You're going up the wrong path with that comment. Some of us do know a little about technology, like to read/learn about technology on various technical sites(ars, beyond3d, etc...), and also enjoy take part in various discussions, including the split memory architecture on the PS3. Console-specific sites usually only give you half the story. You won't be seeing me base an opinion on what Major Nelson said. You also won't be seeing me base an opinion on what any Sony exec said.
Regardless of what you believe to be true, the fact remains that some devs(Epic, Ubisoft) have already come out and complained about the split-memory architecture. The RSX has access to 256mb of GDDR3 memory, and it can also texture from the other available XDR DRAM, but it has to get there thru a second bus(Flex IO), which of course causes a latency problem(how much is something we don't know yet).
If you think that a single pool of GDDR3 memory is the same as having a split pool of GDDR3 and XDR/Rambus memory, then i don't know what to tell you. There's a reason why devs prefer a single pool of memory. I'd say that the developers from Epic and Ubisoft are smart enough to tap into the split, so then why do they speak of it as being a disadvantage?
