        Re: Final Fantasy 13 (PS3/XBOX 360)

Kitase “aiming” for FFXIII 360 to ship on 3 DVDs

The 360 version of FFXIII will ship on multiple DVDs, producer Yoshinori Kitase confirmed to VG247 at GamesCom today.

“This is not the final count as we’re still working on it, but we’re aiming for about three discs for the Xbox 360 version,” said the developer.

Kitase went on to assure that the two versions will be practically identical, although he did concede that there are likely to be “subtle differences” between the two.

“The 360 version and the PS3 version should be pretty much equal, both in terms of content and the visuals as well,” he added.

“Since the hardware is different, there might be some subtle differences if you compare screenshots side by side, but the team’s being very careful about the compression of the data and the visuals, so that it’s exactly the same on both.”

FFXIII releases this winter in Japan and next year in the US and Europe.
FFXIII story to last around 50 hours, new characters announced

Final Fantasy XIII’s story will last over 50 hours, not including side-quests, producer Yoshinori Kitase said at GamesCom today.

There was also two new characters announced during a presentation of the game earlier. The first one doesn’t have a name for now, just that she wears a sort of summer dress, white top, pink mini-skirt and a pink braid, but more info will be coming at Tokyo Game Show next month.

The second character announced is the son of the already announced Sazh, but there was no more info then that.

Finally, Kitase announced that the English dubbing for the game is finished and that the game will have English and Japanese sound dubs only, but will have subtitles in your native language.

          Re: Final Fantasy 13 (PS3/XBOX 360)

          Japanese magazine Dengeki interview translated:

Q: During the battles, the words "Paradigm Shift" are displayed.

Toriyama: It has to do with the combat tactics within the ATB system, it's something we haven't formerly introduced yet. It's called "Paradigm Shift" in English (and will likely be called something else in the Japanese version). It's used to change "roles" and the AI patterns of your characters on screen, for example offense/defense, or more situational setups. These can all be changed within the heat of battle.

Q: How many different types are there?

Toriyama: There are a lot of different roles on their own, couple that with the different combinations you'll end up with between the three characters in your party, and the sky is the limit. For example, you can go for a heavily defensive setup with the defense/defense/healer setup.

Q: So do you get more different types as you progress through the game?

Toriyama: That is correct. You get more roles as you progress through the game, and you can customize them in the menus. You can kind of think of it as a system similar to the Gambit system in FFXII that you can change on the fly in battle. Also changing them has no affect on the ATB, so if you want to get a higher rank in battles, you're going to have to utilize your role management efficiently.
Q: Tell us as much as you're allowed to about the summons.

Toriyama: Summons have a normal mode and a driving mode. With Shiva, you've already seen both modes from what we've shown. However, Odin has a driving mode as well. For Odin, he transforms into Sleipnir (Odin's mount), and Lightning hops onto his back. In driving mode, the game has an action-game type of feel to it.

Q: The driving mode seems powerful, so is this going to be the primary way the summons are used?

Toriyama: Driving mode is powerful, but the time that you can use it is limited. This time is affected by the chains that you get in normal mode, so if you want to fight in driving mode, you have to fight in normal mode first.
Q: Even with the Summons and the Paradigm Shift, there's still a lot of depth to FFXIII's combat that you haven't talked about?

Kitase: With regards to lasting appeal, we haven't even talked about the character growth system yet. Just keep in mind that it's kind of similar to FFX's sphere grid system and FFXII's license board system.

Toriyama: With regards to the combat system, the demo only allowed players to get their hands on the more action-related parts. Combine that with the more tactical part that comes with the Paradigm Shift system that we talked about earlier, and you'll start to get a more complete picture of what FFXIII's combat feels like.

Kitase: Also, the demo had you inputting commands one by one, but how we have it now is a lot more smooth with the players changing Paradigm Shifts. People who have played the demo will probably feel that the final version is a lot speedier.

Q: In the demo, it was important to knock enemies in the air and do follow-up attacks. Is that still the case?

Toriyama: In the build we have now, both the player controller character and the AI controlled characters have roles to them, which determines the actions they perform. If the proper roles are set, stuff like knocking enemies in the air can be done automatically within the right circumstances by the AI characters as well.
Q: Please talk about the difficulty levels.

Toriyama: Since we have a system in place where even when you die in battle, you restart to the point immediately before, we've made the battles a lot more difficult this time. Sometimes it's important to focus on defense and wait for the perfect chance to strike.

Q: So the bosses are going to be hard?

Toriyama: We expect people to die a lot in the beginning (laughs)

Kitase: Before, you would have to go back to a save point when you lost, so we would make the bosses a bit easier. Since you can just rematch the battles now, we're making them hard. Keep trying until you can find a tactic or role setup works.

That was great. I am really torn now whether to get it for the 360 or the PS3. I want achievements but I don't wanna be changing discs.

                  Get PS3 trophies instead!

But I don't think changing the discs would be so bad unless only one of them is the boot disc.

Idk but the 360 does have two features which could possibly negate the swapping of discs. They have the install feat. Hopefully something exclusive for FF13 where you can install all three discs and only keep the first one in for seemless playing. OR the purchase online feat. Ofcourse you will need the 120 gig hard drive with about 50gbs available for the full purchase and dload. This is all wishful thinking but it would def be great ideas if even possible. As for ppl who don't mind swapping they can stay neutral and do that as well. 360 is really a flexible machine.

Well, I know with Star Ocean, you have to continuously swap discs. Some planets are on different discs so of course, you have to swap when you want to go to them. It wasn't that bad when I had my 360 hooked up next to my computer, but now that it's in the family room, I won't even play it anymore.

If they make it so you can install all three discs and keep one in to play, that'd be great and I'd definitely get it for the 360. My only game for the PS3 is MGS4, I have like 1 trophy from Ragdoll Kung Fu.

This game looks great (visually). I hope with how longs it's been since 12 came out that it turns out to be a classic. I try to get into 12 but I lose interest in the story before I finish it.

Any ideas on a release date for North America?

                              Final Fantasy XIII Update

Toriyama didn't really share anything in the way of trivia, but he did give us one big hint on a future character reveal. What's the one character name you always see in a Final Fantasy game? If you answered Cid, pat yourself on the back (and somewhere else if you like). While not specifically mentioning Cid's name, Toriyama did say that a familiar Final Fantasy character will have a major role in FFXIII.

Toriyama also shared some technical details on the game. Save data will take up 500KB. Trophy data takes up 3,080KB. In case you were stocking up munitions for a big system wars battle, there won't be a hard disk installation.

Worried about load times? Don't be. The only time you'll see load times is when you transition from town to field. Once you're out on the field, the game is seamless. Toriyama explained that the game's tech staff tackled loading early on in order to keep the experience as smooth as possible.
