It may not affect YOUR purchasing decision but this 'cutting off at the knees' tactic by Microsoft will have a negative effect on the mindshare of gamers who haven't yet gone next-gen and those who currently own just an XBox.

Confidence is whaning too with developers who are still releasing current gen games. Codemasters is coming out with a new game for current gen that will be released to everything but the XBox. That can hurt a lot of gamers confidence when they decide to go next-gen.

I don't understand why people on here always think that gaming companies owe them something.

Look, Microsoft is in the gaming business to make money. The only gamers they care about right now are ones with shiny new 360's in their living rooms. It may not be "right", but business is business. Microsoft has no moral obligation to keep gamers happy who didn't buy a 360.

So, you're saying companies don't owe customers anything???

We'll see how this all pans out. The opinion is that there is still much life in current gen gaming to not have to kill your console support. Just keep glazing over the points brought out and using the 'you should have bought a 360' line.

well, if you don't like what Microsoft does then don't support their products...its that simple.

I don't see why you guys are getting all bent out of shape because of Microsoft is making this move. It is a business move....they are trying to force you to buy a 360....If you don't like...then go buy a PS2.

We're not bent out of shape...We're just talking about it. It seems you are getting "bent out of shape" (but not much) seeing us talking about it. Why not just lend to the discussion with agreeing or disagreeing points rather than mildly scolding us for talking about the affairs of xbox gaming? That's what these boards are for.

And just b/c it's a business move, does that mean we can't talk about it? Time will tell if their business move is a good or bad one. But for one MS customer (me), their business move has failed - in business terms.

            ps. I've taken you're advice and I am getting a PS2.

I understand that, but there are plenty of Xbox games coming down the pipe. Sony did no different with the PS2 games, only games they ported back to the PS1 were sports games. MS does not have a sports division, but Madden, NCAA, etc are all going to be Xbox1 games this year, probably next as well. So I don't get where the lack of total support is. If it's first party, well, then blame Sony as well. I didn't see Gran Turismo 3 or SOCOM come out on PS1 in dumbed down versions.

And on the arguement of "Abondonment" as noted by the topic, you want to drive your new product and use most of your resources to do so from a business perspective. Unfortunately something has to take a hit in the process.
I don't know for sure, but I don't think its possible to download a game to the PS2 hard drive and the play it off of that. With the Xbox, people were able to illegally download games and store them to the HD (either the factory one or a replacement). I don't know how big of a problem it truely was, but it obviously didn't help.

That's not a factor. Hackers have broken the protection on current gen and next gen consoles. The 360 is already cracked.

It was actually easier on the PS2 than the Xbox, but that's not neither here or there.

I don't know how extensive their support of the PS1 was, but they did release two versions of their first party title Twisted Metal in the summer of 2001. Twisted Metal Black was for the PS2 and a seperate game titled Twisted Metal Small Brawl was released for the PSOne, which was well after the release of the Playstation 2. I don't know how common this practice was, just something that stuck in my mind (mostly because I'm a big Twisted Metal fan).

Yeah, I'll give you that, I forgot they even did that. But that game was NOTHING like Black, it was destroyed in reviews. But again, you are correct, the support was there. I can't think of anything else, but if there was, I can be wrong.

It's a freakin' joke that someone will wait 5 years to buy a console, ignore the fact that there is a 5 year library of games to play for the system, and then complain, "Where are all the new games?"

Look, if you just got around to getting an Xbox now, after the new console is released, you need to realiize you're mostly going to be buying games that were released over the last 5 years and there isn't going to be much of a future for the console. You'd think there were NO new games coming out for the Xbox. I was actually surprised to see how many more games are being released. What the hell is the expectation here? You buy a 5 year old console when it's next generation is already out and think you're going to be getting another 2-3 years of *new* games?! Gimme a break. You waited, the benefit is you got one cheap, there are TONS of cheap games for you to buy and catch up on. If you want NEW games, buy the NEW console.

All I am saying is that people shouldn't get upset that MS has morally failed their customers because that isn't their responsiblity as a company. Their responsiblity is to make as much money as possible.

I feel you. I guess gamers sometimes have one agenda and companies sometimes have another. I personally don't think it's an issue of morals though, but I can see how some would.
