Re: Official Gears of War Impressions Thread

    - Story - I'm not THAT far into the story to know if it's real deep or anything like that, but I do like the fact that they throw you in right into the action and don't tell you much about the past or why markus was thrown into prison. I believe through dialogue, the story will open up (already learned a few things about markus so far)

    - Graphics - I can't stress enough how much I think this is the best looking game to ever grace a console. In HD this game is flatout AWESOME. Nothing today touches it. TODAY though...

    - Controls - I think the learning curve is MUCH less than an hour.. within 15 minutes I learned the cover system rather well. I thought it'd be kinda dumb to have EVERYTHING done with the A button, but as I got further into the first mission, i realized how great it was (is). Some might find it hard to roadie run when close to a wall if they don't want to automatically be pulled into the wall for cover.. but that's about the only gripe i can find with it (i've barely covered in places I didn't want to cover in). I read the manual and I didn't know u were able to give commands to your teammates. Active reload is also a great feature. I've almost gotten it mastered

    - AI - I'm playing on hardcore so i dunno... lol their stupidity can rival that of your teammates in GRAW at times. Maybe on Insane, your teammates get smarter but right now, they've "died" and waited for me to revive them PLENTY of times... the good thing however is.. ur not the only person who can "revive" dying teammates and you don't have to issue a command to someone to go heal a fallen soldier. Also, the Locusts don't seem to take advantage of fallen teammates and killin them... for example, Dom was on the floor bleeding to death, and instead of finishing him off, the locusts continued to go from cover to cover trying to FIND ME instead... that might change on the Insane difficulty.

    - Sound - I use my father's stereo headphones and... when turned up real loud it's NIIIIIIIIIIIIICE. I find myself jumpin when I hear something collapse or see something get shot in the distance. I can only imagine how the game sounds in 5.1 surroundsound.

Overall, i think this game far exceeded it's hype, and I haven't even taken it online yet

I didn't know if you had a premium or core system, that's why I threw the component cables out there.

Played a little more of the single player this morning, and it's growing on me. There's not much to say that hasn't already been said. The controls are clunky at first, but start to feel better with the more playing time you put in. Graphics are unmatched on the 360. Nothing comes close. The voice acting is terrible, and the story is moving along slowly.

Berserkers?!?! That thing had me ready to piss myself.

I know I was skeptical at first, but I can see where all of the rave reviews are coming from. However, one of my concerns was repetitious gameplay...enter a room, take cover, clear it, move on to the next. From what I've seen thus far, there's cause for worry. We'll see...

          Swore I read this before...

Sounds interesting, but while I haven't played it yet, I can see where the stop/pop gameplay could get old.

Does anyone know if it's possible to have two seperate 360s logged into two seperate XBL accounts on one network? I'm asking this because I'd like to see if I could have 4 people playing in my house at one time online (since it's only 2 person split screen per 360).

            Any insight would be appreciated

yes...and A-Dub will also need good component cables for his TVs non 360 stuff. It's a small thing, but they make a difference.

Someone may need to confirm this but I believe I read that you can have two people logged into seperate accounts on ONE box playing split screen.

This is a concern of mine as well. I'm still flip-flopping between RB6:Vegas and GoW. And from the demo RB6V looks to be very dynamic in that you can clear each level with a variety of ways.
I suppose GoW is no differen than most FPS where you simply frag each room and then move on to the next task. This is why most of them include online play to keep the game interesting. But I will be playing a great deal offline. If the games boring after a week that's a big chunk of change thrown away for what would essentially be a rental.

Yes, I struggled with alomst impulsively getting this, but with R6 on the horizon, I don't see the point in buying it. From the impressions, it seems to be shallow in the storyline mode.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

seriously, have you gotten to the part where you are in charge ??

I know much has been made about this game being great and all that, but from the videos I've seen over the past few months it looks great visually but the gameplay seems very generic. Is there anything really "new" that GoW offers in terms of gameplay? Or is it just like the Halo series where you come upon a battle and clear the area and move on?
