I'll take a day or 2 off when this is released.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

What happens in 'Fallout: New Vegas'

"Unlike the previous Fallouts, where you start in a vault and you are a vault dweller, this one starts with a curveball," says Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks.
This time around, Bethesda Softworks will publish the sequel with development by Obsidian Entertainment. The staff of the Irvine, Calif., studio (Neverwinter Nights 2) includes several veterans of Fallout and Fallout 2.

"There is practically no one more qualified to make Fallout games," says Dan Stapleton of PC Gamer, which will feature the game on the cover of its April issue (in stores March 2). "Few people know the look and feel of the Fallout universe better."

The move to Las Vegas provides "a brand new, fresh experience that has a familiar feel of Fallout, but otherwise it's an entirely new game and a new look, with Joshua trees and tumbleweeds and blue skies," Hines says. "Vegas is up and running. It is not a ghost town. It still exists and thrives. There are casinos, and you can go down onto the Strip. It will have a very different feel from that standpoint."

Events in the game happen a few years after Fallout 3. No characters from that game appear, Hines says, "but you will eventually hear a little bit about the events" of that game. New Vegas is "a self-contained story. You don't have to have played the previous games to have any clue what's going on here."

At the game's outset, you get to customize your character by choosing gender, age, race, other attributes and skills. "You were a courier, and you were obviously carrying something that somebody wanted," Hines says. "Part of the story is finding out what you had and what they took."

As you explore, you must be savvy enough to play off the various factions seeking to control turf while you evade hazards such as gun-wielding super-mutants and giant bloodthirsty lizards. New Vegas' territory is similar in size to the area of the nation's capital in Fallout 3.

Says Hines, "It is a massive game world that will take you hundreds of hours to explore every nook and cranny."

        Re: Fallout: New Vegas

        * You play a courier, not a vault dweller, who is shot and left for dead in a shallow grave in the desert. As evidenced in the teaser trailer, a robot digs you out and brings you to a local caregiver who nurses you back to health.

        * Vegas is up and running. Said Hines, "It is not a ghost town. It still exists and thrives. There are casinos, and you can go down onto the Strip. It will have a very different feel from that standpoint."

        * The game takes place a few years after Fallout 3, but New Vegas is a self-contained story. No characters from Fallout 3 appear, but you will hear a bit about the events that took place in that game.

        * A big part of the story will be finding out who tried to kill you and what they took.

        * New Vegas is similar in size to the DC area in Fallout 3. Said Hines, "It is a massive game world that will take you hundreds of hours to explore every nook and cranny."

Sounds like it'll have the stuff Fallout 3 severely lacked.

          A few more details:
          • Weapons have unique/individual qualities. Some cause critical hits to head, others will damage your limbs severely for example circular saw will eat your fingers.
          • Death animations vary depending which weapon you are using.
          • Different gangs and villages might evolve during your gameplay while you are not watching. For example random Raider gang might find a hidden weapons cache and rise to power.

This game = must buy imo.

I suppose the 2nd game is so much easier / quicker to make as they already have most of the work done and they just have to tweak it, add some new places and add new plotlines and they have another hit on their hands.

Hadn't even heard of this game until minutes ago, but it sounds awesome - I loved Fallout 3 so it only sounds better.

              Can't wait!

                  New details from OXM:
                  • Character creation is virtually identical to Fallout 3, with cosmetic changes like the Gene Projector being replaced by ReflectionTM, "You're SPECIAL!" by Vit-o-Matic machine and GOAT by a psychological test.
                  • The local super mutants are pretty tough and will keep you from wandering aimlessly in the early portions of the game - they tend to be tougher even than deathclaws.
                  • Sunny Smiles' dog is named Cheyenne. She'll assist you with the Powder Gangers in the Ghost Town Firefight quest if you help her kill some geckos.
                  • The Varmint Rifle is a low-power .22 that does significant damage to limbs and has a high critical bonus.
                  • If your Barter skill is high enough, Chet the shopkeeper give you the 9-Iron golf club and some weapon mods.
                  • Every skill will have use in conversations at various points.
                  • Each firearm has a maximum of three modification slots. Once you affix a mod to a gun, it's permanent. Hunting Rifle modification examples given are scope, custom action and extended clip.
                  • Temporary followers, like the Goodsprings folks that can help you defeat the Powder Gangers, will also be controlled through the companion wheel.
                  • Concept art of Hoover Dam and screenshots of the Black Mountain radio tower and the character standing inside the mouth of Dinky the Dinosaur shown.
                  • With high local reputation at Goodsprings, you'll get a free bed to sleep in and a discount at the store.
                  • Neil, a super mutant who hates Tabitha, can help you storm the mountain.
                  • Tabitha is actually a male super mutant gone completely insane.
                  • "Skill magazines" you find in New Vegas will only temporarily boost your skills.
                  • There's a rollercoaster in Primm.
                  • Non-VATS combat being tweaked - said to feel more "first-person-shootery".

Improved non-VATS combat is a must for me. That was my complaint about Fallout 3. The combat outside of VATS was very poor.

Playing the game from a third-person perspective was almost laughably bad.
Agreed. I played the hell out of Fallout 3 ... probably over 100 hours worth ... but the graphics really left a lot to be desired, imo. The faces, in particular, were poorly done I thought, and I grew tired of the dreary landscapes after a while. I would probably pass on New Vegas if it looked about the same.

Don't misunderstand: I'm sure it'll still be a great game, it's just there's so many other RPGs out now I could be spending my time on.

IGN said it is suppose to be just as big as The Capital Wasteland so it's going to be huge.
