Re: PS3 HD Problem looks unfixable.
My Sony CRT (KDXBR960) accepts 480p, 720p and 1080i. Upconverts the 720p signal to 1080i automatically.
So, in theory, if I had a PS3, I would set it to display everything in 720p and just let my set handle the upconversion.Comment

Re: PS3 HD Problem looks unfixable.
So what about the 360? What sort of resolution does that run in? Like me, for example, I have a couple year old HDTV that does 1080i and 480p, but no 720p. Does the 360 run in 1080i, or how is it different from the PS3? I don't have a 360 or PS3, just a PS2, but have it running on a different standard TV in my room. But I've been looking to pick up a 360 and hook it up to the HDTV if it would look good.Comment

My 3 year old 2000$ 42" rear projection only does 480i/p and 1080i...

"Not wonderment," he said when asked if he was surprising even himself with his hot hand in Virginia's 108-87 victory against Gonzaga on Wednesday night, when he scored a career-best 37 points. "I was just wondering why they didn't play more `D."Comment

Re: PS3 HD Problem looks unfixable.
old firmware:
xmb: 720p
games like resistance, that can't render in 1080: 720p
games like ridge, that can render in 1080: 720p
blu ray: 1080i
new firmware:
xmb: 1080i
games like resistance, that can't render in 1080: 720p
games like ridge, that can render in 1080: 1080i
blu ray: 1080i
720p owners still cant watch blu-ray movies in 720p
720p owners have to keep manually switching to 1080i to watch blu-ray movies or else it will downconvert to 480p.http://www.myspace.com/phillthegenesis

Re: PS3 HD Problem looks unfixable.
The bad part is movies can't be played in 720p. 720p users have to manually switch to 1080i when watching Blu-Ray movies. Because now in order to play games in 720p, you have to uncheck 1080i.
The good part is that the initial issue is fixed. 480p is out of the picture now.Xbox 360 GamertagRAW 910

Re: PS3 HD Problem looks unfixable.
The update DID NOT fix the scaling issue of you have a 480-1080i only tv.
Not only that, but they actually made things worse.
Check these feedback threads:
Sorry for this seperate topic, but I wanted to stress that people saw this before just randomly updating their system. In the old firmware, 720p had higher priority over 1080i. The new firmware update reverses this so 1080i has higher priority over 720p. The problem here is, if you play the...

Re: PS3 HD Problem looks unfixable.
evidently the issue will never get "fixed" properly to display as the 360 does because there is no scaler in the PS3. it will have to be developed for specific resolutions in much the same way Xbox 1 was.
the custom output chip/scaler in 360 is extremely flexible (note the firmware upgrade recently to activate 1080p output) and was designed using technology and the team from the WebTV group that Microsoft bought out. The image on the screen in the PS3 is technically sent directly from RSX (Nvidia video chip) to your tv. In the 360 it is sent from Xenos (ATI video chip) to the specialized output/scaler chip and then sent to your tv. this allows the image to be scaled and manipulated.
here is the 360 chip
Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, shows off the chip that handles upscaling video content to the highest quality.
