TGS 09: Splinter Cell Conviction Hands-on

The target for this mission is an electromagnetic pulse weapon that is currently threatening the safety of Washington D.C. The game begins with Fisher hunting down those responsible for his daughter's death, but I was told you can expect it to branch out to a second storyline where the aging spy has to play the hero.
To get the info on the whereabouts of the EMP bomb, Fisher grabs the Black Arrow officer and simply lays into him. You play director on these sequences. Want to simply slap the poor guy around a bit? Just hit the X Button. If you want to get more creative, you just have to drag the unwilling officer over to a bit of the environment. For this level, Fisher had a few options like kicking his head into a bumper and head butting him in the face. An even more brutal method involves stabbing a knife stabbed into the officer's hand so hard that it sticks it to a stump. Ouch.
Fisher doesn't just have night vision goggles like he did in the past. Now he has Sonar Goggles. These bad boys send out a pulse that reads back the surroundings in real-time enabling Fisher to see through walls and other obstacles. The visual effect is a bit like the end of The Dark Knight. Here's the really cool part about the Sonar Goggles: with them on, you can queue up targets by marking them, even if they're on the other side of a wall from you. These puppies make simple night vision goggles look like child's play.

The sticky camera has also received a similar redesign. It works mostly the same as it did before. You can still throw it out to stick on any surface, giving you a look at what your foes are doing while you sit comfortably in hiding. There's the option to make some distracting noise and you can detonate the camera at any time to take out anybody that gets a tad too close. The best part about this camera, though, is that it can be used for marking enemies. Throw a sticky grenade into a room and you'll be able to keep an eye on enemy patrol routes while selecting targets for Fisher to kill.
The level I played was definitely not for the weak. As you work through Conviction, the difficulty will continue to ramp up -- a fact that became readily apparent to me after I died a few times. The artificial intelligence is quite good (even if you'll laugh at the poor saps each time they fixate on your last known position while you cruise around behind them) and you won't be able to take a ton of damage like a superhero here. If you go in guns blazing, you can expect to watch Mr. Fisher to meet his maker in short order.

Even with the option to mark enemies and then kill them in rapid succession, the game can be quite tough. You can only mark so many enemies and the later stages of the game will toss large groups of guards at you simultaneously. What's more, you only get to execute on your marks after you perform a hand-to-hand take down. When the level first opens, you'll have to come up with something cleverer than marking each enemy and then watching them fall. That something will usually involve getting your hands dirty.

Conviction is in the polishing and bug fixing stage now, which means it's getting pretty darn close to being done. That's a fact that was readily apparent in the demo given to me. The visuals look fantastic, straight down to the little open wounds that appear after Fisher interrogated that officer's face into a fender. The sound is mostly complete as well and the bits I heard did a great job setting the mood.

The music and graphics aren't the only great parts about Conviction, of course. I had my doubts going in to the demo -- the Mark and Execute style of gameplay seemed to take a little too much control out of the player's hands. Now that I've gotten my hands on it, I'm a believer. It's a challenge of planning and coordination just to get to the execute phase. Once you get a few slick kills under your belt, you start to see how rewarding the system is. It forces you to play intelligently and then pays back in full the hard work you put into the stalking. Though Fisher is much rougher and brutal in Conviction than in past Splinter Cell games, he's still most comfortable out of sight and out of mind.

Splinter Cell Conviction has co-op, "new mode"

The first concrete details on Splinter Cell Conviction's multiplayer mode are in, via the back page of the latest issue of PC Zone magazine.

According to the mag, its next issue will include "hands-on, co-op reveal and a brand new mode." And that's it.

Of course it's not the first time the series has included co-op; the original Xbox's Chaos Theory featured Xbox Live spy collaboration missions, while Splinter Cell's trademark mercs vs. spies multiplayer was very much a team game.

The Splinter Cell issue of PC Zone is out on December 23.

Conviction features 6 hour co-op prologue campaign

It has been revealed today that the much anticipated Splinter Cell Conviction title is set to include a co-op campaign portion, that will not only act as a prologue to the main storyline but also be of a sizeable length at around six hours.

Placing players in the roles of Daniel Sloane-Suarez (callsign Archer) and Mikhail Loskov (codename Kestrel), the pair will initially not get along at first. “They don’t really like each other or trust each other,” says Patrick Redding, Co-op Game Designer before continuing “but you’ll hear in their dialogue, moving through the missions, that their trust is slowly building.”

Archer and Kestrel’s storyline will begin two months before that of the single player campaign, and will detail how EMP’s have been liberated by rogue factions within Russian Intelligence and then sold on to members of the Russian Mafia. Due to such a fact, the co-op campaign will immediately begin within the heart of St. Petersburg in a mob den.

Redding explains “You are going into this really seedy, gritty underbelly where we can put the whole graphical horsepower of our engine and the Xbox 360 to work giving you the lurid texture of this place.”

The emphasis on such a co-op portion is based upon communication, tactics and looking out for each other. “If Sam Fisher is our panther, then these two guys are like a couple of Velociraptors taking down the herd,” states Redding.

Conviction to include standalone challenge modes

Alongside its freshly unveiled six hour co-op campaign, Splinter Cell Conviction is also set to include a number of standalone challenge modes.

These will currently being referred to as Third Echelon Missions, and will be spread across a variety of six maps. These are based upon four levels seen within the co-operative campaign, and two that will be exclusive to the mode.

                                At the time of writing, four modes have currently been confirmed;
                                • Hunter – Clear the map of enemies,
                                • Infiltration – Clear the map of enemies, without being detected,
                                • Last Stand – Protect an EMP warhead from waves of enemies,
                                • Face Off – Two players go head-to-head, includes a number of customisable AI enemies spread throughout the map.
