lot of money in 1965 dollars. If you convert that to today's money, you're well over two-thousand dollars. It's the same kind of price point and explosion that is happening in this switch to HD.

I agree with him. And I cannot wait for this 65" inch Plasma from Panasonic. It's the HDTV I've been holding out for. So excited! I think this was a great interview, I recommend reading it.
There's no numbers there. That entire thing is speculation. There was a lot of "I think" and "We are expecting" in that article.

Have fun paying 15K for your TV.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Yeah, it will sell to the hardcore gamer, but to the casual gamer blu-ray means nothing. All they know is that the system will be better than their last and that it is about $300 overpriced.

I bet you the Blue-Ray won't even be used in it's first year.

There are ZERO out right now, and many haven't been announced. I still don't see the big fuss over blu-ray.

Well in your scenario a PS3 with a couple of games and another controller would be well over $1000. That is assinine.

People said the PSP would be $500...it's $250 and helped Sony's last quarter quite a bit.

The PS3 will not cost more than $450, it's laughable to think otherwise. They aren't going to forfeit many sales in their biggest division to save a few early $$$.

I'm a blue-ray supporter because I like new, expensive consoles to improve and have something to fall back on...xbox360 is the only console I remember that decreased avalible storage space(by making games run without the hardrive). Some new techniques can surface and in an instant the DVD-9's could be squashed.

He means he doesn't care what else it does, just so it plays games. Like the useless HD-DVD add on for the 360, I could care-less about that and think it's a horrible idea. I buy a gaming console for gaming.

Exactly. I don't want to pay Sony an extra $100 or $200 for something I'll never use.
