Re: Rage (iD Software's new FPS using their Tech-5 Engine)

This month up to the 15th of November just has too many good games coming out.

Rage, Batman: AC, Skyrim, BF3, MW3, UC3, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Forza 4 and NBA 2K12.

    Just too much, lol.

            So let's see about 10/4/11...

            NBA 2K12 = 9.5
            Dark Souls = 9.0
            Rage = 8.5

Most critically acclaimed release day in history?

              Eurogamer - 8

For some, it will all add up to a strangely shallow experience, where the story never asserts itself enough to feel less than periphery, and where things we take for granted nowadays have been ignored or forgotten. This certainly isn't a video game like the ones we're used to playing in 2011, smothered in celebrity voice actors and shoulder-grabbingly intense expository cut-scenes, and varnished by psychologists so we never look in the wrong direction when we're sprinting away from a set-piece. Instead it's something simpler and more old-fashioned.

Judged on game design and content, then, it's slightly anachronistic, but as a toy box full of things you can only do in games, Rage is warm-hearted and refreshing. It's not going to change the world, but it does serve as a timely reminder of that other thing id Software games always did besides smashing through some new technological barrier. They made shooting things fun, and it's nice to have that.
              Gamespot - 8.0

That honor belongs to the lengthy campaign, which can last upward of 20 hours for avid racers and diligent questers. Though the story gets a bit too cliched, there is a robust amount of adventuring to be done in a world that rewards you for your attentions. Rage is a beautiful game that looks equally stunning with or without the hefty installation (which reduces the load times and is optional on the 360 but required on the PS3), so regardless of which platform you play on, you'll find a rich and rewarding adventure that sets a new visual standard for the postapocalyptic wasteland.
              CVG - 8.9

While story and structure may never have been what id games were about, expertly refined gameplay mechanics are what the fans have craved - and Rage has that, along with tonnes of variety. It might not be the perfect FPS those four years of development suggested, but get your hands on that shotgun and you'll know it was worth the wait.
              G4 - 4/5

have played and loved many games with undeserved endings, but Rage moves past letdown to a violation of the player’s trust, reframing the mystery and excitement so beautifully unfurled in the preceding hours into something lesser; the carnival barker finally lets you behind the curtain to only belie his bluster.

Rage is an exceptional gaming experience . . . unfortunately, it’s a little too memorable.
              Joystiq - 3/5

And that's the thing. The aspects of RAGE that seem interesting and different at first never grow or expand. The enemy reactions, the clutching, the begging for their lives, it's repeated identically so often over the course of the game that it loses any impact or meaning. The town that initially holds the promise of a big, wide, asteroid-murdered world is a facade for a few fetch quests down some of the most guided, narrow shooter levels this side of a Call of Duty title. RAGE is pretty at times, but it's not enough to paint over the truth - that Id's labor feels like a scaffolding for a game of bolder ideas, ideas which, for whatever reason, aren't realized. And the game that is there just isn't enough to compete with other, better shooters we've seen this year.
              1UP - B

It's understandable that people would expect a lot from Rage, being that it's made by Id, a developer whose entire history has been about dropping technology bombs that also have a fun FPS (and neat multiplayer) strapped onto them. Rage fits that mold snugly, but it's nothing revolutionary. It comes from a different kind of Id, one that would rather play with existing conventions than reinvent them. Conversely, it's the same Id that puts look and feel on the same high pillar, and it's impossible to call Rage badly-composed. I just don't think it's going to be remembered as anything but a sleeper hit of the fall of 2011.

Great point in that GT review about the MP.

I was thinking why no shooting? With everything that is coming out in the next few weeks, a gritty Mario Kart makes more sense.

if you get the console version, be sure to Manual save often. The Auto save checkpoints are far between. Also, on the ps3, the Booklet says it will take 15 mins to install. A guy on the Rage forums says it take closer to 30.

Was going to pick this up today, but now I'm debating if I want to change my preorder to something else. The reviews aren't bad, but it doesn't sound like the game was as good as I thought it would be. The story being poor/virtually non-existent is a criticism that seems uniform across the reviews. Not that I expected a great story, but I expected something at least decent given the development time. Doesn't seem like story/plot is iD's strong point. I don't know with so many big games coming out the next couple of months, this game needed to be better than just good to warrant a purchase.

If DOOM 3 was any indication, I do not understand why people expect so much from id games.

I will always have a special place in my heart for them, old school PC developer, but the last couple of games seemed more of a large tech demo of their engines when it comes to storyline, and gameplay elements.

They make good games, but nothing to get so overly hyped about IMO.

                        Rage:
What you get when you try to play Rage on your PC.

I had it pre-loaded on steam and ready to go at 11am. At 11 it started decompressing and everything went fine Loaded up the game and the video options are limited to resolution, brightness, and Anti-Aliasing.

So I start the game and see the opening sequence then I get to play. As I look around the room I can see strange things happening on the sides of my screen. The game is supposed to dynamically configure your graphics for you to get the best picture. Well something is off. I can see that texture better texture are being loaded in as I pan around the room and it's distracting. So I play a little further and then stuff starts to flicker. First it's just random, then my gun, then an enemy, and then the whole screen. I messed with settings for about 45 minutes and saw on forums that other people were having the same problem.

I'm sure it will be fixed soon but a little disappointed with id, first game in 5 years and it doesn't work on the PC.

                          EDGE Review - 7

In its later stages, Rage becomes a slog. Enemies get tougher, and the repeated pattern of rooms filling with monsters – which must be killed before, say, a door falls off its hinges – begins to drag. Objectives, meanwhile, rarely move beyond simple fetch quests. There’s a fine line between sticking to what you’re best at and being stuck in your ways, and id occasionally crosses it. Rage is a stunningly rendered FPS, but one that seems caught between a desire to innovate and the desire to be true to the template its creators defined.

I decided to pick this up after all. I'm about an hour and half in, and so far liking it quite a bit. I can already tell the story will probably be lacking as many of the reviews stated, but the rest of the game so far seems pretty top notch. The gameplay/shooter mechanics feel extremely satisfying and the enemy ai is very dynamic and smart. The enemy is some of the best I have seen so far in terms of recent FPS. Graphically the game is one of the better looking console games , even though I have noticed a decent amount of texture pop in (I have the 360 version and it is installed to the hardrive). I love the wingstick weapon(boomerang),it is a blast to use.

I can say that so far it is basically a string of fetch quests, which really hasn't bothered me so far because I am enjoying the gameplay quite a bit. That may change as the game goes on however.
