Horrible 3rd Party support really messed SEGA up + not having EA which is a 3rd party on their side really messed things up. I bet if EA was on board it would have helped SEGA out but I also bet that EA didn't want any of the 2K games around either.

And lack of copy protection hurt it even worse. But yeah Bernie Stolar getting into a pi$$ing match with EA did not help the machine at all. I guess EA was right when they said the Dreamcast would not survive if they were not making games for it.

Re: Dreamcast would have turned seven this year

I remember that that system started my "launch day" craze, where I had to get the new systems on day one. I've followed through until now...The PS3 is just to pricey and too similiar to the 360 to justify it.

But I digress. I remember getting Sonic and NFL 2k on day one. WOW, I was in gaming heaven. Sonic Adventures is still the best Sonic EVER and 2k changed what we thought a football game should be. With other first party sports games like NBA 2k and NHL 2k coming out shortly after, I as a hardcore sports gamer was a happy little boy indeed.

At that time, I worked at Blockbuster (17 year old punk I was lol) and remember how I was swiping shifts for about a month straight to be able to afford the Dreamcast.

I miss the innovation Sega brought to the table. I was a Nintendo guy at the time, but after the Dreamcast, it was Sega 4 Life!

I think the copy protection really hurt the DC, I remember how peopel were downloading games off of the net for it at that time. Would I like SEGA to get back in the console business, yes and no. Yes because I'm selfish about the great systems they released in the past, but No since I would rather see them backup a system like the 360 with some of their great franchises.

Bingo. For sports gaming it was brutal the first year. NFL 2K and NBA 2K rocked. But the first NHL was BRUTAL, as was the first WSB.

I always had to go back to my PS1 at the time.

A month would go by and the only game that would come out was Crazy Taxi. Meanwhile the PS1 would have like15-20 new games that month.

It had some nice titles but not enough of 'em. As novel as it was to come home and see if Seaman had sprouted legs, it was too far between quality titles.

Yes, the first WSB and NHL2K were bad.

Do you remember in WSB the ONE replay they'd show. Your guy would get a hit...ANY hit..and they show him making contact then running up the first base line....just him not the ball...they'd cut away before he even touched the base. And that was it. EVERY time. They made a great game a few years later, but I remember waiting, counting the days for our ONE baseball game...and it was a complete abortion. Same for hockey.

It was like living with the exclusive licesne of the NFL and MLB but hockey too. ONly the games were worse. That's why I kept my PS1. I wanted the Dreamcast to be my everything, but it just wasn't.

Oh yeah, I'll never forget how crappy the original WSB was. I remember being so upset that I had spent the $50 at that time on the game, but since I had friends at EB they took the game back.

WSB2K1 was developed buy SEGA, then enter Blue Shift to develop WSB2K2 to bring on a better game the following year.

NHL 2K was developed by EA Black Box, then almost 2 years later enter Treyarch / Visual Concepts to develop NHL 2K2 which was a much better game.

With both games, their first year they had crappy developers working on the games.

I never owned a Dreamcast but my friend did. We'd be playing it at his house all the time. One memory that stands out would be playing the Sonic game. The one where you first got to play as Shadow. Chao world was so freaking addicting.

I wish I could "fire it up" and "reminence" (sp) right now, that game was hella fun.

Question: Was Rival Schools on Dreamcast? I can't remember, but we played it to death. It may not have been the greatest fighting game, but when you're young, you're not picky at all.

True, but EA was the only missing third party that killed the Dreamcast because EA is the colossus. Many gamers think EA is synonymous with quality, deep games, which most of us know isn't the case in many instances.

But image is everything, especially in gaming. Sickening, because the DC still had a better lineup than the competition despite the lack of EA support.

                              What a killer system.

                              Take care,
