If you can I would just rent Gears of War so you can keep up with the story in Gears of War2.

Also I read (TeamXbox,IGN, can't remember), that they will have unlockables tied to achievements from Gears 1, so it would be worth your while to at least rent as mentioned above.

I played thru the Gears of War single player campaign 4 times. Now, maybe that isn't a big deal for some, but seeing as though i hardly ever finish games it is saying someting abut Gears. Great game

Gears of War 2 "Touch of Sound" Video Documentary

Maxim has received a video documentary from Epic Games that takes a behind-the-scenes look at the development of Gears of War 2, focusing on one of the more underrated aspects of video games: sound.

Design Director Cliff Bleszinski and Producer Rod Fergusson explain the role sound plays Gears of war 2. Plus, watch John Di Maggio voicing Marcus Fenix and learn more about the music score Steve Jablonsky (Transformers, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) is creating for the game.

                            First Gears of War novel

For Gears of War 2, the team has gone to great lengths to expand the story of the Gears of War universe, and Epic has partnered with Karen Traviss to further expand that story into a series of novels. In the first novel, Gears of War: Aspho Fields, Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago prepare for humanity's last stand, but find themselves forced to relive the battle that changed the course of the Pendulum Wars many years earlier. Aspho Fields exposes the past, chronicling Marcus' induction into the COG army, the story of Dom's brother Carlos, and the first meeting between Marcus, Dom, and Anya Stroud.

As a special treat for all of the eager fans out there, gearsofwar.com is excited to bring you an exclusive sneak peek at the novel! Check out this excerpt from the prologue of Aspho Fields

                                videogaming247: Hands-On

Is Gears of War 2 any good? Do you see Dom have a little cry? Is it good? Are the derrick bits fun? Is it good? Is it good?

We’ve played it. It blew us away. It’ll blow you away too.

First things first: Gears 2 could very well be the game you’ve been dreaming of for the past two years. It’s Gears of War to the power of ten. The hour we spent playing co-op at a recent press event was practically transcendental: it takes puerile fun so effortlessly to the next level the action games of the past 12 months evaporated in seconds. Sorry for the gush, but we really were knocked out.
Bleszinski: Gears of War “is no longer a game: it’s a platform”

Gears 2: Campaign and story were primary focus for improvement, says Bleszinski

Gears 2: “Risks” in narrative are first for videogames, says Bleszinski

Gears 2: Josh Ortega is a “force of nature,” says Bleszinski

Gears 2: “There’s plenty more to be seen,” says Bleszinski

Gears 2: Extra colour doesn’t mean game looks like “Care Bears and rainbows and unicorns,” says Bleszinski

                                ...

                                Videogamer: Hands-On

As our time with Gears of War 2's campaign came to an end, we were left gagging for more. And that's one hell of a reassuring feeling to have. It's a very familiar experience, but undeniably it's a better one. And we've only played through the first act. We'd tell you to get very, very excited for this game, but we've got a funny feeling you already are.
