well honestly, the gaming public chose to go down that road when the ps2 came out. There had been graphical powerhouse consoles before, but they were expensive and didn't have much appeal. Even before it launched, the ps2 graphics and hype totally killed the dreamcast momentum. Most consoles since the ps2 have been about graphics and graphics only. Even now, a couple years into next gen, we still don't have next gen AI or physics engines that were promised when we upgraded.
Nintendo is the only one to really branch out and try new things.
