Your post made me laugh coming from MrScary. I do the same thing also. But, for some reason the setting in fallout make me feel like everyone is out for themselves so "I have to do what I gotta do".

      Xbox 360 World Review - 9.3

To arms then. For starters, Fallout 3's Capital Wasteland is a considerably smaller, albeit denser, environment than Cyrodiil. As for the main quest itself, we're talking proper short - in head-down slogging mode we caned it within a paltry nine hours. It gets worse - unlike Oblivion, once finished the game ENDS FOR GOOD - a real step backwards in our humble opinion. Worse still, it's not until the closing stages that you're really gripped by the seismic events overtaking DC. We know perfectly well that that's not the way you're meant to play the game, but we'd be lying if we said we weren't ever so slightly disappointed. Worse still, we're totally mystified as to the complete lack of any guild-style quests in the game - especially when the various factions (Brotherhood of Steel, Enclave, Raiders, Slavers) surely offered every bit as much questing potential as Cyrodiil's Thieves, Mages and Fighters' guilds.
Given that combat was possibly Oblivion's weakest suite, we're pleased to report that the shooty shooty mechanics are - while obviously not up to the standards of 360's top notch FPS' - pretty sterling in the main. However, it's V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) where killing is transformed from a spiffing lark into a bona fide art form - especially when you get your hands on the Bloody Mess perk. The sense of satisfaction gleaned when popping the head clean off a molerat from fully 100 yards, watching a sole eyeball ping out of a ne'er-do-well raider's skull in slow motion or frazzling a Super Mutant into a pile of steaming ash is not to be under-estimated. It also adds some neat strategy to battles; for instance, zapping the control inhibitor on a Robobrain will cause it to go berserk, attacking foes and friends alike.
Despite the obvious highlights, Fallout 3 also seems strangely lacking in those manifold 'whoa' moments than Oblivion threw at you with such abandon. It's in part due to the relentless bleakness of the post-apocalyptic setting itself. Although technically head and shoulders above Oblivion (Draw distance issues? Not any more), it's obviously not as naturally aesthetically pleasing, and the irradiated landscape offers little scope for variation. There's also little in the way of environmental effects; surprising and disappointing considering how well radioactive storms were handled on the PC's S.T.A.L.K.E.R. That said, the combat frequently looks irresistibly beautiful; especially those blurrily slow-mo VATS takedowns.
But maybe the relentless hype machine meant we simply expected too much from the Capital Wastelands. In almost all respects, Fallout 3 is a staggering, genre-defining achievement - marrying an utterly immersive world, memorable characters, incredible production values, some of the most inspired RPG mechanics ever devised and so much heart. It might not steamroll the epic Oblivion in the manner we all hoped, but maybe that was simply asking too much. Instead, Fallout 3 stands as the perfect companion piece - a near unparalleled RPG that stands so far ahead of the majority of the games on 360 that it would be a crime against gaming not to laud this title as anything other than a masterpiece. But perhaps the biggest single complement we can pay Fallout 3 is that it sits proudly alongside its cult PC brethren as an (almost) equal. For that reason alone, it joins the pantheon of 360 Must Buys.

Haha I know how you feel, after reading all the impressions it's taking all my self control not to buy this. Gamefly is where it's at man, I just signed up a couple weeks ago and I already love it. You have to time returns right or mess with your queue to try and get new games day of release but I'm starting to get the hang of it. And living in Mass. it's only a 2 day turn around since there's a warehouse in PA. somewhere.
Must not buy!!! hopefully it'll come from gamefly on Friday, left a few things in my queue and got Ninja Gaiden sent yesterday, so that's literally going right back the second I get it and hopefully I'll have Little Big Planet and this for the weekend. I'm trying not to worry about it to much since I have to work the rest of the week and won't really have time to play until Saturday, and I still need to beat Dead Space.

God bless the woman at Wal-Mart who tore the store apart for 20 minutes this morning to find me a copy. Now just have to get through work which will be easy as I am swamped.

                  Re: Fallout 3

I was out at Wal-Mart at midnight last night and picked the game up. I thought I was only going to play for an hour or so before bed. Nope, 8:30 this morning rolls around and I'm completely sucked in still. The game world itself is just so beautifully realized. Truly a masterpiece.

The Oblivion roots of the game are very apparent but it's more refined overall. Definitely a more methodical gameplay experience and less structured than conventional games (again like Oblivion). I've had a blast so far just exploring the landscape and taking in all of the creative details the developers have dotted the game world with. I really get the sense of a struggle in the wasteland constantly having to scrounge up ammo, supplies, and even a safe place to sleep.

One last thing. Small detail, but I'm pretty impressed with how dead bodies and other things that you alter in the game world stay that way. I don't remember if this was the case in Oblivion but I think corpses disappeared after a while in that game. At one point last night during my long play session I was going through an area I had previously killed some baddies hours earlier but there were their bodies still in place including some eyeballs and brains scattered a few feet away.

I decided to get this from GF. I figure, by the time it comes in, I should be done with Fable 2.

As of right now, it says Available Now so hopefully it ships for me.

                      Gamespot Review - 9

                      The Good
                      • Freedom to explore what you want, when you want
                      • Fantastic, intricate quests can be completed in a variety of satisfying ways
                      • VATS combat system results in all sorts of tense and gruesome encounters
                      • Outstanding art design makes for a desolate DC
                      • Rewarding mixture of excitement and atmospheric exploration.

                      The Bad
                      • The story and characters can feel a bit sterile
                      • Combat feels mildly clunky.
It's a shame, in light of these impressive design elements, that the PlayStation 3 version is shockingly inferior to the others from a technical perspective. Although the Xbox 360 and PC versions display the occasional visual oddity and bland texture, these nitpicks are easy to overlook. Sadly, the jagged edges, washed-out lighting, and slightly diminished draw distance of the PS3 release aren't so easy to dismiss. We also experienced a number of visual bugs on the PS3. Character faces disappeared several times, leaving only eyeballs and hair; limbs on robots went missing; some character models had an odd outline around them as if they were cel-shaded; and the day-to-night transition may cause odd streaks on the screen as you move the camera around. This version doesn't even offer trophies, whereas the Xbox 360 and PC versions offer Xbox Live/Windows Live achievements.
No matter what platform you own, you should play Fallout 3, which overcomes its issues by offering a deep and involving journey through a world that's hard to forget. It has more in common with Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series than with previous Fallout games, but that is by no means a bad thing. In fact, Fallout 3 is leaner and meaner than Bethesda's previous efforts, less expansive but more intense, while still offering immense replay value and quite a few thrills along the way. Whether you're a newcomer to the universe or a Fallout devotee, untold hours of mutated secrets are lurking in the darkest corners of Washington.

                        Re: Fallout 3

i played for about 2 hrs last night and i was blown away.....the graphics are excellent and very detailed......if you liked COD 4 graphics then this will be more impressive......as soon as u step out of the vault and see across the landscape you will be blown away......

if it was just a shooter it would be excellent on its own, but its got all the great things a shooter has combined with all the rpg aspects.....the shooter side is just amazing.....the game is so smooth and fluid just like COD4.....you player moves pretty quickly.....the controls are extremely responsive and feel very natural (meaning just as good as COD4)

the RPG aspect is felt right from the start of the game.....u start making choices to define your character right away.....all the create a player stuff is there, but you also select dialog to help define your personality........

once i stepped out of the vault i took a quick look at the amazing veiw and called it a night......

one thing i think is very cool is that in most RPG u do things to build your player.....like combat builds your combat skills....or running and jumping builds your speed and agility skills......this game has all those skills, but you do certain things in the game to earn XP.....once you earn enough XP you level up your player and then have those points in a pool to distribute as you see fit......

the VATS combat system is totally kick ***......i was reluctant about this feature, but after using it once, i found myself wanting to use it all the time......its awesome to target a head shot and then get the slow motion cinematic view of the guys head getting blown off.....lol....good time

btw....i totally disagree with the gamespot BAD portion of its review saying
                        • Combat feels mildly clunky.
not a chance.....it feels smooth and works incredibly well
