well that's how a lot of these niche japanese games are done this gen. The 360 was already the lead platform for Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry, and they sold considerably more in the west on the 360. So they put their effort where the money was.

The sucky thing for ps3 only owners is how this game selling poorly will actually cause more of these kinds of games to be 360 exclusive.

          Telegraph UK - 10

Bayonetta’s exceptional quality as a video game is beyond question, raising the bar of its respective genre to hitherto unseen heights. But it’s also a shining beacon for Japanese games development. The untouchable Nintendo aside, the games industry in the Far East is perceived to be on a downward spiral, with even Capcom’s Keiji Inafune declaring the Japanese games industry ‘finished’ at last year’s Tokyo Games Show. With a sweep of her gun-toting stilettos, Bayonetta kicks that theory into touch. Bayonetta’s unashamedly a video game, but it’s also unashamedly Japanese, a celebration of the unique exuberance that characterises the country’s long-standing approach to video game craft. What’s the phrase? “Only in Japan?” Sometimes that’s true, and the rest of the world can only look on in envy. Somehow, you can’t see the west producing an action game starring a schoolmistress-cum-dominatrix with guns on her heels, whose primary form of defence is punching angels heads off with her magical hair extensions. Considering just how good Bayonetta is, the gaming world would be a much duller place without it.
          Game Informer Review - 9

When you’re chaining combos together, switching between weapons, and punishing otherworldly opponents, Bayonetta is the epitome of its breed. It isn’t so much an evolution of the genre as a well-tuned and highly polished culmination of its history. From this point forward, something about stylish action games will need to change, because I have trouble imagining how a developer could use the tried-and-true formula to create anything more delightfully excessive than Bayonetta.

          Second Opinion - 9

As the game’s intriguing story about the Umbra Witches and Lumen Sages unfolds, Bayonetta reveals more than just the skin underneath her hair and heels. Our limber heroine is a magic powerhouse with a mind-boggling amount of extravagant combo moves and seamless animal transformations that give Kratos a run for his money. From Breakdance to Wicked Weave attacks, these moves are as fun to execute as they are to watch. The large-scale battles make excellent use of the game’s unique stages as Bayonetta uses her lethal locks to hurl environmental objects at her adversaries and deliver powerful finishing blows. While lengthy vehicle and on-rails shooter sequences don’t exhibit the same amount of polish, the rest of the game is so good that it’s easy to overlook. From the game’s flashy opening to the gotcha ending, Bayonetta puts on one hell of a show.
          Videogamer Review - 9

"Seven years ago I created Devil May Cry. Many of you have said that it kick-started the action genre into 3D, but did it really? Have action games really progressed past what we accomplished seven years ago? I don't believe they have. We as creators have squandered the opportunity to make things better, smoother, more intense, more engaging; that is why I have come back to 3D action. It is time to make good on the promise of seven years ago and I feel that we are the only team who can do it. The era of style and action is over. Today we take action to its climax."

Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya, May 2008

It was certainly a bold statement to make, but no one ever questioned him. This is a man responsible for creating one of gaming's biggest franchises and he speaks with an authority that few developers possess. A year and a half later, Kamiya's latest baby, Bayonetta, has finally made it into my hands, and it really does take action to its climax. Kamiya can talk the talk, and he's delivered the goods to back it up.

            Re: Bayonetta (360/PS3)

I'm not sure on what to think of Bayonetta, but I want to say that I do love Hideki Kamiya's comments regarding the status of action videogames over the last few years. Aside from maybe the Ninja Gaiden games on the Xbox and Xbox 360, there's really nothing in this generation that has pushed the boundaries of 3D action gaming. Hell, I would go even further to say that there isn't really much out there that gets the adrenaline going as far as action games in general are concerned. There sure isn't anything comparable to the feeling one gets from playing a game like AfterBurner Climax in the arcades. It's sad when modernized update of a 20+ year old game is providing more raw action and excitement than the current generation of action games.

I don't care if it's 3D style or old-school style shooters or platformers... bring back the challenging heart-pumping action games dammit!

I'm suprised it hasn't been punished for that awful music. Should get to making a custom playlist since I'm buying it now with nothing else to buy this month as ME2 is already paid for.

On the contrary, reviews have praised the music and I like it too. I don't care for the Japanese pop stuff, but the piano and jazz is nice.

Based on the reviews ( I was getting this either way after the demo), I'm passing on Darksiders and just going with Bayonetta now.

I'm still trying to decide whether to pick up Darksiders. I know it's a game I will enjoy, but there's so many games coming out over the next few months that I'm going to have make some tough choices. The Toys R Us rewards member deal is enticing - if you buy both Bayonetta and Darksiders, you get a $40 gift card.

                        The Good
                        • Fluid, flexible, and fun combat system
                        • Witch time and witch walk add new dimensions to battle
                        • Fantastic, memorable boss fights
                        • Intuitive scoring system with online leaderboards
                        • Superbly animated.

                        The Bad
                        • Some minor camera issues.
Chock-full of often silly but always memorable moments, Bayonetta is hard to get out of your mind even after you've stopped playing it. More than anything else, almost everything about Bayonetta feels just right. Its host of hidden items and secrets, multiple difficulties, competitively balanced scoring system, and charismatic heroine make it a game that will be revisited time and time again. This is one action game that you absolutely must not miss.

Yeah I was leaning towards picking up Darksiders now and Bayonetta in a few weeks but think I'm going to jump on this deal. Bayonetta seems pretty special

                            8.0 on PS3 from Gamespot

It's a wrap. Unless a miracle happens and there's a patch, the PS3 version sucks.

                                Re: Bayonetta (360/PS3)

It's still a good score but the principle of the whole thing is what makes my mind up.

The PS3's power is on par with the 360 so why should we fork out money for a 2nd rate port of a game that should have been so much better?

This is not MW2 or Batman where the differences between the consoles are minor things like darker or sharper textures.

The two versions of Bayonetta are apparently like night and day.

                                From the Gamespot review:
Bayonetta's PlayStation 3 port is hampered by a number of technical issues that disappointingly prevent it from reaching its potential...

                                The Bad
                                • Frequent, lengthy load times
                                • Frame rate hiccups during high-action sequences
                                • Some minor camera issues

...it's plagued by a number of technical issues on the PS3 that distract and spoil some of the fun. Not only are the visuals grainier and more washed out than in its Xbox 360 counterpart, but there are also noticeable frame rate dips that occur when the action gets too heavy. Most commonplace, however, are the frequent, excessively long load times. While the loads between levels are partially mitigated by the useful practice mode, it can only cover up so much and doesn't do anything at all to help all of the other loads. You're met with an immersion-breaking, several seconds long loading screen every single time you want to pause the action, access your inventory or switch between submenus there, save or load your game, or pick up a new item. All together, these problems notably affect your enjoyment, and in a game where high-energy combat is king, these are pretty significant...
