Well, my knowledge of Japanese isn't that great but I did find a website that has a translation guide to help with some of the stuff I'm fuzzy about and that's helped greatly for me to understand the story. As for gameplay mechanics the battle system is pretty easy to use once you figure it out and it's very fast paced.

If any of you have seen videos on youtube or justin.tv so far of people playing the game the battle have a time frame in which you should beat them ranging anywhere from :20-3:00 for normal enemies to 5-8:00 for bosses. The time in which you beat it gives you stars if it is under those times, which can lead to item drops. You get material items from there and random treasure chest from the game that allow you to customize and upgrade your weapons.

Limit breaks are handled by dealing damage to an enemy which will fill up an orange bar on the screen which will then "break" an enemy leading to double damage and more once you learn an ability that allows you to launch enemies in the air.

The game is pretty linear so far, I'm told once you reach a certain point in the game (which I'm not at yet) it opens up into a very wide world. But I've been playing now for about 25 hours and it's pretty much go from point A to point B. The only negative about this is the level-up system (similar to FFX's sphere grid) is linked you advancing the story. So until you complete certain stages leveling up your abilities is locked no matter how many license points you have.

The game is also similar to FFXII in that you only control one party member in combat, you don't control your other party members at all. So this means if you *the party leader) dies in combat its game over. You can change what presets and tactics your other members use but thats about it and whatever preset you have them using is the only one they will use. (i,e. an attacker will only attack, a blaster will only use black magic and a healer will only cast white spells.) Just like with the sphere system obtaining these extra roles depends on advancing the plot.

Thanks. Seems like I'll be playing this one for a while. Good thing the game does open up though and is not totally linear.

Everybody's impressions I've read say the game is very linear from start to finish. Not much in the way of exploration, towns, and NPCs to talk to.

More non-spoiler impressions from people that have finished it.

Ouch, its even more linear that FF12? That makes this a wait and buy. At least with FF 12 you had all the "100%" questing to do. Now i'm reading there's not even that? Man...

I miss FF7 and FF8 where you had a world to explore at your own pace and desire and towns to visit when you didn't want to or didn't know how to progress the story.

Other than the nice graphics and the name, I'm not like what I'm reading about FF13 all that much.

I think FF XIII will surpass FF VIII(IMO) as the most polarizing FF ever. As someone who approaches JRPG's with a totally different mindset then I have for WRPG's, I have no problems with the direction they chose for this game.

I've played(40+ hours for each one) and enjoyed all of the previous FF's released here in the U.S., but have only actually finished a couple. I think the tightly controlled narrative will, for me, be a great thing, quite possibly removing the need to grind from this series. Having to level grind will almost always make me stop playing an RPG.

I think many long time fans of the series may end up hating this game, and those love it the most may be people who previously couldn't stand JRPG's

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

I finished 7, 8, 9 and 10 and thought 7 had the best gameplay and strategy with the materia slots etc with 8 close behind. I loved the triple triad card game in 8 though and to this day can't believe it hasn't been turned into it's own game, even on handheld or download only.

I'm sure i'll love FF13 but I'm just as sure i'll miss the open world, towns and non-linear style of the older games.

Well once you play the game I think you'll understand why stopping at towns won't fit in with the story.

                    Spoiler

But to say there aren't towns in the game at all isn't true.

                              Re: Final Fantasy 13 (PS3/XBOX 360)

We have barely seen the 360 version, so for those getting that version, the good news is there doesn't look like there's anything to worry about.

                              1UP

Anyway, the point is, my ten minutes of play time with the English demo were pretty satisfying. I specifically chose to play on one of the Xbox 360 demo kiosks to see if that version of the game feels like a second-rate port; as anyone who paid cash money for Bayonetta on PS3 knows, there's danger in choosing a game on its secondary platform. And I'm sorry to say this to all the 360 fans in the audience, but PS3 has always been FFXIII's primary platform. Up until E3 2008, no one even knew it was going to be a multiplatform game -- and so far as Japanese audiences are concerned, it isn't multiplatform. The Xbox 360 port was developed in parallel with the English localization, specifically for international audiences. That sort of situation almost always amounts to compromised ports and lackluster technical performance.

It was therefore a pleasant surprise when I discovered FFXIII runs just as smoothly on 360 as it does on PS3. It's a brisk, action-packed RPG with tons happening on the screen at any given time (and the series' requisite flashy visuals cranked up to full throttle), yet I didn't see a hint of slowdown or choppiness or screen tearing or any of the other visual hiccups that serve as hallmarks of a sloppy port. Admittedly, I didn't see the two versions running side-by-side -- the bus set them apart with a looping trailer dividing the kiosks -- but I honestly saw no tangible difference from my time with the PS3 version.

Of course, the 360 edition of the game comes on multiple discs thanks to the system's lack of Blu-ray support, but I survived the PlayStation era and its ghastly four-disc games and never particularly cared that I had to swap discs once every 15 hours of game time. I can't imagine it'll make a difference in 2010, either. Given all the time eaten up on modern consoles for installations and updates and patches, 30 seconds to insert a separate disc is utterly trivial, and honestly I feel sort of embarrassed for people who think it's a genuine issue.

Now, the PS3 version will still probably have some advantages over its 360 counterpart, such as uncompressed audio. Gamers with a high-end rig will probably gravitate toward the PS3 edition as a result. For my own setup -- which is decent enough, but hardly a home theatre to be envied -- the 360 version will be just fine. FFXIII plays exactly the same on both systems, all the way down to the control interface: confirm and cancel map to X / O and A / B, respectively, and the all-important Paradigm Shift command works with PS3's L1 and 360's left bumper.

I suppose we'll see if the game holds up under real-world circumstances, but my experience strikes me as a definite win for Square's Crystal Tools. The whole thing has taken years to get off the ground, but now that FFXIII is up and running on two different consoles it really does seem to make good on the promise of seamless multiplatform development. One supposes that a PC port would be a snap as well! And let's not forget that Crystal Tools also supports Wii. Yeah. I'm impressed by the 360 version, but I won't be truly amazed until they get FFXIII running on Wii.
