I really think this is a move Square-Enix had to make with the FF series.

IMO I think interest in the series has slipped and making it an exclusive on one console probably wouldn't have done them any good. Just this announcement alone has made FFXIII relevant in this current generation of consoles. (I remember all the "ho-hums" back a couple of years ago).

Good move by Square-Enix.

"When Microsoft revealed yesterday that Final Fantasy XIII was coming to Xbox 360, they were only telling half the story. At a Q&A session with Square Enix after the press conference, we learned the truth.

The Japanese developer won’t even begin working on the Xbox 360 version until the PS3 version is finished. The Square Enix representatives were frank on this point: porting the game will take a long time. And after it’s ported, it’ll still have to be localised.

Realistically, that’ll mean a gap of around a year between the two — and the PS3 version is still a long, long way off. There is little hope for FFXIII landing on the 360 this side of 2010.

This whole venture is a last-minute development; the decision to port to 360 was only made a few days ago.

Another aspect of the FFXIII development process that’s been largely overlooked is that Square Enix already has the game running on PC. They have yet to decide whether they’ll release it on that format, however. They may just be using it as a development environment at this stage.

Another factor to consider: FFXIII is being created for PS3 with Crystal Tools (formerly known as The White Engine), Square Enix’s proprietary technology for PS3 development. A whole new engine may be needed to get the game working on the 360."

Yes I heard they might be using the Unreal Engine for the 360 version. If this all ends up being true, it might be a completely different game and the delay doesn't help.

The PS3 and the 360 versions will be released simultaneously in the US and Europe, but not Japan. The 360 version won't be released in Japan.

We also heard Square Enix say FF13 was exclusive to the PS3 a couple months ago.

MS must have paid tons of money to have a completed PS3 version just sit there until the 360 version comes out.

Either way this game is so far away that at this point it doesn't matter.

i wonder which final fantasy game will come out first.

They've been putting more resources in FFXIII but with the 360 version too, versus could probably be released first

Either way this game is so far away that at this point it doesn't matter.

The US version of FF has always come out 7 months or so after the Japanese version. They plan to do both the US localization, and the 360 version simultaneously, but by separate teams...and theyve said both should be ready at the same time, within 6 months after the Japanese version. I'm sure that if SE hits any major snags with the 360 port the localised US version will still drop when it's ready.

Also, that PSU rumor is crap. From what I've read, SE added 360 tools into their engine months ago.

We're hearing that the release date for Final Fantasy XIII is starting to come into view. Square Enix plans to bring the game out in Japan during the 2009 holiday season, with a U.S. release sometime in 2010. This could be as early as summer 2010 or as late as holiday 2010.
