    Far Cry 2

    PC, PS3, and 360.

Gamespot Impressions - Dynamic Environments and Savannah Battles

The sequel will embrace the strengths of the first game by pushing even harder on the open-ended nature of the original game--in fact, the game will be built entirely around the concept of open exploration, offering a world that's about 50 square kilometers in virtual size.
Far Cry 2 won't take place on a beach with palm trees, but rather, in the heart of a war-torn Africa, meaning you'll fight your way through deserts, savannahs, jungles, and border towns rather than sunning yourself on the beach. In addition, the sequel won't be in as developed a setting as in the original game--your character will carry a paper map and a compass to guide him, and you'll be using mostly conventional weapons and vehicles (rather than experimental, sci-fi stuff).
One thing's for sure: Far Cry 2 is one of the most impressive games we've seen in a long time. The game is scheduled for release later this year on the PC and was recently confirmed for the Xbox 360 and PS3 as well. We're told that the console versions are being developed with the PC version and will feature all the content of the PC versions, and that they'll ship some time after the PC version hits store shelves.

    Re: Far Cry 2

The GDC is not quite short of an utter loss of time for us, with barely anything worth filming, so even a quite average video like this Far Cry 2 one is very news worthy. But it sure does look nice.

This should be a great game. Not sure how I feel about the iron sights, or maybe it's just frustrating as usual watching someone else play, when I would be playing completely different.

Could be looking at the shooter of the year here folks.

            Shacknews Hands-On

A little bit S.T.A.L.K.E.R., a little bit GTA, and a whole lot of potential.
            Joystiq Hands-On

The short demo they had on display had an impressive amount of playtime in it, depending on how you played through it. Hocking said the game could be completed in about 25 hours, a long shooter experience to be sure before downplaying even that number. "You could do it in 25 hours, for sure" but if you want to see and do everything "you're looking at a 100-hour play experience."

Far Cry 2 to have 16-player online

Far Cry 2 will have a 16-player online mode with persistent rewards and experience levels like Call of Duty 4.

Game designer Patrick Redding spilled the beans to Eurogamer at the UbiDays event in Paris, explaining you'll be able to pick a class to fit your playing style.

He wouldn't offer any further details, but did confirm there will be no online co-op despite the ability to use an NPC “buddy” to revive you and fight with you.

He also revealed the open-world shooter is ever-so-nearly feature complete, and will soon be entering its beta testing phase.

Far Cry 2 is due out this Christmas period on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

                      Map editor, yes.

As for the multiplayer component, Amancio noted that it will have plenty of modes, with a class-based component likely to play a part. He also went into detail on the game's expansive multiplayer map editor, which will also be included on the console versions along with a map rating system a la LittleBigPlanet. Users can download maps straight to their console hard drives.

"It will also ship with a level editor. And the level editor, I can tell you, it's probably going to be the most powerful level editor of this generation. One thing Instincts did really well is that it shipped a really cool level editor on console. Our level editor is in that vein, but next level. It's really powerful. We basically give you the same tools that we have to create this game. So I think the maximum map size is half a square kilometer, which is huge.

"We're also planning on doing something where maps are rated, so that way you don't have to sift through 500 maps and say, 'Is this map good?'

                          Gamespot Hands-On

With so much advanced technology at work in Far Cry 2, we were uncertain as to how the team would get everything working on consoles. Would the PS3 and the Xbox 360 be able to replicate the weather effects, the complex physics and enemy AI all while rendering the incredibly detailed African vistas? The answer is yes--and with relatively few sacrifices. Every single feature of the PC version will make it into the console versions intact, and while it won't be rendered in 1080p on either console, it will support 720p display. Seeing the game running, that resolution looks more than sufficient to render the absolutely stunning African environment.

We spoke to Dominic Guay, the technology director on the game, who told us that there's nothing on the PC version that won't make it into the console versions--even the level creation tools are currently expected to be featured.
With the map checking in at over 48 square kilometers, using a vehicle is pretty much a requirement in Far Cry 2, and you'll have a choice of jeeps, boats, and the trusty hang glider from the last game. If your vehicle breaks down in the middle of nowhere, you can hop out and use a wrench to fix it up again. The driving works in pretty much the same way as it did in the first game, except this time you can do cool things such as strap explosives to a car, drive it into an enemy ammunition dump, and detonate it from afar.
While driving around the world, we noticed all the same attention to detail that makes the PC game so visually arresting. Sunlight permeates the leaves as you stand beneath the trees, and wildlife such as zebras roam the area, oblivious to the civil war going on around them. There won't be any deadly animals in the game; the developers decided it was more annoying than fun to have lions in addition to enemy militia to worry about.
While you can save your progress anywhere you like on the PC version, you'll have to make it to safe houses on the PS3 and 360 to sleep and save the game. The PC version will also have safe houses, which allow you to go to sleep and set an alarm to wake up at certain hours of the day. This is particularly useful if you want to attempt a mission in the cover of darkness, as you can set an alarm and wake up at dusk to complete the mission. If you want to wait in real time, a full day cycle takes four hours in the game. All the wind, rain, and storm effects will be featured in the console versions, and realistic weather patterns from Africa have been incorporated to ensure they occur at the same sort of frequency as in real life.
While you can inject yourself with a healing drug if you become wounded, if you're heavily wounded you can be rescued by one of your allies as long as you've made friends in the game. Thankfully, an American ally called Warren came into the area to pull us out when we were fatally injured, pulling us to a safer area and giving us some new weapons to boot. It's an interesting gameplay mechanic to be revived by someone else in the game, but you have to be aware that your friends can be killed in the process of saving you, and they'll disappear from the gameworld completely if they're killed.
In the meantime, be assured that the console versions of Far Cry 2 look just as promising as the PC game, and we're amazed that the jump to consoles has been done without compromise. Far Cry 2 is set for release on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in Q3 2008.
