Well, my knowledge of Japanese isn't that great but I did find a website that has a translation guide to help with some of the stuff I'm fuzzy about and that's helped greatly for me to understand the story. As for gameplay mechanics the battle system is pretty easy to use once you figure it out and it's very fast paced.
If any of you have seen videos on youtube or justin.tv so far of people playing the game the battle have a time frame in which you should beat them ranging anywhere from :20-3:00 for normal enemies to 5-8:00 for bosses. The time in which you beat it gives you stars if it is under those times, which can lead to item drops. You get material items from there and random treasure chest from the game that allow you to customize and upgrade your weapons.
Limit breaks are handled by dealing damage to an enemy which will fill up an orange bar on the screen which will then "break" an enemy leading to double damage and more once you learn an ability that allows you to launch enemies in the air.
The game is pretty linear so far, I'm told once you reach a certain point in the game (which I'm not at yet) it opens up into a very wide world. But I've been playing now for about 25 hours and it's pretty much go from point A to point B. The only negative about this is the level-up system (similar to FFX's sphere grid) is linked you advancing the story. So until you complete certain stages leveling up your abilities is locked no matter how many license points you have.
The game is also similar to FFXII in that you only control one party member in combat, you don't control your other party members at all. So this means if you *the party leader) dies in combat its game over. You can change what presets and tactics your other members use but thats about it and whatever preset you have them using is the only one they will use. (i,e. an attacker will only attack, a blaster will only use black magic and a healer will only cast white spells.) Just like with the sphere system obtaining these extra roles depends on advancing the plot.
