It's been working for me, but I might actually be doing it wrong. I missed some of the tutorial tips because my wife was talking to me when I did my first duel.
I think if you paint your shots when the target icon is white (as opposed to red), that you get more power with your shots. The more power you have, the faster the bar on the bottom right fills up and as long as your bar has more power than your enemies, you win.

I kind of missed the tutorial too because the girlfriend was talking. On that note, I find that I miss almost every tutorial popup because I just can't read the text or don't even see it sometimes. This is on a pretty good 40"LCD TV too - the tutorial text just seems really small.

      Re: Red Dead Redemption

There are two ways to duel:

One is the press the "DRAW" button (Left Trigger or Bumper on 360, LT on PS3), and then aim at your opponent. Pick your targets but only hit the shoot button to lock the target when it is white. If not, you will not fill up the "power meter" to the right enough and you will lose.

Another way is to, when you see draw, pull the right stick down and then up (pretend it's your draw hand and do the motions you would do in real life). This is how I do it because it feels more fun - like I'm actually dropping my hand and whipping out the gun.

Also as a hint - if you shoot your opponents gun out of his hand, you get more "Fame" points.

Yeah, I've been doing this all the time now, plus it's funnier to see these guys shaking their hands swearing after I shoot the gun

No, not tapping, just one. But the guys who posted after me know more about it than I do!

Picked this game up yesterday, love the fact that I feel like I am living out some great Clint Eastwood westerns or a great Louis Lamour book.

As far as stats go (I saw some people posting them on the last page):

54.9% done after 19 hours, 39 minutes and 32 seconds. 41 days have passed in game-time.

I'm actually trying to stick to the story/stranger missions at the moment, mainly because I am already planning on playing through the game again as a not-so-nice guy and spending more time roaming the country-side doing the challenges and stuff since I won't be able to stay in towns long with the bounties on my head. So I want to have the desire to "find out what happens next because the story hooked me and I want to know what happens with his Wife and Kids" already out of the way when I play through that way.

                ...oh the dreams. Hahahaha.

Can anybody on here recommend any good Western books or authors? I am borderline obsessed with the Western genre right now.

Larry McMurtry, he won a pulitzer prize for his western "Lonesome Dove" which they also made a classic tv series out of with Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall. It's the best western ive ever read and also the best ive watched

Epic comeback in Horseshoes against a little Mexicano chica. I was down 9-1 before storming back to victory with a ringer on my final throw. That girl was good though, she'll make a real name for herself on the circuit someday.

That's my plan as well. I have just been messing around in free roam and MP. So far in the story I'm at the part when you go visit the Marshal. I'm pretty much at the begining of the SP.

I can't find a raccoon for the life of me.

Last night I am trying to complete Level 7 of the hunting challenge and it needs me to get 5 raccoons and its pelts. It took me at least 45 minutes to spot my second one right off the trail leading down from the Ranch into Armadillo. In the moon light I pull out my brand new Buffalo Rifle. I aim my sights, let him get about a horse length away, activate dead eye and pull the trigger. The raccoon explodes and all that is left is a paw and a blood stain with no carcass for me to skin. I was so pissed and amused.

I think I asked before, but what aiming system are you guys using? I am using normal with auto aim off. I seem to get more kills with auto aim (is that's what it called?) off than on.

Anyone know the rough completion percentage of the game once the main quests are done? In previous GTAs it was something close to 60%.
