Well now I think that brings us back up to the point we were before 3DR scrapped their game engine. Twice. Cool video though.

I'll be more hyped for this when George Broussard says "it's done." (referring to the game's official release date on 3DR's webpage, that being "when it's done")

Those are the screenshots you unlock when you get all the achievements in the XBL version of Duke Nukem 3D, I assume?

It looks to me at least that the game will be up-to-snuff visually, whenever it comes out. Not that I'm a graphics stickler at all, but I'd be more than happy if that's what the final product looked like.

My understanding is that DNF is running on modified Unreal tech, so it's probably going to have a somewhat similar look to UT3 and Gears of War.

I'll again say that I'll be happy if that's what the final product looks like. I want to see gameplay footage now. (...did I really just say that about this game...?)

Duke Nukem Developer 3D Realms Shuts Down

A very reliable source close to Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms today confirmed to Shacknews that the company has been shut down.

The closure came about as a result of funding issues, our source explained, with the shut down said to affect both 3D Realms and the recently resurrected Apogee name. Employees of both entities have already been let go.

Phone calls and e-mails to various 3D Realms veterans have thus far gone unanswered, with publishing partner Take-Two likewise unavailable for comment.

3D Realms was founded in 1987 by Scott Miller and George Broussard. The studio had infamously been working on Duke Nukem Forever over the past 13 years.

A final push to release Duke Nukem Forever began in 2007, marked by a short teaser starring the in-game hero released late that year. As recent as January, company steward George Broussard wrote on his Twitter feed that he was visiting Take-Two to show off the title.

And to think I was still looking forward to this game, somehow. This is disappointing.

Looking at the updates to the article, though, it looks like the shutdown of the company was entirely unexpected by the employees at 3DR.

Not to be a skeptic or a blind fanboy, but reading through various sources, something doesn't add up here.

Producer Joe Siegler conducted an interview yesterday about a project unrelated to DNF, and didn't mention anything with regard to 3DR going under.

Producer George Broussard's Twitter page mentions nothing of imminent doom either, and in fact mentions a company barbeque and that a "milestone had been reached" in the development of DNF.

Further, 3DR has reportedly never taken out any loans or had staff layoffs; they boasted such on their website which has since been taken offline. For what it's worth, the 3DR forums still exist and the IP address of the website is still registered to 3DR. That said, if they were in such dire straits financially, why not take out a loan?

Finally, Apogee, which unless I'm mistaken is the exact same company as 3DR, is releasing Duke Nukem Trilogy in Fall 2009. The development of this is said to be "unaffected" by the closure of 3D Realms, which, if 3DR and Apogee are indeed the same company like I think they are, doesn't make sense.

I'm not saying that this news is blatantly untrue, as Siegler has posted on the 3DR message boards that this news is in fact true, but... something smells here.
