This is one of those console exclusives that really got me excited about the 360. Gaming companies are starting to refine their ability to mix epic stories with gameplay. The last generation was picking up a lot of steam with titles like God of War and Jad Empire, but I think the new gen will really solidify the idea of using a strong stoy for a game.

                Re: Bioshock (PC/360)

Looks like the original link with the info on the game doesn't work, so here is the info on Bioshock.
                • The game is set in the 1950/60's.
                • Core gameplay centered on player choice and customization
                • Devs main goal is total immersion in the story
                • You wake up in the ocean surrounded by debris and your first goal is survival
                • Something about creatures in the ocean discovered by scientists
                • "We're creating a world for you to be in. What you do is up to you, and you have to live with your choices."
                • Most upgrades will affect weapons
                • You can create weapons and items
                • A walkthrough is useless - you take the game where you want it to go (Sounds really open ended)
                • Bioshock holds many mysteries

Bioshock is set in an underwater city called Rapture. Rapture was a utopia founded by the worlds elite; scientist, athletes, artists and politicians. However the discovery of a sea slug called "ADAM" allowing people to change their bodies and DNA to turn themselves into super human freaks, led to a break down in Rapture's soceity and the destruction and break down of the city.

When you visit the last remaining "people" have become human freaks changed and adapted to the under sea enviroment, in the now flooded city, where survival is determined by collecting more ADAM. The game sees you trying to uncover the mysteries behind the city and ADAM. You even get to use ADAM to alter your character and make him more powerful, in an RPG element of the game.

Combining a spine-chilling setting, sci-fi themes, RPG elements and a deep storyline with first-person action, Bioshock resembles System Shock 2 in several ways, and although Bioshock does not take place in the System Shock universe, it can be thought of as a spiritual successor to the series.

The game is set to release in early 2007 for PC and 360. A PS3 version is possible too, but not yet confirmed.

It's a popular gaming forum. I rarely post there. I just lurk for new info.

Lots of fanboys from all sides (a lot more so for Sony and Nintendo), some insiders, developers, famous developers like CliffyB, David Jaffe, and a few others post there from time to time.

If it comes anywhere close to System Shock 1 or 2 i'm sold. Two of my all time favorite and classic games. In fact when I heard the name Bioshock, the first thing that poped into mind was System Shock.

BioShock didn't get much attention at E3 (mainly because it was behind closed doors), but everybody's impressions are glowing.

                          Impressions...

After what has seemed like eons, we finally got a chance to see the spiritual successor to System Shock 2 in action. Fans of that game won't want to miss this.

The graphics are pristine, spiced up with dramatic lighting/shadow effects and a water modeling engine that is as comprehensive as to support dynamically buoyant figures. The storyline reeks of innovation, a clever mix of conspiracy and steam-punk antics and the gameplay is as frightening as System Shock 2 -- even more so considering the greater degree of interactivity you are allowed to enjoy with events in the game.

Water and lighting effects were as good as any next-gen tech demo, and the highly stylized art deco city was a welcome change from the usual mix of warehouses, urban street corners, and space stations. It's easily a leading contender for Best of Show.

Ok, this seriously looks to be one of the most artistic western game to come along in quite a while. The way Irrational has painstakingly put together Rapture, a city underwater made in the 60's with Art Deco styles is just insane. The environment detail is also quite exquisite for lack of a better word, there's so much life in a place of death. And of course, the enemy's are total homages to the System Shock 2 enemies, though maybe a little more creepier, especially the splicers, but also the "big daddy" and the "little sister" (the thing in the underwater suit and the little girl that consumes people's "Adam").

The water effects are definately the best I've ever seen, the amount of refractions and reflections plus light blending is simply surreal. It all comes together to create one of the most beatiful environments (in its own way) that I've ever seen.

We would love to post Bioshock footage as well, but no one was allowed to tape the presentation. I even personally spoke to 2K about getting direct feed of the entire E3 demo because I was so impressed by it, but they weren't having it, even after begging them.

This was one of my favorite games of the show.

It sounds ambitious and I hope the developers succede in creating the game they want to create. I find it hard to get excited for it after the hype that was Fable. Creating a true open-ended game has proven quite difficult so it is one of those things that I'll have to believe it when I see it. IGN has it listed as a first-person RPG, not my kind of game, but if it delivers on what its trying to do I'll at least give it a look. I am glad to see that developers haven't given up on trying to create that true open-ended game.
