Re: PS3 Too Cheap -- Kutaragi

Sony just priced themselves out of my money. I had a hard time justifying spending almost a grand on my HDTV...which i use all the time.

There is no way I'd drop that much money on a PS3 when i won't be able to use it enough to justify the price tag.

Also, my (and 95% of other people) HDTV doesn't support 1080p so I wouldn't get the full effect of the PS3. At a starting price of $600 I want EVERYTHING.

Re: PS3 Too Cheap -- Kutaragi

I think the complaints about the PS3 price are some-what justified but at the same time they make me scratch my head.

Leading up to E3, the price was speculated to be anywhere fro, 400 to a grand for this thing and everybody had an opinion. So for it to be priced at 500 and 600 shouldn't be all that surprising (though having two SKU's is a bit surprising).

And a lot of people have stated they don't care about Blu-Ray, they want just a game machine, etc and yet the very same people complain about the 500 dollar model having no HDMI port. If you don't care about Blu-Ray, you shouldn't care about HDMI. And spending 500 when the 360 is 400 doesn't seem like a huge deal to me. When the costs of games and accessories (and warranties, if you choose to take that route) are going to bring the cost up another 150-200 bucks the 100 dollar price different doesn't seem like a huge deal to me. If that is, you want to play the PS3 exclusives. If you couldn't care less about the PS3's exclusives they why bother with it? Stick with your 360.

That's why it should be a big deal. I could afford a PS3. I won't buy one on principal. Sony is trying to justify people spending a large sum of money on something that most people don't want in a gaming machine or can't even use.

When the cost of a console is already going to cost me 600 bucks, another hundred isn't going to break the bank on me. That's just personal opinion. And if the PS3's online service is free like they claim, its really only an added 50 bucks.

why should someone have to pay for a blue-ray palyer that is useless and doesn't work ??? Youre paying some serious $$$ for the PS3 because it has a blue-ray player, I would expect it to actually work but it won't.

No, it will still work on your TV, but you won't be able to display Blu-Ray movies in 1080p. I thought Playstations on-line component sucked. This is what I've been told by avid Playstation gamers. On-line isn't really that big of a deal for me. Games are where it's at for this generation of gaming. I can play Oblivion, Saints Row, Grand Theft Auto IV, Gears of War, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Crackdown, Viva Pinata, Forza 2, ALan Wake, etc. Not to mention the fact that I'll most likely pay less for the 360 and Wii combined, so you can add Nintendo's catalog from NES to current generation console as well. Sony has not impressed me one bit and I used to be a huge Playstation fan.

I think that the Sony hardcore people will probably buy the PS3 at launch. The problem for Sony is going to be convincing the casuals who are more price sensitive to buy it and unless they lower the price the sales could be much less than they would like. Most people who buy video games do care about the price especially now since the cost of more important things like healthcare and energy are rising much more rapidlly than inflation.

Supposedly they have a network set-up like Xbox Live. For me, I personally don't care about online components too much either, but pretty much every poster here who has a 360 has a 50 dollar subscription to Xbox Live.

I have no intentions of buying a PS3 either. All of the games I'm interested in aren't going to be available until next year anyways so I have no use for it at launch. I also have other expenses I plan on taking on in the next year that will discourage from buying either the 360 or PS3. I may crack for a Wii, I don't know. I just think some people are overreacting to the price and just trying to find excuses to dog the system. The PS3 is going to be a nice console, I don't doubt that, and its going to have some worthwhile exclusive content and its going to cost you a little more than the Xbox 360 (how much more depends on what model you want). All of those things don't take anything away from the 360 though, it's a good console as well.

Misfit, the $500 machine wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't missing the memory card reader and WiFi. I can care less for the HDMI since I don't have a 1080p TV and I'd be content with a 20gb HDD, but I have 2 TV's with HDMI that I think the picture might look a bit better over component when hooked up to HDMI.

Here's the kicker, when MS released the "Core" and "Premium", they didn't change anything to the physical console by taking out features. The HDD is optional if you want to say that this is something that could be a feature. The difference between the "Core" and "Premium" is the accessories that you receive.

Sony is telling us by the time they are done with the PS3, we might see a different version each year like the Ipod or the PC market. When I mentioned something like this many SONY followers jumped down my throat, but this is the road that it appears they are going down.

It's not a gaming machine anymore, it's a "Multimedia Machine" first and then gaming.

I couldn't have said it better. This is my, and most peoples point. Peter Moore even said it. These are gaming machines. Most people already have PCs in their homes these days. That's why I'm also excited for the Wii. Nintendo gets it.

I bet the PS3 sells out on 11/17 or a few days after pending on how many Sony releases. If their still systems sitting on shelves 2 weeks later than there could be an issue.

I believe you on the phone calls because yes there are people out there that are very excited for the PS3 and I don't blame them one bit.

After seeing all the coverage and videos from E3 2006 I'm very happy that I purchased the XBox 360 last year. 360's graphics are better, the games are better, its prettier, free demos and trailors, xbox live. Sony cannot compete.

I'm assuming you are referring to the $499 PS3 for this said adapter.

Assuming a HDMI adapter would come out, it would not fix the potential problem of downgrading the signal because without HDMI you will have to convert digital to analog and back with the adapter. The copy protection prevents this in the first place by downgrading the signal.

And for what it's worth, I'm sure this converter would cost close to $100 or more so you might as well just buy the $600 PS3.
