Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Update

One of the coolest elements of the game's design is the ability to combine Force powers, either together or with a lightsaber, or even both. A simple case of this would be to use Force Grip to hold someone in the air, and then either Force Push him away or use Force Lightning to fry him in midair. A more interesting use would be to instill your lightsaber with Force Lightning, thereby delivering a wave of electricity with every swipe of the saber. Or if you're of the violent type, you could use Force Grip to hold an enemy steady in mid-air, and then toss your lighsaber his way and impale his body.
Though the Force will likely get you out of any situation you find yourself in, you'll only be able to employ your abilities as long as you have Force Power left, so making use of your lightsaber when possible is probably a good idea. The melee combat system takes into account the speed of your button presses. Tapping the attack button quickly will perform a series of fast slices, while slowing down your presses will result in longer and more powerful swipes.
The Force Unleashed promises to constantly reward you over the course of its progression. Force Points can be spent to upgrade your existing Force powers, making them stronger, giving them wider affect arcs or something similar. You can also spend these to upgrade your health or energy meters, or pick up new combo attacks. Each level in the game will reward you with a new Force power of some sort, as well as a new costume to pick from. If you don't like the given costume for a level, you can switch back to an older one. Possibly coolest of all, you can pick up new crystals for your lightsaber that not only change the color but imbue it with new enhancements, like bonuses for performing certain combos.

Re: Star Wars: Force Unleashed (360/PS3)

Is it just me or is IGN not so hyped about the game as they used to be?

Maybe seeing the game being played isn't the same as what people thought it could be. I was really excited for this game, but this preview seems to be preparing people for a pontential let down; I mean, let's face it most people that have been following this game have very high expectations (maybe like 9+ at metacritic).

What i want to know is what level design is like. Imagine having all these powers but playing each level like it's a narrow path; that wouldn't be very good.

But I hope it's amazing, we'll just have to wait and see - there's heaps of games comming out before summer anyway.

                Wii Preview

Though we couldn't actually play the Wii version, we did have the ability to watch it being played by the producer. The Force Unleashed is controlled via the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination; the Wii Remote motion sensing is attached to the lead character's lightsaber, with the Nunchuk motion handling all of his Force powers. According to the producer, the game recognizes five different motion directions from each of the controls, each applied to different moves in the game. In certain instances, especially in one-on-one battles, players will find themselves locked with their opponent. In these cases, the player will have to follow an on-screen controller or nunchuk and twist it in the same position as quickly as possible in order to win these combat draws.
Lucasarts is putting a lot of focus on the current generation Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles of this game, pouring a ton of resources into technologies that affect object physics and character behavior. These technologies are clearly processor hungry, and the Wii hardware doesn't quite have the right stuff to utilize the same elements. But Krome Studios, the Wii version's developer, has programmed its own physics engine to handle all of the game's Force powers. Objects bounce around the environment realistically, and downed enemies flail around with natural ragdoll motions…and though these elements aren't quite as elaborate as the higher end consoles, they're still pretty impressive to see on the Wii system.

At the very least, the Wii version – at least in this still early stage of development – runs at a far smoother framerate than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions. Even though the game still has several more months in development, in many places the action was running smoothly between 30 and 60 frames per second.

I want Mass Effect on the PS3. It's the only X360 exclusive I'm interested in. Can't be as good as KOTOR, considering it's not Star Wars, but based on those games I'd really to like to play it.
