Re: PS3 Too Cheap -- Kutaragi
Originally posted by FootballForeverSee HDMI is tricky to me, I have one HDMI port on my TV, I have my cable box hooked up to it, I had the component cables hooked up for about a month when I bought my HDTV, then I say heck let me buy an HDMI cable and get the best out of my tv, so I spent $65 on a monster HDMI cable for to hook up my cable box to HDMI. I don't care what anyone say's, I saw a zero difference, I mean it, I could hook back up my component cabels and not even tell. So in my opinion, I think HDMI is a bit overrated, and this is no shot a t sony. I'm just giving my opinion.
Since I only have 1 HDMI and 1 DVI on my TV, I wound up using an HDMI to HDMI cable for my DVD player and HDMI to DVI for my cablebox.Comment

Anyway, I found this tidbit about the differences in the PS3 versions.
A quote from Sony's President, Kaz Hirai:
The only difference is HDMI - and at this point, I don't think many people's TV's have that. The ultimate result, to my eyes anyway, is there's not a discernable difference between what you get between HDMI and other forms of high definition.Comment

As far as Kaz's comments, he's kinda shot himself in the foot as I'm pretty sure you would need HDMI to pass a 1080p signal. I guess he's saying 1080p is not that important even though Sony has been hyping it since day one. As far as I'm concerned 720p/1080i is more than good enough, I would take 720p and 60fps over 1080p at 30fps.Comment

It looked better on my set. Not a lot better and not worth the $75 that I paid for the cable. However, I have it so I might as well use it.Comment

I can care less for the HDMI since I don't have a 1080p TV and I'd be content with a 20gb HDD, but I have 2 TV's with HDMI that I think the picture might look a bit better over component when hooked up to HDMI.
Originally posted by burnwoodI'm assuming you are referring to the $499 PS3 for this said adapter.
Assuming a HDMI adapter would come out, it would not fix the potential problem of downgrading the signal because without HDMI you will have to convert digital to analog and back with the adapter. The copy protection prevents this in the first place by downgrading the signal.
And for what it's worth, I'm sure this converter would cost close to $100 or more so you might as well just buy the $600 PS3.Comment

I'd prefer it be included in the $500 model as well but since the competition doesn't have it I feel I can't use it as a knock on the console, merely a wasted opportunity.
I'm aware any sort of adapter would downgrade the signal and the viewer would not experience 1080p. I'm just assuming an adapter can be made so that people who have the cheaper PS3 can bypass the lock-out on Blu-Ray films that require an HDMI port. I don't know if an adapter will be made, but I wouldn't be surprised to see one within a year, especially if there is a high demand for one. Some people don't care about Blu-Ray films right now because who knows if they will be a success, but down the road people who have the cheaper model PS3 may decide they do want to view Blu-Ray without fear of some titles not working on their hardware.
Well the adapter will not bypass the content lockout since the signal would have to be converted to analog and then back to digital. As soon as a locked down AACS stream hits analog it will be downsampled.
An HDMI to DVI or component adapter will only be made for convienence sake since it will not circumvent copy protection. That is, unless someone starts selling devices that crack AACS.Comment

Memory cards could be a big problem because what if us roster creators create a set of rosters and want to transfer over to the PS3, how is someone going to do that on a $500 model without the memory unit especially if the USB Jump drive their using won't allow it do to the software or OS running on the system? Why should we continue to spend money on Datel or Gameshark type products when the system that's trying to be like a PC should allow this, correct?
True, Wifi isn't standard on the 360. It would have been nice for the $500 model, but what are you going to do. Again, my house is hardwired downstairs with CAT5 jacks so I don't mind that. This kind of defeats the purpose of connecting your PSP to the system if you want to play a game like Ridge Racer 7 that will use the PSP as a rearview mirror. You will have to use the USB cable and it may not be long enough depending where your system is connected.
One thing that I can say is that SONY has created that buzz they were looking for.Comment

As for the HDMI, is the USB 2.0 bandwidth comparable to the HDMI bandwidth? Wouldnt that be an option to create a USB HDMI connection for those that buy the 499 version?
Right now Im still debating on which I get... hopefully I'll get my answers before launch.Comment

thats a broad statement since we have yet to see a finished game on the PS3. And no one has went into great detail (at least that I have read) about Sony's online service. As for the online service I will say this, I expect to be very much like Xbox Live and what it has to offer, since Sony basically copied it. Thankfully though, Sony came up with the name all by themself :wink:I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
