It started with a nibble. But my "chew first, questions later" approach has left the Mojave Wasteland riddled with the scars of my passing.

      Re: Fallout: New Vegas

So I just popped this in a few days ago, deciding to start completely over and see if I could finally beat my first ever Fallout game. And man, I'm glad I did. This game is so good.

As you can see above, the last time I tried to play it, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and stopped after about 10-15 hours.

This time, having played many more RPG's in the interim - and now understanding "how" games like this work now, I am in gaming heaven.

I wish I wasn't so late to the party as I'd love to talk with people about this game as I'm playing it! Wandering the wasteland with a few handguns and some some stimpacks, having no idea what awaits me has been such a cool feeling.

Sort of like Far Cry 3, but this so far is just a way more immersive experience. There's really nothing like it. And now knowing what I'm doing has given me some real purpose.

Right now, my goal is to explore and gain enough XP to get 100 in Lock Picking. Because man, I want the GOBI sniper rifle! I read about it online and now it needs to be mine. Little personal goals like this really have helped add even more to the experience.

Otherwise, I'm focusing on Speech, Science, Barter and Guns.

Here's hoping the game is stable enough for me to see this through. I hear the PS3 edition still has some insurmountable issues. Fingers crossed.

      Bring on Fallout 4!

        I'm playing it too.

Seeing Fallout 4 made me want to play this again and now I'm playing on PC with some mods. Mainly bug fixes, performance, stability, lighting, textures, and UI mods.

            Yeah.

That really does make my PS3 version look like ****. LOL!

I really need a gaming rig. Those screens look great.

Eurogamer just put this up. It's an excellent think piece (albeit a little too spoilery for me being a FO newcomer).

Anyway, it's definitely worth a read and is getting me amped to get home and continue exploring the wasteland.

Fact: Fallout New Vegas is the game I always wanted.

Fact: Fallout New Vegas is the buggiest game I've ever played.

I've never loved and hated something so equally before.

Every night I just absolutely can't wait to get home and fire up my PS3. And every night without fail something catastrophic will happen that will cause me to reset the entire console. Is it worth it? Yes. But how this game ever got released like this I'll never for the life of me understand.

I'm now rethinking buying FO4 on launch day.

Bugs and Bethesda go hand in hand, but the beauty of the games more than make up for the issues IMO. I had some issues with New Vegas on the 360. Faulty saves or locking up I think, but I recently played thru it again on PC and it was much better. PC version still looks good to this day. I'm ready for 4!

I really couldn't get into New Vegas for some reason. But, I love 3 got it for both the 360 and PS3. And I got a 360 with my laptop about 3-4 years ago and 3 works perfectly on that Xbox but the one I got originally it freezes towards the end. Only problem with freezing I have ever had with the Fallout series.

                        Re: Fallout: New Vegas

                        I have a problem.

I literally bought an XBOX E that I didn't even really want from some sketchy dude for $45 yesterday just so I could play FONV. I haven't owned an XBox in 6 years but I couldn't help myself because apparently this game runs a little better on that console. LOL!

Man, I should just get a PC and be done with it.

My plan is to finish up my PS3 run leaving a lot of the side quests and starting a new on the XBox and doing a more thorough and hopefully more stable run.

I guess as the file sizes get bigger (this happens as the game progresses) the game becomes a lot less reliable and word around the Internet is that the PS3 version is the worst of the platforms.

I honestly would have preferred to do one really comprehensive run but it's clear to me my PS3 cannot handle the amount of content this game has.

In a perfect world, I'd just ditch the PS3 and XBox all together and just put some money towards a computer but I know nothing about PC's and wouldn't even know where to begin researching or even how to install all the mods I'd undoubtedly want for it. Can anyone point me in a direction and give me an idea of cost?

Ideally it would run a game like this as high as possible (I obviously can't afford one that could run, say, TW3 on Ultra or anything)

Now all the obsessing over this franchise makes perfect sense to me. FONV is like nothing I've ever played and scratches all my gaming itches. I couldn't easily see sinking hundreds of hours into it. It's quite an experience.

I would check the PC thread for some good ideas. I can tell you I am using the Alienware Alpha and it does a very solid job with New Vegas at Ultra settings and most other games. It is limited in ways and will not run W3 at 60FPS, but it can do 30 FPS easily. Think of it as a step above the PS4 or Xbox One, but with the ability to play all PC titles. They make a few versions, but the price has dropped a good deal lately on them at Best Buy. They run between $350-800 depending on version. Check my blog post or there are some other threads on them and the other Steam machines for more info.

Ha! Perfect. This is exactly the post I was hoping for.

I saw in your blog you got the i5. I'm seeing them range from $550 for refurb and $650 for new and honestly, I think I may just pull the trigger!

Are you able to install any FONV mods with this thing or is it a pretty closed system? And is the GPU upgradeable? Sorry if my questions are stupid I'm just trying to grasp how it all works. I'm a moron when it comes to PC's. Reading Digital Foundry is pretty much like me trying to read Chinese!

GPU is the only downside as it is not upgradable. I would say you will still get around 2 years or so with the current Alpha hardware. My plan is to then use it as a desktop and a Steam link to another TV in the house when that time comes. Could even use it to mirror XBox One over Windows 10 with it as well, so it will still have some uses once the time to upgrade comes around. You can run full mods on it as it is a full desktop PC, so nothing closed on it. There are some new Steam Machines coming in Nov with upgradable GPUs, but most are in a higher price range. Might be worth looking into as well.

Last question on the i5 (I may order it soon if I can quickly sell my laptop)...

Have you used any mods for FONV? I'm just wondering power-wise if it can handle any of the graphics mods and still hold 30 FPS? Or if you haven't, what are you currently getting with FONV without mods on Ultra (roughly)?

If your performance isn't' great, I may just try and sell the whole kit and kaboodle and sell my PS3/XBox E/Laptop and see if I can swing some money down on the i7.
