Re: Harmonix's Rock Band now with Impressions

Rock Band is so much easier than Guitar Hero it's not even funny.. I was able to complete a solo tour on HARD and also 100% the bass up strum EXPERT song and 100% EXPERT a song on Guitar where as on GHIII I'm having problems beating slash on "Hard" (pause)

Playing on Expert, GHIII was hard to the point of being not fun, particularly on the upper tiers of songs. Rock Band is a challenge on Expert, but (unless you're playing "Green Grass and High Tides") is still very doable and not as frustratingly impossible as some songs on GH3.

        That's my feeling, as well.

Rock Band, while easier, gets its fun from the fact that I'm not failing 24/7 like I do in Guitar Hero. Yeah, I'm not that good, but at least in Rock Band I can complete songs, where on Guitar Hero I just get frustrated to the point of giving up.

So far the hardest is the drums, for me. I can't sing, and I don't count singing as an instrument, but it's pretty hard too.

My favorite is also the drums. I can play a handful of songs on expert, and it's new and fresh and way more fun than playing the guitar to me.
I'd concur. I think it's a little skewed because people have been playing guitar sims longer than the drums(which isn't really sim..it's just electric drums, which is great). If you take the hardest songs on Expert(mostly DLC) I think it's about equal on guitar and drums. There is no double bass pedal, and no blast beats, so the real challenge is just leg fatigue and getting your rolls tight. It's difficult to say that the drums are harder, because most people I know flew through the drums on hard and a whole lot o fit on expert and this is the first time they've touched it, while by comparison, if you add up all of the experience (GHI-III, Rock Band) on guitar, people have been practicing guitar much, much more, and should be better at it.

I still go back to guitar hero II from time to time, because I think it's harder than GH III, which seems really, really easy by comparison. As far as favorite, it's no comparison, because the guitar is just a video game, and the drums are a training tool that teaches you to play real drums.

I agree that overall, Rock Band is more fun, because even easy songs are fun to play in multiplayer modes.

My problem with GHIII is atmosphere. GHIII is so boring. The guitar feels like fisher price toy. The sound in the game other than the music leaves much to be desired. I like some the guitar battle aspect of the game but Rock Band i think does a better job of bringing you into the role of playing an instrument. Of course it is not the real thing. But i think it does a much better job in this regard.

Well the drums are the real thing, lol.

The online multiplayer, both versus and coop in Rock Band is much more successful too.

For you Expert (or Hard) drummers out there: What's the best way to play the bass pedal? I was actually doing decent on Gimme Shelter (on Expert) but I just couldn't deal with the pain in my leg, and had to stop halfway through the song. Should the movement be in your ankle, or should you lift your whole leg and sort of stomp? I keep the pedal pushed down some so I don't have to press it as far, but I still end up cramping some.

Maybe my leg will just have to get used to it.

Those tracks were on a previous OXM disc for download. Pretty weak that they are using them for a week.

Part of it is getting used to it, and another tip is to try to set the kit so your leg is at a 90 degree angle, that helps a lot. I wouldn't recommend stomping on the Rock Band pedal, it'll break pretty easily.

The idea is not to LIFT your leg, but to push off of the ground and let your leg drop ON the beat. The best thing you can do(and I know this sounds like a little much, but the drums are not video game drums, they are the same as real drums) go on to Youtube and look up some drum lesson vids. It'll help you keep from fatiguing, and give you some short cuts to getting good quickly, even just seeing proper technique.

During faster bass pedal runs, you're bouncing your leg in a very similar way to the bounce of the sticks off of the skins of the drums. It's all about rhythm, bounce, momentum, and coordination. It's never about stomping or banging. That's the fast track to fatigue and cramping. Wrists, calves, angles and fingers as opposed to arms and legs.

If anyone ever wants to jam just add me on XBL. My gamertag is Ironhead34. I have about half of the downloadable content.

I play drums on expert but can bust out and sing a few songs on Medium if need be.
