• Like XII, you view the enemies on the field of battle and have the ability to get out of the way.
• The transition from exploring to transitioning is a simple camera and character lock and the menu pops up. Essentially the same thing as Chrono Trigger.
• Also like the SNES game, you fight whatever enemies that are in the vicinity of your screen.
• Before you enter into battle, you can take out your sword to ensure you get first attack, but at a cost (not mentioned what though).
• During battles you can freely execute your attacks with whatever choice of combos and abilities you choose.

FFXIII coming out next year in US and Europe

If you've been looking forward to Final Fantasy XIII's release in 2009, it appears that you'll have to wait a bit longer -- say, until 2010. In an interview with Reuters, Square Enix President Yoichi Wada discussed his company's solid holiday sales despite the global economic downturn. "Demand has been generally brisk," Wada said. "The sluggish economy has not hurt us that much yet." That being said, Wada also announced that Final Fantasy XIII would be released later in 2009 in Japan, while North American and European launches of the game would come in April 2010 or later.

Writing was on the wall when it went multi-platform...I know they said developing it for the 360 (after work on the PS3 was long since underway) wasn't going to affect the release date, but let's be realistic here....

It could be the only numbered FF released on this generation of consoles now (a stretch maybe, but it might be close).
