But I'm completely uneducated on American history and the West. Can anybody recommend a good documentary or website or something that might explain what life was truly like in the wild west?

I wish I could help you out here.

Most of my exp have been through TV, grant it there are so many different versions of how the Ole Wild Wild West really was. My greatest teacher probably has been tv and watching old shows such as The Rifleman, Bonanza, Big Valley, Bat Masterson, Gunsmoke and countless movies.

Hundreds of great books out there to help get up to speed but I think the big screen is where it is at to get the most knowledge.

There's a documentary starring Will Smith aptly called Wild Wild West. It tells of how the west was, including the massive robot spiders.

It really depicts the Wild Wild West with a sense of accuracy never before seen.
