    Re: E3 - Operation Flashpoint2 - hardcore fps

Sorry Skyboxer I'm not trying to argue with you, its just a pet niggle of mine. I can understand the appeal of the no save system in some way. But I guess you have far more patience than myself. Its just brutal in this game because missions take so long. I have to put aside an hour to play a mission and its quite possible to make very little progress.

I always loved the gamers manifesto from Cracked. They had this to say and its exactly how I feel.

"When we're on our deathbeds, we're going to wish we could reclaim the time we spent wandering around for save points long after we were done playing every night. Imagine if your word processing program did this, refusing to let you save your progress until you typed six more paragraphs. Or, made you retype your last paragraph six times while zombies tried to shoot your cursor...

The analogy sort of breaks down there, but the point is we shouldn't ever see a "save point" in a game again. Limited saves were invented for consoles that didn't have the memory to let you "quicksave" (where you can save at any time, any where, with one keystroke like on a PC). To keep that physical limitation and pretend it's a gameplay element is like Superman 64 claiming its programmers' inability to render any background scenery was "Kryptonite Fog."

There is not one single reason in the known universe for even one more game where the save point is ten minutes away from the boss, forcing me to fight my way down the same hallway each of the 62 attempts it takes me to beat the guy (I'm looking at you, Metroid Prime).

    Chances of that happening...

The XBox port of Doom III let you quicksave. It can be done, at least for those of us with hard drives. Surely the gaming industry will hear our concerns and act accordingly! "

Dude, I've been playing this game pretty consistently since day one, and I'm still only on the third mission. But as opposed to being frustrated by this, I'm actually quite pleased: it just means more time with the game. I've already invested upwards of 20 hours just on the first two missions, and probably a good 2-3 hours on this third one so far. Knowing I still have another 8 missions to go, not counting the bonus missions, just says to me that this game has been worth every penny in terms of how much playtime I'm going to get from it.

All the running from place to place can get a little tedious - if not boring - and, yes, it can get frustrating starting over from the beginning when you die (I've only played on Hardcore), but if you're in the right mood, there's nothing else like it. I effin love it. For me this is one of those rare games that I'm going to still be playing a year from now.

Also, word on the street is that the next patch is going to be substantial.

Yeah I get pretty irritated when I pay 60.00 for a game that lasts 5 hours. The longer the better. So I don't find it irritating but getting more for my $. That along with knowing the consequences of dying just adds to the game. FOR ME

Man you guys are hardcore. More power to you. For the record I do love this game despite its flaws. I love that a perfectly planned assault is over in seconds. And I love the tension when searching for the enemy.

I am stuck on mission 7 at the part where you are starting the assault on the fuel depot. My team is to flank right and take out a defensive position within a certain amount of time. I either get killed or run out of time.
Checked a guide and it said use a vehicle. The nearest is 1.5 miles away. I even went back to get that 2 times and drove it back, but each time the vehicle got taken out before its gun could get in range to could do any damage.
I think I am done with this game.

I think I'm only on like level 4. I really need to throw this back in at some point. Too many games... too many games.

I got too many games too. Since I wasn't playing this one I decided to trade it while its still going for $30. Then I figured I'd try to get through the campaign first.

I managed to get past where I was stuck on 7 and am now working (ie repeating over and over) a real tough battle at the end of 9.

I was stuck on the 3rd mission for days. Yesterday I finally beat it and then proceeded to march through the next 5 missions without so much as a hitch. Its really wierded me out. I'm going to throw it back in tonight and see if I can't hit another roadblock. It shouldn't take too long I feel.

Also I haven't seen any of the AI problems people are talking about yet...touch wood. It still feels like an unfinished game in parts though. Little things like healing animations would of been great. But its no game killer. Overall I'm loving it.

Yeah, that mission was especially hard for me as well... This is what I did. First you need to get that vehicle. Then you need to separate you team, 2 in the vehicle (gunner & grenadier) and then you and the medic. Have the vehicle team wait at the "top of the hill" out of site and range for their rpg guys. Order everyone to hold fire.

Now you and the medic sneak around in a right flanking maneuver towards the destroyed vehicle and some trees to the SE of your objective. (there is an ammo crate there) Now, its time to start the firefight.

First pick of the rpg team to you left. They should be in a sandbag bunker that is just South of the objective marker (your west) They are the reason your vehicle is being destroyed. Now, find good cover and take out the various tangos to the right of the depot. This may take some time, but none of them rush you and should provide to be willing stationary targets. Have the medic heal you b/c you will get hit a few times doing this. Once you've taken out the teams closest to the depot, order your vehicle team to "attack to the objective" They should be able to mop up the rest on the way in... Still using cover and bounding techniques, move you and the medic into the depot.

This may take a few tries, but it has proven to be my best chance at completing this mission.

Thanks I did make it past with the vehicle. Funny that I had to go back over a mile to pick it up.

I made it to the last mission, but so far have had 2 bad checkpoints. The first time I may have advanced too far ahead of my squad. On the load last checkpoint, there are a bunch of enemies right in front of them and they got torn up before we can regroup.

So I had to start the mission over.

Got past that and now I'm at the final assault of a naval base, which is 2 miles away. There was a helo that I am supposed to use to fly over there, but after the checkpoint its gone! Actually its hovering right nearby, so its useless. There are a few vehicles, so I try and drive to the naval base with one of those. The approach is so well covered, I haven't got there in numerous attempts. And along 2 miles to the base, no checkpoints.

Now I'm debating whether to start the whole mission over again in the hopes of getting the helo. Or trying some more with a vehicle, since I am more aware of the defenses. Or just giving up. But I'm so close.

After taking a break from the game, I went back and restarted the last mission... again. This time I moved a little faster, had time to take out the AA and got the copter for the ride to the naval base. It can be tricky finding the purple smoke (landing area for the achievement) since if you don't head in a certain direction there are no markers.
                          Spoiler

Clearing the approach to the base and the base was like a whole mission in itself. I died many times. Thank goodness for the checkpoints. The very last checkpoint though I was separated from my squad. They'd get killed then I'd have to go on alone... and was getting overrun. I thought I might have to start the whole thing over again, but then I figured a way to clear the base myself.
                          Spoiler

I can't imagine anyone finishing this on hardcore.

Well I'll tell ya what: I gave up my "hardcore only" approach. Still say that's how the game is "meant" to be played, but I just wasn't getting anywhere.

I'll make a hc run when I've actually finished all the missions, but trying to go at it that way from the beginning ... this game is hard enough on normal, as I'm quickly finding out.

Thinking about picking this game up. I am not too interested in single player campaigns, but this sounds interesting.

How is the online? Any interesting modes?

Online is dead, more or less. Don't even bother if you're not interested in SP.

Maybe after the second patch and second batch of DLC it will pick up, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Pretty much a single-player game at this point ... that or you can play the campaign co-op with up to three friends.
