This is a very good game. I'm assuming it's pretty lengthy being 3 discs, but does anyone have any clue how long the campaign is?Comment

Re: Final Fantasy 13 (PS3/XBOX 360)
I'm only a couple hours in, but for me the things that make FF great as a franchise are present and accounted for. Coming after Fallout 3, Dragon Age, and ME 2, this game is different stylistically from each of those games. IMO, all are 5 star games in the genre.
It shows that RPG's are probably the genre that allows for the most variety in design/gameplay mechanics while still being clearly identifiable as belonging to that category.Jordan Mychal Lemos

Re: Final Fantasy 13 (PS3/XBOX 360)
A few early thoughts, though I'm not reading the thread until after I beat the game (spoiler concerns) Understand that I've been avoiding any and all news about this game ever since its Japanese release, so if it sounds like I've been living under a rock, that's why:
Well, that's certainly different. Kinda wish Squenix would just stick with a traditional RPG experience, but I guess they're trying to re-invent the wheel again. To be honest, the first few hours didn't seem like a FF game at all.
Let's see:
-No character levels
-Full recovery after each battle
-Control only one character
-No towns (so far at least, 2 hours in)
-Regular potions heal the entire party
That pretty much blows up several RPG conventions just in the first couple hours of the game.
At first I was kinda turned off by the whole "control one character" thing, but the more I play it I realize the fast paced nature of this game would make it extremely difficult to control more than one character manually. I still remember the pain of FF X-2's battle system, which up until this game had the most chaotic battles in the entire series.
I just hit the point where paradigms and stuff open up to customization, and I can tell I'll be spending a lot of time figuring out how the different roles work for each character, and how they use their abilities. Looks like some pretty good depth there. I really liked FFXII's gambits, so I think I'll enjoy this too after spending some time with it.
I feel like I've only scratched the surface so far, I need more time to really have a clear opinion. But it certainly is different, I'll say that much.Comment

Re: Final Fantasy 13 (PS3/XBOX 360)
^^^I rented this today and I feel somewhat the same way. I was a bit put off at first. I remember in previous FF games getting that first, early, level up and feeling like "okay...here we go!" I miss that. I'm hoping for some good towns, but it's early so I'm not too worried yet.
I also felt strange about the party leader control, but to be honest, by the time I was well along in FF12, I was pretty much strictly using Gambits anyway, so I figure it's not too big a deal.
Some FF staples are evident from the jump though: The dramatic and awesome cutscenes, the mix of characters ranging between endearing, potentially bad ***, cheesy, and annoying...lol. The corny dialogue that actually adds more charm to the game than it does to hinder itSpoiler"mothers are tough..." springs to mind here.
Anyway, I've only played to Chapter 3, but I'm starting to get into it a bit. It's a beautiful game and the story (most important to me) seems to fall right in line with what I'd expect from a FF game.Comment

Re: Final Fantasy 13 (PS3/XBOX 360)
It's been a sub-par game and decent movie so far for me. I know there's a common misconception among some of the more casual gamers that JRPGs play themselves but this is ridiculous. It feels like it's been changed for casual sake but only in a way that would be proving them right so I fail to see how that'd help anything. Hopefully things get better with the shift deal.
I did rather enjoy it when I was thinking 'someone hit this guy!' and then someone did.
Is it just me or does Hope look almost exactly like Tidus?
Speaking of such...
SpoilerI guess Vanille is Lightning's sister too? Because she looked just like Serah or is it just half-***ed character design?Comment

Re: Final Fantasy 13 (PS3/XBOX 360)
It's definitely a polarizing game.
So far I've had some success with it. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. I came in to the game thinking it's going to be a "press x to win" type, but trying that against later foes really sets you back. Some baddies you have to keep track of what you are doing.
I like the new sphere grid system (or whatever they call it in 13). Reminds me of FFX. Once it opens up you see all the choices you have to make on limited CP. Sure you're not leveling in the traditional sense, but you have many options available to you in this system. Edit: although the new system is more restrictive than the sphere grid in ffxLast edited by Kully; 03-10-2010, 12:18 PM.Comment
