Re: IGN says PS3 might break you
What "copy protection folks"?Originally posted by JohnnytheSkinI know that Sony says that the native resolution of the set is 1080p. My post was merely referencing the stand alone players that will retail for both Blu Ray and HD DVD. They will only output true HD resolution (not the downscaled 980x540) through HDMI and DVI. I will be VERY interested to see if Sony somehow convinces the copy protection folks to output Blu Ray movies over component...if not, they will really face a backlash. Just think of the outcry if you buy the system, wanting high definition movies, and yet are not allowed to view them over your standard component connection (which I assume will be included in the box, much like the 360 premium came with component cables).
It's Sony's decision - they're the "copy protection" folks!
From Mini-Disc to ATRAC to the spyware issue a few months back, Sony's always been militant about locking down all their content.
I don't begrudge them that one iota (Well, save the spyware fiasco, of course), but it's their decision.
You're right, however - if it's HDMI or the highway, a lot of early HDTV adopters are going to be awfully upset that they're early PS3 adopters...Shawn Drotar

Re: IGN says PS3 might break you
I'd be willing to bet that the PS3 comes packaged with HDMI cables, as that will be the de facto connection for it. The console will have two HDMI outputs, and Blu-ray playback will likely [italics]require[/italics] HDMI for true HD output. When the original Playstation came out, I knew quite a few people whose TV's didn't even have composite connections, but did Sony include an RF coax adaptor in the box? Nope. I am guessing it will be packaged with an HDMI cable, a set of composite (not component) cables, and a Cat-5 Ethernet cord.Originally posted by JohnnytheSkinI know that Sony says that the native resolution of the set is 1080p. No chance. Their upconversion DVD players don't come with HDMI cables, and that's the main output for those. It'll come with component cables.Originally posted by SportsorDeathI'd be willing to bet that the PS3 comes packaged with HDMI cables, as that will be the de facto connection for it. Re: IGN says PS3 might break you
I have a great deal of interest in the PS3 - I just have realistic expectations of it. It'll be a very impressive piece of hardware, without question, but I have my doubts that it'll be a significantly more impressive gaming device than the Xbox 360.Originally posted by FootballForeverGreat Post Shawn as always, I will most def give the PS3 a look, While I'm very, very happy with my 360. I also really have no interest with the PS3 at all. I will follow up your last line about how you summed up the PS3, I'll do that same for the 360 how I se it.
The 360 is all about Muliti Media/Online gaming, not DVD's. To all at Microsoft the 360 a High-Def/Power gaming console that play games has a great online service and happens to play DVD's, I also Think MS staked there company on it too.
Doesn't mean that I don't want one...
Microsoft hasn't really staked their company on the Xbox 360, however - that's where the comparison gets interesting.
Sony has relied on the PlayStation division to get the company in the black - much like retailers in December - for years.
Microsoft, on the other hand, took a bath on the poorly-executed Xbox 360 release, and still turned nearly a billion-dollar profit last quarter.
The fact is that Microsoft won't catch Sony in the console gaming world anytime soon. It just won't - in fact, I doubt they'll even come close. But unlike Sony, they're not working without a net.
Sony's trying to create that net... with Blu-Ray. That's why the PS3 release is all-important for them.Shawn Drotar

Re: IGN says PS3 might break you
True. I did, too. But what destroyed the Dreamcast, other than horrible Sega marketing, was the absence of a certain company's games from the DC lineup.Originally posted by RockyGood post, but I would take out Dreamcast. I loved the games for that console.
That company? Oh, yeah: Electronic Arts.
So again, it's about the games, DAMN IT!
Take care,

Re: IGN says PS3 might break you
Wishful thinking. HDMI cables cost about $40 a pop. We don't know much about what the PS3 will come with in the box and what it will and will not allow us to do.Originally posted by SportsorDeathI'd be willing to bet that the PS3 comes packaged with HDMI cables, as that will be the de facto connection for it. Re: IGN says PS3 might break you
There is always a draught of games right after a launch. The same thing happened with the PS2 and PSP as well.Originally posted by APOCYeah, so do the people who bought 360's. I'm sure they didn't buy it to look at it.Comment

Re: IGN says PS3 might break you
Yep, it's great, ain't it. It will be useful to those of us who will have a TV that can take advantage of 1080p and HDMI, only with the newer HDTVs coming out soon that will support it of course. But that shouldn't be a problem because this is new technology, and people like to buy new technology. C'mon, it's pretty self-explanatory.Originally posted by fishepaWell that's terrific. That will be useful how?Comment

Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: IGN says PS3 might break you
If you own a 360, I'd be more worried about when your gonna see games for that, not about games for the PS3, especially when it doesn't even have a release date yet.Originally posted by fishepaThere is always a draught of games right after a launch. Obviously, the launch list of games for the PS3 is weak right now, but that is expected because it more than likely won't launch until late fall anyway. The PS3 probably will launch in Japan in spring, then make it's way over to us. That list will change after E3 when more games are announced and we actually get to see what the games will be like. Although, the MGS4 trailer convinced me what this system can do right off the bat, not to mention what it will do once Blu-Ray is fully realized.Comment
